Oh When the Saints Go Marching In!
All Saints Celebration, Nov. 3!
All of us are called to put our faith into
action by offering thanks to God and
joining God in his mission in our church
and community. Nativitys stewardship
campaign this year kicked off on Sunday,
Oct. 27, continues on Sunday, Nov. 3 with
a terrific All Saints event, and concludes
on Sunday, Nov. 17. Bring or mail your
pledge cards to church at any time during
that period.

Sunday, November 3 will be a wonderful All Saints
celebration, New Orleans style! Our 9:30 and 11:30
services will be combined into one 10:00 celebration
service that will feature the music of our Jazz Trio, plus
some traditional favorite hymns for All Saints Day. Our
guest preacher at both the 8:00 and 10:00 services will be
Bishop Bill Burrill, the retired Episcopal Bishop of
Rochester. Afterwards, enjoy a short concert
performance of music from Desert Foothills Theaters
production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, and then enjoy lunch, featuring the Mens
Gumbo/Jambalaya Cookoff! Childrens food and
activities will be provided also, so this is a treat for the
whole family!
If you are remembering someone who has died this All Saints Day, please bring a photo or memento and put
it on our saints table in the Healing Chapel. We will say special prayers for the Faithful Departed this day.

Third Annual Joint Thanksgiving Service with Or Chadash Synagogue!
Nativity is proud once again to celebrate Thanksgiving
with our Jewish friends at Or Chadash Synagogue.
This years service will take place on Tuesday,
November 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Nativity. The service will
celebrate the theme of Light, as it marks the beginning
of Hanukkah, the Season of Light, and the beginning
of Advent, when we anticipate the Light of Christ
coming into the world. The service includes readings
and prayers from both traditions, some amazing music
by our musicians and choir, and true Thanksgiving for
our shared American traditions. Dont miss it!
The week before, on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m., please join us at Or Chadash, 9096 E. Bahia Drive in
Scottsdale, for an educational event. Pastor Susan, Deacon Wayne, Rabbi Micah, and Cantor Melissa will
share in educating us about our religious traditions including questions and answers.

Your contributions are a vital part of how our church realizes its vision of reaching
new people for Christ, nurturing our members through worship, helping our young
people and our adults grow in faith by learning about God, praying, serving and
caring for each other, and serving our community and our world through active
outreach and service. Without you, we cannot accomplish all these things.
This year, Nativity is organized into three teams: Matthew (adults up to roughly
age 45), Mark (roughly 45-65), and Luke (roughly ages 65+). Each team has its
own stewardship goals, both for number of pledges and dollar amount. Help your
team make the most progress toward its goal!
You will be receiving a stewardship mailing that includes a narrative budget, which talks about Nativitys
accomplishments for the past year and our vision for the year to come. Please pray and consider how God is
calling you to be part of this vision. We receive no support from our diocese or other outside sources all
that we do is dependent on our members. With your help, your church can make a big difference in our
community transforming lives with the love of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Kirk Smith presented the Endicott Peabody Award for Excellence in Ministry at the diocesan
convention banquet to our very own Pastor Susan! Endicott Peabody founded the first Episcopal church
in Arizona in the 1880s (in Tombstone, right after the shootout at the OK Corral). His great-grandson,
Endicott Peabody IV, is a member of Nativity and was on hand during the presentation.
This award is for all the members of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity. This has been a team
project, and we have done it together!, Pastor Susan.
Endicott Peabody Award for Excellence in Ministry was awarded to Pastor Susan during
the 2013 DIocesan Convnetion.

The eternal themes of the Scripture circulate throughout the Old and New Testaments
and our recognizing these distinct strands makes the experience of Bible reading
particularly valuable. Please join us in our 5-session walk through the Bible on
Wednesday Nights at 6:30. The first 3 sessions cover Creation (Oct 30), Exodus (Nov 6)
and Exile/Return (Nov 13). The final 2 sessions treat the New Testament themes of
Incarnation (Dec 4) and Acts & the Church (Dec 11) and will be our Annual Advent
Program offering for the new church year. Each session stands on its own so you can
join any time! Optional Evening Prayer commences at 6:00 in the Prayer Chapel.
Please bring something to contribute to the Dinner Church Salad Bar for the Meal &
program time which starts at 6:30 p.m. Registration forms will be available at class.

"Remember you are there to fuddle them." This is the pithy advice
spoken by Screwtape, a teacher of demons, to his mentee Wormwood in
a line from Letter Number 1 in C.S. Lewis' Classic fiction piece "The
Screwtape Letters." This piece of literature is a must-read for every
Christian who experiences temptations and failings. The book gives us a
context for living that lifts us out of the morass of our unconscious
thoughts. If there is one thing that stops us from experiencing love and
joy, its our own self-inflicted injury. In the book Wormwood and
Screwtape live in a peculiarly morally reversed world, where individual
benefit and greed are seen as the greatest good, similar to what we see in
society in the 21st Century. Neither demon is capable of
comprehending God's love for man or acknowledging true human virtue
when he sees it. Please do yourself a
favor and get yourself a copy of this
book and read it. You can also listen to it on YouTube simply by going to
YouTube.com and searching for "The Screwtape Letters (Narrated by John
Cleese)." Other audio versions are available on YouTube as well, but John
Cleese's reading is superb.
The Nativity Book Club will be discussing this book on November 10 over lunch
and libations at the Tavern Americana at Hayden and Thompson Peak Pkwy at
12:30 p.m. RSVP is required so we can know how much space we will need.

November is an intense and
exciting month for the music ministry!
On November 3 we will have a
joint service at 10 a.m. with All Saints
themed hymns and jazz. Our Gospel
Choir and Nativity Jazz trio will make
an appearance performing a.o. an
energizing medley of spirituals at the Offertory, and
"When All The Saints Go Marching In" for the
postlude. Don't miss out on the rare opportunity of
leaving the sanctuary dancing!
On November 11th at 4 pm. the concert of
remembrance to honor the Veterans will take place.
The writer and narrator Joyce Ditzler, the Veterans
from our parish, the Nativity Choir, mezzosoprano
Suzanne Rovani, the Nativity jazz trio, and violinist
Dagmara Sucho! Hobbs will present a program of
music, songs, and readings from World War 1 to the
present day. You will hear patriotic music, Adagio for
Strings" by S. Barber, "Revolutionary Etude" by F.
Chopin, and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to mention
a few. It is going to be an unforgettable event! Come
listen, sing with us, and bring your friends to honor
those men and women who have given so much to
keep us safe. It is a free event, but donations are
welcome.
On November 26th at 7 p.m. we will for the
third time join forces with the Congregation Or
Chadash to create an interfaith Thanksgiving worship.
This years' theme is light. Cantor Melissa and I are
planning some wonderful music for you to join and
listen - you don't want to miss out on this one!
Apart from these events you will also get to
hea our choir performing Haydn's anthem, new
energetic gospel songs, Suzanne Rovani singing solo,
Ann Phillips playing her wonderful music on Native
American flute, and many others. We can't wait to
share it with you all!
Some of you might remember that in the end
of September I participated in an international organ
competition in NY state. It was a fabulous experience
playing some of the best instruments in US, and
meeting colleagues from all over the world. As far as
the outcome of it, I advanced through three rounds
and came fourth in the end. It was a week of sharing
new ideas and listening to high level organ music
playing for all of us!

Music has been my
companion and my joy
since earliest childhood
in England. Born into a
very musical family, the
sound of singing and the
excitement of going to
concerts was ever
present. Some of my
earliest memories are of
old records of Caruso
and later the wonderful
voice of Paul Robeson,
the great bass, whose
voice could move me to
tears.
I started singing in a choir aged eight, in an
ecumenical choir which my father led for 60 years,
and have never really stopped; school, church, a
hospital choir in London, a lovely memory of
Christmas morning when all the medical students and
nurses who sang, came in early and processed through
all the Wards singing to the patients. The nurses
reversed their cloaks so the red lining showed and we
all carried candles. It was very touching to watch the
faces of the sick and suffering as they listened to those
lovely old carols.
A large London choir with which I sang had a special
mission to the prisons and visited several. It was an
extraordinary experience. We started the concerts to
noise and barracking as the prisoners were really only
there to get time out of their cells. Gradually as we
sang familiar hymns a hush would come over the
room and many times I saw tears on the faces of the
men as we told the gospel story in song.
The church without music would lose immeasurably.
The church encompasses all variations of faith as it
does music. The music of our faith is boundless. I
might prefer some music but the ability of it to move
and so enhance worship is boundless. It might be a
boy soprano singing the Allegri Misererere in an
ancient cathedral or the grandeur of a Welsh male
voice choir singing, When I survey the wondrous
Cross as I participated in a funeral for miners in the
hills of North Wales or the amazing effort of the choir
of Nativity who with faith and commitment can at
times exceed their number in the effect they have on
the service.
The choir is an example to the whole body of the
church with their faithfulness year after year. They
lead the hymns and practice special music and
anthems for the great feast days of the church. They
may disagree with each other or the leader, or not
even like some of the music but with encouragement
exhortation and occasional bullying from the choir
director and also much hilarity, they accept the reality
of diverse opinions, stick with it, and turn up. We
could do with some more enthusiastic singers from the
congregation I know you're out there!
In most churches, as in the choir, there are areas of
disagreement, and sadly this can lead to divisions and
hurt feelings. This usually happens when we start to
think we are truly the great I am" and our way or
opinion is the best rather than the One who is truly the
GREAT I AM. Just as the choir is directed to sing
for the glory of God, so I must remember that my life
in the church must be directed by the head of heavenly
choir.
At this time when we look towards the birth of our
Savior, a life of new hope and peace, let us remember
that some of the most beautiful music is often not the
loud bombastic creation which forces our attention,
but the quiet evocation of peace and worship. Let it be
so for us in all our affairs, as the old hymn says.
Drops thy still dews of quietness,
till all our strivings cease,
take from our souls the strain and stress,
and let are ordered lives confess the beauty of Thy
peace.

PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION
The women of Nativity will be volunteering at the Phoenix Rescue Mission on Tuesday,
November 5th. All interested in participating, please meet at church no later than 8:15am. We
will car pool to the Mission and generally return to the church around lunch time. All those who
would like to, will go to lunch after working hard in the kitchen .
NATIVITY WOMENS GROUP
We are planning a self guided tour of the Desert Botanical Garden
and Chihuly Exhibit on Thursday, November 14, with lunch to
follow at Gertrudes Restaurant located within the Gardens. The
weather ought to be very comfortable and the exhibit promises to
be quite lovely. Kathy Graf and Donna Hartz are assisting with
carpooling arrangements, leaving at 9:30 a.m.from the Nativity

Big Fun Bible Movie Night for November is Friday Night November 15 at 7:00. This
month's showing is "The Nativity Story" made in 2006. Filmed in Italy and Morocco
this film has the distinction of being the first ever to make its world premiere on the
stage at Vatican City. Reputed as being painstakingly researched regarding its historical
details, come and get the jump on the holiday season by firmly fixing a stunning visual
of this story of our Savior's birth firmly in mind. Hosted by David Bolger and Deacon
Wayne, you bring your favorite beverage and we supply the popcorn. Movie running
time is 1 hour and 41 minutes.

Please plan to attend the very special
events happening on November 3!
We'll be having the gumbo/jambalaya
cook-off for the grown ups and Pizza for
the kids in the Sunday School Rooms.
The children and I will be discussing the story
of Joseph and his brothers again before the wonderful performance from
our friends at Desert Foothills Theater of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat in the Sanctuary after our lunch. The performance will be child
friendly especially after our review during lunch! This will be a wonderful family
event! Please see the whole section about this event for further details.
First Sunday in Advent
We'll be doing a wonderful family Advent event on Sunday, December 1. The children will be having a visit with the
real Saint Nicholas while the parents will be meeting with me to discuss Advent traditions! Watch for more

Parents Coffee Klatch!
Thanks everyone for making this group such a success! We appreciate
all the parents contributing to our topics and supporting each other.
Thank you also also to Ali Roeschley did an inspired presentation
about "Organized Bliss!" and Andrea Connor who gave us great ideas
about how to teach our children to have healthy eating habits from the
start!
One of the activities that the Coffee Klatch has agreed to do during
November and December is to help assemble small pieces of costumes
needed for the Christmas Pageant! Watch for emails announcing the specific schedule!

Christmas Pageant Rehearsals:
This is a reminder that those upper elementary and
teen aged participants who have received speaking
parts in the pageant will need to attend rehearsals
on the following days:
Sundays: 12:30 - 2:30 (most likely in the youth
room) on 11/10, 11/17, 11/24, 12/8 and 12/15
Saturday 10:00 - noon - Dress rehearsals with
music and in the sanctuary on 12/14 and 12/21.

Greetings from Youth Ministry at Nativity!
I want to thank all of you who have supported the youth group through a few of our
fundraisers this last month. We so appreciate anything you are willing to donate to help
our Mission Trip happen next summer! It would not be possible without you, so
THANK YOU!
Office Hours: I am sure there are times throughout the week you may pop into the
church office, and I am not there. You may wonder where I am. Well, the truth is I not
only work at Nativity, but I also for the Diocese with a gentleman, Matt Marino. He
trains me and other Youth Directors in the valley on how to be effective youth ministers.
So, my time is divided between working at the church, working with Matt, and working
within the community to help further the Kingdom of God with other students. I do my
best to come into the office as much as I can, but sometimes I am volunteering at schools
to meet students where they are, supporting our youth at their different events, and having
my frequent meetings with Matt to discuss book assignments or ask questions about ministry.
It is a very busy program that I am privileged to participate in. However, I also want my church family to know
when you are able to get in touch with me in person if necessary!
Sundays: 8:30am-12:30pm 1:00pm-9:00pm
Mondays: I work from home or meet with people for
coffee/lunch. 8:30am-5:00pm
Tuesdays: In and out of the office from 9:00am-4:30pm
depending on meetings!
Wednesdays: In and out of office from 9:00am-5:30pm
depending on meetings!
Thursdays: In and out of office from 9:00am-4:30pm
(These days I am usually meeting with Matt somewhere
either in the valley or sometimes in Tucson).
Friday: Is usually my day off. However, I am frequently
attending Wyldlife Clubs, meeting with youth, attending
special events for youth, supporting our church at other
events, or doing miscellaneous tasks throughout the day.
If you ever need to meet with me or connect with me at
all, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would love to
make time!

Womens Bible Study: The last couple weeks of October,
Liz Sambach and myself began leading a womens Bible
study. We are learning how to be Beloved Disciples with a
Beth Moore Bible study. This study is through the Gospel
of John. It is a great opportunity for fellowship, love, and
laughter! If you are interested in being a part of this study
please contact me, we would love to have you!

On October 17th Shelley Byrnes, Julie Bogle, and
Lani Sanbach went to Pinnacle Peak Elementary
School's Harvest Festival. We had the opportunity
to have a booth set up with information about our
church, after school programs, and mingle with new people. We also passed out some our personalized
Church of the Nativity bags, and water bottles with Nativity labels on them! It was a great evening.

Christmas Pageant: We are beginning pageant rehearsals this month. There are
still plenty of spots available in the pageant if you are interested in participating.
We will be having rehearsals on Sundays from 12:30pm-2:30pm and beginning
the second week of December we will begin having rehearsals on Saturdays as
well. If this is something you are interested in being involved with please

Confirmation: Thank you to everyone who came to our
Confirmation Retreat on October 26th. We had so much fun and
learned a lot about what we believe. Our next Confirmation class
