D. PRESENTATIONS
Thao Nguyen and Roshni D’Souza explained that the Langley Service Canada
Centre for Youth is an organization that targets young people, secondary and post-
secondary students. The primary mandate of the Centre is to assist students in their
search for summer employment by connecting them with local employers and
helping them prepare their resumes. It also gives students information on post
secondary student loan programs. More information on the programs offered by the
Langley Service Canada Centre for youth can be obtained from their website -
http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca

2. Council Update
Councillor S. Ferguson reported that there are a number of major events taking
place in the Township.

The Langley Youth Festival will be held on June 19, 2009 at the Fort Langley
National Historic Site. The members were requested to pick up posters and have
them displayed at their schools.
The children’s events will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and events for
youth are scheduled from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The battle of the bands begin at
4:00 p.m.
There will be youth art displays, a café and displays by various vendors. The cost is
$5 per person and the proceeds will go the School District Foundation. Tom Lee
Music is one of the major sponsors.

R. McFarlane reported that the School Board is going through its budget process.

A. Azevedo reported that she could not attend most of the meetings as there were
held during school hours, however, she did volunteer to help at the event. She also
participated in Youth week which was held around the same time.
L. OTHER BUSINESS
1. Wrap-up event
The wrap-up event of the Youth Advisory Committee will be held on June 4, 2009 at
the Willowbrook Lanes at 5:00 p.m. followed by dinner at the White Spot restaurant.
V. Keffer will send out an email giving details of the event. Members were
requested to inform her as soon as possible regarding their attendance.
A. Thorpe handed out an invitation to the opening of the Langley Events Centre that
will take place on June 13, 2009. He is currently looking for volunteers to help in the
media room. Members interested in volunteering to email V. Keffer.
M. ROUND TABLE
1. Langley Fundamental School – The graduation ceremony will take place on June
19, 2009.
2. Walnut Grove Secondary School – The Students Council elections took place on
May 15, 2009 and P. Strand has been elected Vice President for the year 2009/10.
P. Horton was the emcee for the battle of the bands and 10 bands from the school
competed for the title. P. Wang won a silver award for the math competition for the
Grade 11’s.

M. ROUND TABLE
4. Langley Christian School – The senior orchestra and choir participated in the Music
Festival Canada competition in Markham, Ontario. Marrk Warawa introduced the
school to the House of Commons in Ottawa. The battle of the bands competition
took place on May 22, 2009.
5. Brookswood Secondary – the students council elections will be held shortly. The
students will also be participating in a 24 hour famine and the proceeds will go to
feed the hungry.
6. DW Poppy – The school organized a 30 hour famine and raised $3,000 for World
Vision. The school also organized a dance with the Hawk Rocks.
7. Langley Fine Arts – The students attended the Les Mis̀erables play. On Friday
they are having a grad sleep over. The Students council is organizing a beach
party dance.
8. K. Van Geel reported that the Langley Senior Resource Centre is looking for
volunteers. If anyone is interested to contact V. Keffer.
