1 Student Technology Integration: BHS Help Desk Professor: Calvin/Marcinek Meeting Time(s): Course Description The Student Technology

Integration course is a hands on study of technology integration in an educational context. Students will be required to assess problem sets throughout the day and define the best approach to addressing or solving the problem. In addition to solving problems for students and teachers, students will be required to complete and maintain several running projects that address problems or solutions in educational technology integration. The course also asks students to have a prior understanding of Apple OS, Microsoft Windows OS, and the iPad iOS.

Help Desk Expectations and Projects 1 Students must maintain a digital portfolio that will chronicle their progress and serve as the reflective piece of this course. There is no defined length or content requirements, however students should synthesize their learning with their progress and the products they create. Moreover, this portfolio will be a living, sustainable history of students learning in this course. Secondly, the portfolio will serve as a digital resource that will demonstrate student learning and understanding throughout the course of the semester. In addition, students will select one article or essay each week from a popular technology website or blog, read the piece, bring it to class for discussion during long blog, and then present a critical analysis of the the piece on your digital portfolio. a The portfolio will be a comprehensive piece that should be compiled throughout the course of the semester. The components of the portfolio should consist of the following items: i Tech Academy module projects - This should include a section for the final videos, reflective pieces throughout the project, and proposal posts. ii Critical Analysis pieces - These pieces will be posted at least once a week. They should include the link to the article you are covering, the title of the article and the authors name. You should provide a thorough analysis of this article and be prepared to discuss it in class. Also, posts will be assessed for spelling, grammar and punctuation. iii Google Broadcasts - All of your scripts and show commentary should be posted on the blog as well. The portfolio will be part of a capstone project for the course. This portfolio will be presented or demonstrated at the conclusion of the course and presented in front of a panel of your peers, who, along with the professors, will assess the project. This will be done in the form of a TED talk. Additional requirements and parameters will be presented two weeks before the class commences.

Each student will have a weekly schedule. This will be kept on a shared Google Calendar for all to access and see. This calendar will serve as your weekly guide. This calendar will include pathway project due dates, Google Hangout Broadcasting schedule, and blog post schedule. Students should check this schedule every Monday and we will review the weeks items each Monday in class.

2 Students are expected to complete the calendar items and projects for the week. 3 Google Hangout Broadcasting. Each week we will designate a time to broadcast our soon to be named tech show. We will use the Google Hangout platform to broadcast our sessions live as well as archive each show on a help desk YouTube Channel. Students are responsible for the following items for each broadcast: a An approved script that includes i a theme or a focus ii talking points iii timestamps (how long you expect each segment or talking point to run throughout the show) iv Key points of your demonstration or tutorial BHS Tech Academy. This portion of the course will run throughout the entire semester and will require the attention of each student from week to week. In this section, we will be creating modules for learning a variety of applications. Each module will focus on one application and serve as a learning series for our community to access if they would like to learn a new application. What we will be creating is a Khan Academy-esque open educational resource that our community can access if they would like to learn more about technology and the applications we use daily at Burlington. Every module should include the following items: a Goal or objective - What application do you want to cover? And why? How does this app fit into the educational context? b Module Script or outline - This module should feature a learning progression from basic concepts of the application to more advanced concepts. c Timeline for completion - How long do you expect this module creation to take? d Answers the question: How will my work contribute to the educational technology vision plan of Burlington Public Schools?

Consider the list below as a starting point for setting out on a tech academy module project. This will require a lot of work and demand that you become familiar with the EdCamp model. There is a lot of information out there on what an EdCamp is and plenty of people who have organized an EdCamp. By default, you will be using technology to connect with these people to get a better understanding of what an EdCamp is and how you can successfully plan and host one at BHS. All help desk students are expected to maintain a strong grade point average throughout the year and carry themselves as professionals. Throughout the course, students will be expected to interact and engage with faculty, staff and students in a courteous, respectful manner.
