or get involved, you don’t just come in, put a Mexican

what do you think that in the whole Soul Assassins
family and that whole scene is there any charity work
going on? Maybe enlighten some of our readers as to
what you guys are doing, giving back.
EO: Yeah, me and Cartoon do these outreaches with
at-risk teens or kids that go to probation schools, or if
we’re doing an event with Nike or Peterson Automotive
Museum where we have something set up, we’ll have
them furnish some type of transportation and then we
bring the kids from the schools and walk them through
the museum and show them the art exhibition and then
we talk to them a little bit afterwards and tell them you
know, they too have the opportunity to do what we do.

Now it’s even easier cause we opened the door for

them and if they want to design a Nike shoe they can,
we’re showing them that it’s possible. Or if they wanna
do an exhibition at a museum, everything is possible
and we’re there to show them, give them hope be-
cause most people don’t even believe that we’re doing
it and we’re showing them. We’re like Here, we’re in
the museum. I’m a photographer and they’re saying,
“What did you do in the whole exhibition?”

Being that I’m a photographer, I took all the pictures on

the wall. They’re like Oh, that’s great, golly jeepers, I
would have never known. Still after everything, we still
gotta show them and explain to them.

E.S. Day: Still getting stereotyped, I bet.

EO: Yeah, they see us and they start ducking, they
think we’re gonna do a drive-by on them. And here we
are running companies and stuff like that. (laughs

don’t really think white people have the moral authority to sit down and
jump on someone who’s Peruvian and Black and tell him what language
they can and can’t use to define their own people. My people were enslaved,
and we took the worst part of what was thrown at us and made it good.
You get slave food, we made it into soul food. We every single aspect of
negativity that was hurled at us and we made it positive. And while that
particular word, people will never agree with, and I know some people in
their mind will never see it as a positive...I don’t see it as a positive word,
it’s just the slang that came to signify comradery, and I look at that with a
duality because, one day I’d like to take that word out of my vocabulary as
well. I don’t refer to women as hos, I don’t look at women as sex objects...
in “Reverse Pimpology” I went into that. First it was talking about women
and their relationships with men, and how we think that we’re pimping the
situation, then we realize where did we get our impression of what women
are ? From our relationships with women when we were little. If we have
difficulty settling down with one woman and we’re out there playing, could
it be because someone played your mother like that? I mean this is real talk.
I think this is just a process that has to occur in every aartist. I mean I think if
anybody dy in Vancouver is mad at me for something like that, especially when
it was in one son
song like “Obnoxious”...it’s very important for uus to realize
that Hip Hop getting more and

art of Hip Hop than other people I’ve seen. In other words it’s not just MC’s
being shouted out, it’s also the graffiti writers, the DJ’s, the B-Boys. I mean
that’s still a part of it out there, and it’s a shame that out here, you know
we’ve kinda strayed away from that vein.

GZA/Genius
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008
Richards on Richards, Vancouver BC
A distinctly more mature, less blinged out crowd packed the venue early in anticipation of GZA’s performance
of the classic “Liquid Swords” album in its entirety. In response to the opening DJ’s set the crowd mercilessly
booed him offstage. He proceeded to get revenge by throwing on an awful disc of electro-house mashups,
culminating in - believe it or not - Soulja Boy, flying in the face of GZA’s recent YouTube beef. Thankfully the
soundtrack was switched to classic Wu Tang just in time to quell the impending riot.
As the room filled with clouds of dry ice, GZA’s DJ threw on the opening strains of “Liquid Swords”, and as
the kung-fu flick narrative led into “Duel of the Iron Mic”, the crowd was lost in its admiration of one of the
greatest Hip Hop lyricists of all time. His delivery was steady and understated, and it took him some time to
warm up, relying on the crowd for at least half of the lines in “Living in the World Today” and “Gold”, but by
the time he hit the opening bars of “Cold World”, he had clearly cut his stride, exhibiting a swagger and confi-
dent ease.
While he occasionally stumbled on lines from this now thirteen year old album, it was the brilliance of his
lyrics and his distinctive voice that allowed him to hold the crowd in his palm. The unseen presence of ODB
entered the room as he blazed through “I Like it Raw”, followed by a selection of tracks from the Wu Tang
catalog and his own solo efforts. For an encore, the incendiary 50 Cent diss of “Paper Plate”, raised the hair on
the audience’s neck.
Representing for the Wu Tang
Clan accompanied only by a DJ,
GZA brought his gift for cinemat-
ic lyricism and unique voice to an
audience hungry for real MCing,
and the presence of the Wu was
truly felt.
