Addressing Cellular Network Capacity: Sectorization with Bi-Sector Array or Carrier Add?
For CDMA and W-CDMA systems, adding carriers when spectrum is available may often seem to be the most logical way of addressing capacity hot spots. However, as the carrier count increases, adding carriers becomes less and less effective as a way of adding capacity. Going from 1 to 2 carriers, for example, will double the DL capacity, whereas going from 2 to 3 carriers results in an increase of only 33%. Moreover, in CDMA and W-CDMA systems, soft handover mechanisms do not work between carriers on different frequencies and mobiles need to perform in compressed mode. This results in increased output power and interference levels in a cell and ultimately reduces capacity.
Higher sectorization of a site may require some investment in terms of the Bi-Sector Arrays and additional feeders. For those operators willing to accept the reduction of coverage from hard handover boundaries and deploy new carriers on a sector-by-sector basis, carrier addition before sectorization may be more cost effective. However, for operators who plan to deploy new carriers as layers, and who are concerned with reducing performance impacts, sectorization offers a clear nancial and performance advantage.
TenXcs advanced antenna solutions provide operators with a proven means to signicantly improve their service offering to end-users and to evolve their wireless networks efciently and protably.
TenXcs Bi-Sector Arrays provide a more elegant solution. They have been extensively deployed in CDMA and W-CDMA systems and shown to offer capacity gains in the DL of between 2 and 2.3 times capacity of a standard 3-sector deployment. The gains from the Bi-Sector Array have also been shown to be higher than even the ideal sectorization gains of 2 timesindeed, improved lined budget, interference control and optimized softer-handover losses all contribute to a greater than 2 times gain. Sectorization with the TenXc Bi-Sector Arrays will always create more capacity than carrier addition, particularly as sectorization gains are independent of the carrier counts. Another critical advantage of Bi-sector Arrays is that they allow an operator to boost capacity by converting only those sitesor even sectorswith serious capacity constraints. By avoiding the issues of hard handover, Bi-Sector Arrays allow capacity to be deployed without a reduction in coverage.
