8.0 What is Email or electronic mail?

• Email is the transmission of messages over communication networks.


• To use email, you must have access to a computer that is linked to the outside world via a
modem, phone line, or fiber optic cable to the public network (the Internet) connected to ISP.
• Email messages are sent over the Internet and are stored in electronic mailbox servers for the
recipient to retrieve them.

8.1 What is Yahoo! Mail?


• Yahoo! Mail is a web-based e-mail provider, also called Internet mail.
• With Yahoo! Mail, you can send and receive messages from any computer connected to the
Internet including workstations from your home, college or at the local Public Library.

8.2 How to Sign Up


• Open your favorite browser and type http://www.yahoo.com/ in the address box

• On the left-hand side of the web page, you have links to most things Yahoo thinks are of most
interest to web users, as shown in the figure:

• In this module, we’re interested only on Yahoo Mail. There are three links option that you
can use to access your email.

1. Sign in: use this link if you already have YahooID to check your emails
2. Sign Up: use this if you are new to Yahoo Mail
3. Mail: Does the same thing as 1 & 2
