Maximum Marks : 80

Maximum Time : 3 - 31/2 hours

General Instructions : Same as in CBSE Sample Question Paper SECTION A 1. Name a noble gas having : (i) duplet structure (ii) an octet structure. [1] Ans. (i) Helium has a duplet structure. (ii) Neon has an octet structure. 2. Why does copper react with nitrate solution? [1] Ans. Copper is higher in the metal activity series than silver. Thus, it displaces silver from silver nitrate solution, so as to form copper nitrate. 3. State Ohm's law. [1] Ans. All physical conditions of a conductor remaining same, the current flowing through it is directly proportional to the potential difference at its ends. 4. What is the magnitude of solar constant for the Earth? [1] 2 1 Ans. The magnitude of solar constant for the Earth is 1.4 kJm s . 5. Correct the formulae and balance the following equation. [2] K(s) + H2O(l) KOH (aq) + H (g) Ans. 2K (s) + 2H2O (l) 2KOH (aq) + H2 (g) 6. Why are the halides (chloride, bromide, and iodide) of silver kept in dark brown or black coloured bottles? [2] Ans. The halides of silver on absorbing sunlight decompose to form silver metal and a halogen. Thus to prevent their decomposition they are kept in brown or black coloured bottles, so that no light reaches them. 7. State whether a given solution is acidic/alkaline/neutral in nature when its pH is : (i) 2 (ii) 7 (iii) 13 [2] Ans. (i) Solution with pH 2 is acidic. (ii) Solution with pH 7 is neutral. (iii) Solution with pH 13 is alkaline. 8. How do roots respire? [2] Ans. Roots take in oxygen present in the soil by the process of diffusion through the root hairs. Similarly, carbon dioxide from the root cells diffuses out. 9. Explain, why an ion is more stable than its atom. [2] Ans. An ion is formed when an atom gains or loses electrons from its valence shell so as to attain a structure of the nearest noble gas. Once an ion is formed, its valence shell
1

has an electronic configuration of a noble gas and hence it cannot enter into any chemical reaction. Thus, the ions become more stable than its atom. 10. Write two examples of fossil fuel. Why are they preferred to wood? [2] Ans. Coal and petroleum are two examples of fossil fuel. Fossil fuels have higher calorific value as compared to wood. So they are preferred. 11. (a) Which among iron and mercury is a better conductor? [2] (b) Which material is the best conductor? Ans. (a) Mercury is a better conductor than iron as it has a lower resistivity than iron. Ans.

1. On pouring dilute sulphuric acid, a highly effervescent reaction takes place with the liberation of colourless and odourless carbon dioxide gas. 2. The reaction mixture gets warm as the reaction is exothermic. Na2SO4(aq) + 2CO2(g) + 2H2O(l) 2NaHCO3 (s) + H2SO4(aq) 17. Define nerve impulse. Which structure in a neuron helps to conduct a nerve impulse : [3] (i) towards the cell body? (ii) away from the cell body? The information passing through the neurons in the form of chemical and electrical signals is called nerve impulse. (i) Dendrioles Towards the cell body. (ii) Axon Away from the cell body. How do auxins promote the growth of a tendril around a support? [3] Auxins stimulate cell elongation and growth. It is observed that the shoot tips bend towards a unilateral source of light. The hormone synthesised at the shoot tips helps in the bending of shoots towards the light source. When light falls on one side of the plant, auxin diffuses towards the shady or dark side of the shoot. More concentration of auxin on the dark side stimulates more cell elongation on this side than the lighted side. As a result, the dark side grows more and the shoot bends towards light. State the advantages of obtaining biogas from animal dung and biowastes. [3] (i) Biogas is a clean fuel which produces no atmospheric pollution and hence can be used in homes, industry or for generating electricity. (ii) Biogas as a fuel, does not leave behind any ash. (iii) The spent slurry of biogas is an excellent farm manure.

How does a solenoid behave like a magnet? Can you determine the north and south poles of a current-carrying solenoid with the help of a bar magnet? Explain. [3] Ans. When the current flows through a solenoid, each turn of it sets up a magnetic field which is at right angles to the plane of the coil. Thus, each turn in its own right behaves like a magnet, such that its one face is north pole, and the other face is south pole. As these tiny magnets in the form of turns are arranged along the same axis, therefore, the solenoid on the whole behaves like a magnet. In order to find the polarity of the solenoid, suspend it freely so that it is pointing in the north-south direction. Now bring the north pole of a permanent bar magnet near one end of the solenoid. If this end gets repelled then this is the north pole of the solenoid.

23. Give reasons for the following : [5] (i) Zinc oxide is considered as an amphoteric oxide. (ii) Non-metals in general do not displace hydrogen from dilute acids. (iii) Metals conduct electricity. Ans. (i) Zinc oxide reacts with acids as well as caustic alkalis to form salt and water as the only products and hence, it is called an amphoteric oxide. (ii) It is because the ionisation potential of most of the non-metals is lower than hydrogen. Thus, non-metals cannot displace hydrogen from dilute acids. (iii) Metals have one to three electrons in their valence shell and these are very loosely held by the nucleus. Thus, when an electric potential is applied at the ends of a metal object, these free electrons start drifting in some particular direction, thereby making the metals good conductors of electricity. OR What is galvanised iron ? How iron is galvanised ? What is the advantage of galvanised iron ? How does galvanised iron get its name ? State its two uses. [5] Ans. (i) The iron whose surface is coated with a thin layer of zinc is called galvanised iron. (ii) The iron sheets are passed through molten zinc, when the zinc sticks to the surface of iron. These sheets are then passed through heavy steel rollers, heated to 300C, when the thin layer of zinc gets compacted with iron. (iii) Galvanised iron does not rust, because the surface of iron is not exposed to moist air. (iv) It is because of the similarity of the electro-chemical process involved in the galvanic cell and coating of zinc with iron, that the product is called galvanised iron. (v) (a) It is used for making iron roofing. (b) It is used for making suitcases, trunks, drain pipes, etc. 24. Make a comparison between photosynthesis and respiration. [5] Ans. Photosynthesis
1. It takes place only in the presence of light. 2. Only green cells of plants can perform photosynthesis. 3. It takes place inside chloroplast. 4. It is an anabolic process in which complex compounds (sugars) are broken down into simpler (CO2 and H2O) compounds.

Respiration
It occurs in all the tissues during both day and night. This occurs in all the cells of an organism. Aerobic respiration involves mitochondria and cytoplasm. It is a catabolic process in which complex compounds (sugars) are formed from the inorganic substances (CO2 and H2O). [5]

OR How does an artificial kidney or a dialysis machine work?

5

Ans. DIALYSIS MACHINE (i) An artificial kidney contains a number of tubes. Each tube contains a semipermeable lining suspended in a tank filled with dialysing fluid and having the same osmotic pressure as blood. (ii) The patients blood is passed through these tubes. The waste products from the blood pass into the dialysing fluid. (iii) The purified blood is sent back into the patients body. In an adult 180 litre of blood is filtered by the kidneys daily. 25. (a) What is meant by magnetic field? [5] (b) How is the direction of magnetic field at a point determined? (c) Describe an activity to demonstrate the direction of the magnetic field generated around a current carrying conductor. (d) What is the direction of magnetic field at the centre of the current carrying circular loop? (a) Magnetic field : The space surrounding a bar magnet in which its influence in the form of magnetic force can be detected, is called magnetic field. (b) The direction of magnetic field line is determined by a tracing compass. The direction in which the north pole of the tracing needle points, gives the direction of the magnetic field line. (c) Activity
Take a stiff cardboard and fix a white sheet of paper over it. Clamp the cardboard in a wooden stand in the horizontal position. Make a hole in the middle of the cardboard. Pass two or more turns of thick insulated copper wire through the hole and connect its ends to a battery, through a switch K and a variable resistance as shown in the figure. Sprinkle some fine iron powder on the paper evenly. Pass the current by closing the switch K and gently tap the cardboard. It is seen that the iron powder arranges itself in the form of concentric circles, thereby, showing the existence of magnetic field lines around the conductor. The direction of the magnetic field lines can be determined by placing a tracing compass along the circumference (boundary) of any of the concentric circles. The direction in which the north pole of a compass needle points, gives the direction of the magnetic field lines. (d) At the centre of the circular loop, the direction of the magnetic field is opposite to the direction of the magnetic field outside the coil.

OR (a) Describe with diagram an experiment to show that a force is exerted on a current carrying conductor when placed perpendicular in a magnetic field. [5] (b) State the rule to find the direction of the force exerted on a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field. Ans.
(a) Experiment Take a small aluminium rod AB. Suspend it horizontally by means of two connecting wires from a stand, as shown in the figure. Now, place a strong horse-shoe magnet in such a way that the rod is between the two poles with the field directed upwards. If a current is now passed in the rod from B to A, you will observe that the rod gets displaced. This displacement is caused by the force acting on the current carrying rod. The magnet exerts a force on the rod directed towards the left, with the result that the rod gets deflected to the left. If you reverse the current or interchange the poles of the magnet, the deflection of the rod will reverse, indicating thereby that the direction of the force acting on it gets reversed. This shows that there is a relationship among the direction of the current, the magnetic field and the motion of the conductor. (b) The direction of the force exerted on a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field can be found by Flemings left hand rule.

Flemings left hand rule Stretch the thumb, the forefinger and the middle finger of your left hand mutually at right angles to each other, such that the forefinger points in the direction of the magnetic field and the middle finger in the direction of the flow of current. Then, the thumb gives the direction of the motion of the conductor.
