Police arrest suspect after he turns himself in
By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com A suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run bicycle crash in Minneapolis last week that killed a 24year-old woman with close ties to the Hoffman-Kensington area. Minneapolis police arrested Abdirahman Abdi Ali, 24, Monday morning after he turned himself in. Jessica Hanson, a server at an Uptown bar, was on her way to her boyfriends house last Wednesday night at about 10:30 p.m. when she was struck at the intersection of 28th Street and Pleasant Avenue South in Minneapolis. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center and pronounced Jess Hanson dead on Friday morning. According to police, the 1989-2013 vehicle involved was driving faster than the speed limit with its lights off when it ran a stop sign, hit Hanson and left the scene. Using information from witnesses, Minneapolis police located Alis vehicle and were looking for him after making contacts within the community, according to a news release. CRASH A7

Veterans Affairs sets sights on suicide prevention

Death certificate errors revealed through study
By Crystal Dey cdey@echopress.com Twenty-two veterans die by suicide every day in the U.S. Any suicide statistic is too great a number, but taking into consideration the total U.S. population (315 million) and the number of veterans (22 million), that percentage is disproportionately high. Since 2001, per-day veteran suicides have remained between 18 and 22 nationally. In Minnesota, approximately 20 percent of people who die by suicide are veterans. There are 3,169 veterans living in Douglas County.
