HOST INSTITUTION AND VENUE

Sokoine University of Agriculture will host the Conference at its Institute of Continuing Education. An opening ceremony will be held the evening of November 12. Technical sessions will be held November 13, 14 and 15. The conference language is English.

CONFERENCE RATIONALE CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

1. 2. 3. Describe the importance of soil/terrestrial C pools in soils of Sub-Saharan Africa to adaptation and mitigation of climate change Deliberate the role of land use, soil and crop/ animal/tree management systems on soil carbon dynamics, soil quality and productivity Debate the importance of economic, social (gender), policy and cultural factors on adaption of RMPs by small landholders of Sub-Saharan Africa Explain relationship between terrestrial C pool and ecosystem services Create network of researchers to work on issues related to soil C management for adaptation / mitigation of climate change Collate and synthesize state-of-the-knowledge on soil/terrestrial C in Sub-Saharan Africa Identify research, development, and training priorities for SSA. Most national economies in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are growing rapidly. The annual rate of growth of GDP is 18% in Sierra Leone, 12% in Niger, 9% in Ethiopia, and 7% in Ghana. Crop yields and agronomic production have also improved; however, the rate of growth of agronomic production is low. A large gap exists between potential yields of crops and actual yields. Yields are low because of degraded and depleted soils, limited use of external inputs, such as fertilizers and irrigation, and changing climatic conditions including increased frequencies and intensities of extreme events, such as droughts and floods. Poverty and hunger continue to be prevailing problems resulting in high levels of child mortality and disease. These negative outcomes are likely to be exacerbated by climate change. Adapting to climate change through the adoption of appropriate alternative management practices is essential in order to enhance agricultural production, alleviate hunger and poverty and improve the environment. Carbon sequestration in soils, vegetation, and wetlands can play a critical role in improving positive functions of agroecosystems. Simultaneously, the quality of depleted/ degraded soils can be enhanced through sustainable intensification of agriculture. This, in turn, will help bridge the yield gap, avoid deforestation and save land for nature conservation.

EXPECTED OUTPUT
A. Papers from conference published as special issue of a reviewed, scientific journal B. A modus operandi for establishment of regional cooperative networks C. A platform to create North-South and SouthSouth cooperation in sustainable intensification, and adaptation/mitigation of climate change D. Recommendations for programs to increase production in sustainable ways under climate change

4. 5. 6. 7.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
International participants will most likely arrive at Dar es Salaam by air and then travel overland to Morogoro. The Conference organizers will arrange for in-country travel.
