    SAN DIEGO – (August 22, 2013) – San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out the seventh home restoration project as part of Embrace’s “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” program on October 16-21, 2013. The six-day effort will take place at the San Diego home of paralyzed, active duty, Navy Commanding Officer, Brian DeLaney. Due to a motorcycle accident in 2012, DeLaney is now paralyzed from the armpits down and suffers from T3 spinal cord separation. The project for DeLaney’s home includes extensive front and backyard remodeling; complete kitchen remodeling to include ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant cabinets and countertops; flatwork, spare and master bathroom remodeling including widening of doorways to allow wheelchair access; construction of a permanent and a wheelchair accessible BBQ pit. Labor and materials estimated to be worth approximately $85,000. “Upon meeting Commander Delaney, his family and surveying their home, I immediately knew that we’d be doing all would could to help make life a little easier for Brian,” said Sean Sheppard, CEO. “Our volunteers and sponsors are extremely excited to serve this member of our armed forces.” Since graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1995, DeLaney has served as a First Division Officer, Combat System Officer, Operations Officer, Executive Officer and eventually Commanding Officer of the USS Harpers Ferry. During his service he completed deployments to the Arabian Gulf, volunteered for a tour in Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned his Masters Degree in Transportation Management. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities.  The title sponsors for this project are McCarthy Building Companies Inc., The Home Depot Foundation, SDG&E and The Jack In The Box Foundation.   All Embrace programs aim to create a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic service learning experience for college students, connect young adults to veteran community members in need, raise awareness of low income, disabled veterans, and increase the value and efficient use of their homes.    For more information on Embrace and the H3 program, visit www.embrace1.org/h3.
