The K to 12 Curriculum
The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of
primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School
[SHS] to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong
learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development,
employment, and entrepreneurship. Moreover, K to 12 education here in the
Philippines started to implement from year 2011 particularly there was an addition of
two years in the secondary level also called the Senior High school which covers the
grade 11 and 12 than the previous which only ten years of education and also changes
in the curriculum guide. Regarding the curriculum guide, K to 12 main goal of learning
was categorize in Contextualization and Enhancement, Spiral Progression, Mother
Tongue-Based Multilingual Education, Senior High School and College and Livelihood
Readiness, let Century Skills. This actually demonstrate that the competencies offers in
the K to 12 education become broader and vast, there was changes and addition of
subjects, the way of teaching of the teachers become different as they act as the
facilitator of learning rather than they spoon feed the information to the students, there
always must have an interaction between teacher and students wherein students at big
role in learning as they are also responsible to their learning and grades as the K to 12 is
learner-centered curriculum which they must cooperate in the class. Regarding the
grading system unlike the old curriculum in which extra-curricular activities were added
to grades now in K to 12 it was not counted. The grading system was described as a
standard and competency-based grading system which will be based on the weighted
raw score of the learners’ summative assessments with fewer components such Written
Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment.
To sum up everything that has been stated so far, K to 12 education helps filipino
students to be more equipped in knowledge, skills and information and be more
prepared in tertiary level. For me, K to 12 is relevant in our educational system, the
particular reason for this circumstance is that students become more competitive as
they teached in a learner-centered way that helps them to develop themselves in many
aspects.
