This upcoming August 8, 2009 is a momentous day for Burma, for years ago on this date
people from all walks of life throughout Burma came out in unison to call for freedom,
democracy and justice in Burma. The military regime responded to these peaceful calls
for democracy by using lethal force, killing many innocent people -- about 3000 --
including many students and monks.
To this date, the military regime has continued its atrocities. The regime continues to
harass and arrest many human rights activists, including Noble Laureate Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi. Many democracy activists have died during peaceful demonstrations, during
regime interrogations, and also while imprisoned due to systematic abuse targeted at
political prisoners.
Democratic Forces in New York will be holding a protest in front of the office of the
illegitimate Consulate General of Myanmar in remembrance of those fallen heroes who
have given their lives for freedom, democracy and justice in Burma.
Everyone is welcome to attend and we invite all to give their respect and support to those
who have sacrificed their safety and lives for democracy.
