A trip to Chiinu

The Gates of Chisinau are a complex of buildings with many levels situated on the Dacia Bulevard, at the entrance of Chisinau from the airport. To the left there is situated the Zoo and to the right the Botanical Garden. The Gates of Chiinu were constructed after an idea of the architect Iuri Tumanean.

The Stephen the Great Monument (Romanian: Monumentul lui tefan cel Mare) is a prominent monument in Chiinu, The monument to Stephen the Great was designed by architect Alexandru Plmdeal in 1923. It is made of bronze and stone. The monument was completed in 1927 and opened on 29 April, marking the 470th birthday of Stephen the Great. It is situated at the main entrance of the Stephen the Great in Central Chiinu

tefan cel Mare Central Park (Romanian: Parcul tefan cel Mare) is the main park in Central Chiinu. Formerly known as Pushkin Park, it is the oldest park in Moldova and spans about 7 hectares (17 acres). It has gained the nickname "The Park of the Lovers" in Chiinu due to its popularity as a meeting spot for couples. The park contains 50 species of trees The park was originally laid out in 1818 by Russian military engineers during the reign of Alexander I.

In 1958, the Avenue of the Classics of Moldovan Literature was opened, lined with statues and bronze busts of Romanian and Moldovan authors and social figures. The idea of a sculptural complex was launched by the interwar sculptor Alexandru Plmdeal, who dream to create an open-air museum. The entrance to the avenue is guarded by marble lions by an unknown sculptor. The avenue includes such famous figures as Mihai Eminescu, Vasile Alecsandri, Gheorghe Asachi, Lucian Blaga, Ion Creang, Mircea Eliade. In 2009, free park WiFi access was launched.

The Triumphal arch is a monument in Central Chiinu. The Triumphal arch was built in 1841 and restored in 1973. It has two levels. Its height is of 13 m. The four pilons of the construction were built in corintic style. The superior level is decorated in classic style. On the front there is mounted a mechanical clock.

The Cathedral of Christ's Nativity (Romanian: Catedrala Mitropolitan Naterea Domnului) is the main cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church in Central Chiinu. The cathedral was built in the 1830s to a Neoclassical design by Abram Melnikov. The cathedral has a symetrical compozition. The ensemble consists of the cathedral church and the bell tower. The cathedral was bombed during the World War II, and its bell tower was destroyed by the local Communists in 1962. The new bell tower was constructed in 1997.

Situated in one of the most beautiful buildings in the centre of the city, the Organ Hall from Chisinau is a leading cultural and artistic institution of the Republic of Moldova whose activity has a crucial meaning in the capital's cultural life. Due to a series of important events (festivals, contests etc.) it even has an international importance The building of the Organ Hall has a unique beauty.Designed and built at the end of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th century , the Organ Hall impresses by its monumental forms executed prevalently in classic style, also containing some elements of the romantic art.

Near the Orga Hall there is a little handicraft square called Vernisaj. There you can admire the most beautiful works of art and crafts. This is the ideal place for you to buy souvenirs that will remind you of Chisinau: spoons, wooden toys and figurines of straw - all in traditional style.

The National History Museum of Moldova (Romanian: Muzeul Naional de Arheologie i Istorie a Moldovei) is a museum in Central Chiinu, Moldova. Over 263,000 exhibits, 165,000 of which belong to the national heritage, are exhibited in the National Museum of History, founded in 1983 on the former Regional Lyceum. It is situated on 121a, 31 August 1989 str., in the historical center of Chiinu.

In the museum yard there is the Capitoline Wolf, the copy of the one in Rome. Every year almost 15 exhibitions are held in the museum; which are important events in Moldova. The museum is structured into many scientific sections: Ancient History and Archaeology, Medieval History, History of Basarabia, Contemporary History, Treasures.

National Art Museum of Moldova is situated in the centre of Chisinau and is the only institution of such a type in Republic of Moldova. Beginning with 1989 the whole exhibition and administrative activity of the National Art Museum of Moldova is carried on in Natalia Dadiani premise. It was built in 1900-1901 according to the design of the architect Alexandru Bernardazzi. The building stands as a sample of civil architecture of the end of the 19th beginning of the 20th century with its specific neoclassicist style with gothic elements.

In 1939 the remarkable sculptor Alexandru Plamadeala selects 160 works of Bassarabian and Romanian artists in order to set up the first Picture Gallery of Chisinau. In the future its successor becomes National Art Museum of Moldova. The exhibition was based on the funds donated by Tretiakov Gallery and Hermitage. At present the funds of National Art Museum of Moldova count more than 39 000 art works and reflects the evolution of arts in the 15th-21st centuries.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is located in the South-East of Chisinau city, on an area of 104 ha and is crossed by river Valea Crucii There are different sectors specialized on specific plants like Rosarium (garden of roses) Garden of trees with guided coronae,the Lianarium (exhibition of climbing woody plants lianas), Rokarium (garden with stones and gravel), an alley with Japanese plants and plum trees, Ornamental exhibition and other thematical sectors. Excursions in the complex of greenhouses happen every day between 9:00 am . 2:00 pm. for the entire year. On Fridays the trips take place between the hours 9:00 am. -12:00 pm.
