Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is Burma’s most celebrated and beloved person inthe struggle for freedom in Burma. She has been under house arrest continuously since May 2003 and for a total of more than 13 of the past 19 years. She was supposed to be released from house arrest on the 27th of May. However, on May 13th, DawSuu and her two female colleagues were detained after an incident when an American citizen allegedlyswam across Inya Lake and stayed at her house for two days. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been chargedunder the regime’s Law Safeguarding the State from the Dangers of Subversive Elements and is beingheld in the notorious Insein Prison. Her trial is scheduled for May 18.Her health has deteriorated recently due to the tight restrictions during her prolong detention. She hasoften been denied access to her personal doctor, who also was arrested last Thursday at the time of hismonthly visit.Burmese democracy movement activists and supporters around the globe are planning a ‘Global Day of Action’ on May 18, 2008 to demand her release and the release of all political prisoners in Burma.71 organizations from "Global Action for Burma" (http://gab-burma.weebly.com) will take part in thisactivity. We invite all freedom loving supporters of Burma to join us in support of Aung San Suu Kyi and her struggle for freedom and democracy in Burma.
