Tsunami+10: Exploring the legacy of the 2004 Tsunami & renewing our commitment

What happened after the camera crews left? After aid organizations had spent the worlds unprecedented donations? As the tsunamis 10th anniversary approaches, what can we learn about what was accomplished and how to do it better next time?
Disaster giving is potent: for the donations given and the chance to rebuild communities, we need to maximize it. The Dec. 26, 2004 quake and tsunami claimed more than 230,000 lives, making it one of the five worst disasters in modern times. Unique among disasters, its death toll was global, taking from 14 nations. And in a tragic twist, two chronic conflict zones received an historic infusion of aid and personnel. By different paths, both Sri Lanka and Aceh are at peace today.

This seminal disaster spawned a record $13.4 billion in global aid, including $3.1 billion from the US. My organization handled $5M+ and helped thousands of donors with personalized giving.

Now, we are going back.

Returning to communities to explore the long-term legacy of philanthropy almost 10 years later.

And revisiting contributors, such as supermodel Petra Nemcova and actor Jet Li, whose lives, too, were transformed.

We are well on our way after an August 2012 trip to Sri Lanka.

We travelled to the East, where echoes of both tsunami and conflict remain loud and present.

We found individual beneficiaries from our projects, discovering years later how a moment of philanthropy affected their lives.

We met local civil society, former grantees, politicians, artists and national leaders to learn what worked well and what might be done differently and what Sri Lanka needs today.

We arent the only ones drawn to this tsunami: The Impossible premiered Dec. 21, 2012, and tells the story of a tourist family caught by the wave in Thailand. Riding the movies coattails and a few award nominations,

we launched Tsunami+10s first set of deliverables and outreach activities.

We coined the phrased Diversified Disaster Giving to capture our basic advocacy messages: give to local organizations as well as larger relief groups; give to recovery in addition to relief; and give more than once, in the moment but also reserving some of your decisions until the situation has settled. We produced a special mini-documentary of our Sri Lanka trip, To Sandy, From Sri Lanka. (1,000+ views/likes) We are equally proud of our Viewers Guide, Beyond The Impossible, which tells the big picture of the tsunami and the recovery. (16,100+ views)

Mike wrote a movie review for SSIR, and Mayra is taking her skills, care and storytelling to Sandy recovery in her homestate of New Jersey. We were featured in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Variety and Nonprofit Times, and also via the Council on Foundations and Center for Disaster Philanthropy. We have interviewed the movies director and received direct feedback from Thai viewers. 11,000+ have visited www.TsunamiPlus10.org and we have 2,000+ followers on Facebook.
