About STRESS
Stress is a dynamic condition in which an individual is confronted with an opportunity, demand or resources related to what the individual desires and fornwhich the outcomes is perceived to be both uncertain and important. Stress has become the number one malady of our time. The constant pressure associated with living in a fast-paced world has created an environment where nearly everyone feels the effects of stress. The effects of stress in people are seen physically, mentally and emotionally. Stress is a term used to describe the wear and tear the body experiences in reaction to everyday tensions and pressures. Change, illness, injury or career and lifestyle changes, are common causes of stress, however, it's the effects of stress, like pressure and tension, that we feel in response to the little everyday hassleslike rush hour traffic, waiting in line, and too many emailsthat do the most damage. Stress is the body and mind's response to any pressure that disrupts its normal balance. It occurs when our perception of events doesn't meet our expectations and we are unable to manage our reaction. As a response, stress expresses itself as resistance, tension, strain or frustration that throws off our physiological and psychological equilibrium, keeping us out of sync. If our equilibrium is disturbed for long, the stress can become disabling and create numerous health problems. Stress and the effects of stress are often misunderstood. We look at outside events as the source of stress, but in fact stress is really caused by our emotional reactions to events. The stress we experience in today's world often goes unnoticed and unmanaged. Many people have simply adapted to stress in an unhealthy way,

resigned to thinking it's "just the way it is". Unfortunately, lack of stress management has created a pandemic of low-grade anxiety and depression.

How to relieve stress?

In order to effectively relieve stress it's important to understand it's not the external events or situations that do the harm; it's how you respond to those stressful events. More precisely, it's how you feel about them that determine whether you feel the negative effects of stress and ultimately relieve stress. Emotions, or feelings, have a powerful impact on the human body. Emotions like frustration, insecurity and depressing feelings are stressful and inhibit optimal health and relief from stress. Positive emotions like appreciation, care, and love not only feel good, they promote health, performance and well-being. HeartMath's research has shown when you learn how to intentionally shift to a positive emotion, heart rhythms immediately change. A shift in heart rhythms may not seem important but in fact it creates a favorable cascade of neural, hormonal and biochemical events that benefit the entire body. The stress relief effects are both immediate and long lasting.

Types of Stress: There are major four types of stress.

1). Chronic adjective: being long-lasting and recurrent or characterized by long suffering ("Chronic indigestion") adjective: having a habit of long standing ("A chronic smoker") 2). Acute having or experiencing a rapid onset and short but severe course ("Acute appendicitis") adjective: extremely sharp or intense ("Acute pain") 3). Eustress (Good Stress) stress that is deemed healthful or giving one the feeling of fulfillment 4). Distress (Bad Stress) great pain, anxiety, or sorrow; acute physical or mental suffering; affliction;

trouble. a state of extreme necessity or misfortune.

C). Importance of the study of Stress in Organisation:

If you cannot fully understand the importance of stress management, then try thinking in reverse. Imagine yourself not suffering from the negative impacts of stress. Without the negative results of stress in your life, then a person is able to enjoy a more satisfying and stress-free life. To sum it up, here are the benefits that can be derived with practicing an efficient stress management method: 1.It improves your overall health status. 2.You are able to assume a more positive attitude and outlook in life. 3.It increases your productivity since you are able to focus clearly on your tasks. 4.You have better control over your emotions and how you respond to them. 5.And more importantly, you reduce or eliminate negative stress in your life.
A Word About Positive Stress

Although "stress" has become synonymous with something bad, such as traffic jams and too many work demands, some stress is good for you. Pioneering stress researcher Hans Selye differentiated between damaging stress (distress) and positive stress (eustress). Positive stress can inspire us to do our best and to perform better than if we were under no stress. Psychologists tell us that our level of performance is directly related to the level of stress we experience. This theory says that low and high levels of arousal decrease performance, whereas intermediate levels enhance performance. In other words, we are capable of peak levels of performance when under a moderate amount of stress.
Impact of Negative Stress

Stress management is an essential step for you to take once you have determined you are facing stressful situations in your life, regardless of the cause. Although

there are helpful types of stress that enable you to cater this added burst of energy into something positive and productive, it is not recommended for your body. Long term negative stress can specifically produce negative impacts on your health and is recognized to deteriorate your health faster than some other diseases. Furthermore, negative stress can reduce your capacity to perform and function well, either at school or in the workplace. Therefore, stress isn't something to be dismissed. Aside from the personal impact you can experience from stress, it also affects how you deal with the environment and the people in your lives. When it comes to stress management, determining the source of stress is often not enough. For people who are often stressed, keeping a stress journal is highly recommended in order for you to monitor the different levels of stress you are experiencing and what effects it produced. This is an effective way for you to closely study your levels of stress, its triggers, and for you to pinpoint exactly what you can do to relieve yourself from it.
