National Museum of Art of Moldova

The National Museum of Art of Moldova (MNAM) is a museum in the center of

Chisinau, the only institution of this profile in the Republic of Moldova. It was
founded by Alexandru Plămădeală and Auguste Baillayre in 1939. Currently, the
MNAM patrimony has over 39,000 works, which reflect the development of the
fine arts of the 20th century. XV-XXI. In the permanent museum there are
exhibitions of European, Russian and Oriental art. In 1939, the sculptor Alexandru
Plămădeală selects around 160 works of the Bessarabian and Romanian artists,
for the creation of the first art gallery in Chisinau, the chief curator being named
Auguste Baillayre. The inauguration of the Pinacoteca, takes place on November
26, 1939, this, in fact, signifying the opening of the first art museum, whose
successor became MNAM today. In the first days of World War II the works of the
Pinacoteca were loaded in two wagons and sent to Kharkov; their fate remains
unknown until today. Towards the end of 1944, based on transfers of funds from
Tretiakov Gallery and Ermitaj, the museum resumed its activity with the
inauguration of permanent exhibitions . The museum is located in the building of
the former girls' gymnasium founded by Princess N. G. Dadiani.
The collection of the museum has been completed over time, with
old icons, works by Bessarabian and Russian painters, Western
Europe, Japan, India, China. In 1947, through the will of the
professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Pavel
Tillingovski, MNAM was donated an imposing collection of graphic

Durer, William Hogarth, Katty Kolvitz, Piotr Utkin, Vasili Perov, Filipp
