Howto Backup VMs on VmWare Using NetBackup 7

This document tries to cover the backup of Virtual Machines inside a Vmware server using NetBackup 7. NetBackup 7 is now fully integrated with VmWare using VStorage API and does not require a storage space for snapshots. NetBackup directly backups the snapshots.Requirements 1. VCB Proxy host is not required anymore but you still need a backup host. This needs to be a Windows-based host. Windows Server 2003 (32 or 64-bit) Windows Server 2003 R2 (32 or 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 (32 or 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) You use a NetBackup master or media server for this role if you have any 2. You need NetBackup Enterprise Client license 3. If ESX server is used, it should be at least version 3.5 If Virtual Center is used it should be at least version 2.5. Earlier versions of ESX servers are supported if they are backed up through Virtual Center (2.5 or later). 4. SAN & Storage must be configured so that Backup Host can see the vm disks. 5. Disable automount feature on windows to be safe.

Setup
Our setup is quite simple in this example: We have; One ESX server connected to an SAN & Storage One NetBackup Master/Media server also used as the VMware Backup Host

Configuration
Add NetBackup Master server to itself as the VMware Backup Host through: NetBackup Management -> Host Properties -> Master Servers (Double click on your master server)

Add your ESX server through and fill the required fields: Media and Device Management -> Credentials -> Virtual Machine Server -> Right Click -> New
