Welcome to the public consultation on thefuture of Bristol City Football Club’s AshtonGate site.
The present stadium site plays a crucial role in securing theClub’s future plans for a new regional stadium at Ashton Vale. As the Club’s main asset, its redevelopment is essential to thefunding of the new stadium, ensuring the long term financialviability of the Club, continuing the regeneration of south Bristoland supporting Bristol in bidding to be a 2018 World Cuphost city. The Club have decided that a foodstore development of thestadium site provides the necessary financial input, and has thepotential to provide further economic and community benefits tothe area. To this end, the Club have been working with Tesco todraw up initial ideas for how such a scheme might be delivered. The purpose of this exhibition is to tell you more about theemerging proposals and seek your views and comments onthe scheme. As you view the panels, please feel free to askquestions and discuss the proposals with members of theconsultation team attending the event. A feedback form is available for you to record your commentsand observations on the issues set out at this event.

Bristol City Football Club has played at AshtonGate since 1904. During that time the stadiumhas become a major part of the social andeconomic make-up of the area. However thestadium is now placing constraints on theClub’s aspirations for the future.
Having investigated the options, it is felt that the Clubrequires a new home and plans for a new stadium at Ashton Vale are well advanced. This fits with the aspirations of theClub and supports the role of Bristol as a regional sportingvenue for the South West. It also has the potential to givea major economic boost to the region as well as theregeneration of nearby South Bristol. However a new stadium is expensive and to ensure thatit can be delivered, it is important that the Club is able torealise the value of its main asset – the existing stadium at Ashton Gate.

Having explored all the options Bristol CityFootball Club has decided that the mostappropriate option for the redevelopmentof the Gate site is as a foodstore.
Achieving the required financial return from the redevelopmentof the Club’s Ashton Gate site will ensure that the RegionalStadium development can go ahead and will keep alive thepossibility of Bristol hosting 2018 World Cup matches. This will yield the necessary land value for the site, which will enable delivery of the new Regional Stadiumat Aston Vale.A foodstore development is less affected by recessioncompared with other land-uses and will therefore bea more reliable development proposal for the 2018World Cup bidding process which starts shortly.A foodstore will provide a wide range of communitybenefits including around 400 new jobs, new servicesand facilities. The Club are therefore delighted that Tesco are interested inbeing involved and have been working with them to draw upinitial plans for how such a scheme might be delivered and thebenefits that it could bring to the area.
