Welcome
September 29 2013
Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here. In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete. There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door".

Just a Minute
An off-duty member of Britain's Special Forces reportedly helped save a hundred lives as terrorists launched their attack on a Kenyan shopping mall last week. The Daily Mail reports sources as crediting the soldier as a hero of the Nairobi siege after intervening with a handgun as his only weapon. His story emerged after he was photographed - gun tucked into his pants - helping to guide two women away from the carnage. He is said to have then returned to the building which was ringing with intense gunfire. A friend in Nairobi said: "What he did was so heroic. He was having coffee with friends when it happened. He went back in 12 times and saved 100 people. Imagine going back in when you knew what was going on inside." Made me think about how we use the term hero in our modern world. We read the story of this man in Nairobi and in the same breath we talk about a bunch of footballers winning an AFL premiership as being heroes. I saw horrific photos of the bombing of an Anglican Church in Pakistan last week that killed 100 people. These were people standing outside their Church when in a moment; family and friends were taken from them without warning. One man lost 5 family members in the blast. The photos were horrific, but perhaps the one that moved me most was that of a man with anguish all over his face as he felt so helplessly inadequate in the face of such pain and loss and insanity. Those who carried out this atrocity are hailed heroes by those who hold to the same fanatical religious beliefs. Our world is looking for heroes. I enjoy watching footballers play the game that I love. I admire the SAS soldier who rescued people from imminent death; I abhor those terrorists who simply regard a child's life as a commodity that can buy notoriety for their cause. But I want to emulate that man who bore the weight of the pain and savagery of what happened outside his Church. He probably felt nothing like a hero. In fact he probably felt just the opposite, as he sat there helpless, broken and with a numbing sense of futility as he looked around him. But in a world like we live in, I want to be a person with a heart like that. I dont care whether anyone sees it, or knows it, or hails it as anything special. I want to be a person like that, not just in the crisis of life, but in those unremarkable moments when God is saying. Whom will I send, who will go for us? Here am I lord, send me! God Bless Neil
