Hip-hop Dance
PART TWO

1. What is a Hip-hop dance?

-Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles
primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have
evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a
wide range of styles primarily breaking which was
created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews
in the United States.

2. Brief history about hip-hop dance

-Hip-hop began in the early 1970s when DJs and MCs
began to experiment and produce music composed of
poetry over instrumental tracks or dubbed versions
of music records. One of the very first DJs/MCs was
DJ Kool Herc, a native of Kingston, Jamaica who
brought this form of music to Bronx, N.Y.
3.Kinds, style, or types of hip-hop dance
-Breaking was created in the South Bronx, New York City
during the early 1970s.[3] It is the first hip-hop dance
style. At the time of its creation, it was the only hip-
hop dance style because Afrika Bambaataa classified it as
one of the five pillars of hip-hop culture along
with MCing (rapping), DJing (turntablism), graffiti
writing (bombing), and knowledge.
-Locking originally called Campbellocking, was created in
1969 in Los Angeles, California by Don "Campbellock"
Campbell and popularized by his crew The Lockers.
-Popping was derived from the earlier Boogaloo street
dance movement taking place in Oakland, California during
the late 1960's, the Boogaloo dance form incorporated
techniques of soulful footwork steps, arm movements, stop-
motion animation, the robot, & posing hard - which
contracted muscles during robotic poses to the music of
Funk.
-Turfing an acronym for Taking Up Room on the Floor, was
created in 2002 by Jeriel Bey in Oakland,
California.Turfing is a fusion of miming and gliding that
places heavy emphasis on storytelling (through movement)
and illusion.

4.Steps of hip-hop dance

-the prep
-the cabbage patch
-the running man
-the humpty dance
-the butterfly
5. Costume used in Hip-hop dance
-Today's hip hop dancers still
have the typical wears of
baggy pants,
low waist jeans, fat shirt,
jackets, and heavy metal
necklaces and bracelets. But there
are some small changes, too.
You can see male hip hop dancers
wear hooded jackets with the hoods
on and also caps outside the hoods.
6.Known hip-hop dancers all over the world
-Wade Robson rocks the under-30 scene when it comes to hip hop
dance. Originally from Australia, Wade moved to the United
States with his family when he was nine to pursue his dreams
of entertaining. He hit achievements some only dream of before
he was even in high school, including a teaching job at the
age of 12 and the chance to choreograph for world famous
singer Britney Spears when he was only 16. He went on to
choreograph Britney's tour performances, her HBO special, and
some of her most famous videos. He has also choreographed for
boy band N'SYNC. In 2007, Wade Robson won an Emmy award for
his choreography on the ever-popular TV show So You Think You
Can Dance.
-Flava Dance Troop appeared on Britain's Got Talent, met at
first glance by skepticism from the judges, but were wildly
loved by the crowd from the very first moment. Flava's
style is a good example of a hip hop group performing onstage,
with choreographed numbers, but implementing some of the
tricks and surprises into the routine that might normally be
seen in street hip hop competitions. Though most street hip
hop is not choreographed, Flava's choreographed routines still
exude a distinctly authentic flavor.

7.Known hip-hop dancers from the Philippines

-Philippine All-Stars: Winners of the 2008 Hip Hop
Championships, the Philippine All-Stars group has a flawless
way of performing as a hip hop group. This is one of the
difficult aspects of being in a hip hop group, as compared
to individual hip hop dancers, and this group pulls it off
very well. Their semi-final routine at the championships
received a five-star rating on YouTube, and their routine in
the final won them first place in the competition. They also
won the competition in 2006, making for an impressive track
record for a group that was only founded in 2005. Their goal
is to elevate the status of dancing in the Philippines; the
current situation, in which dancers are considered second-
rate performance artists, is something this group hopes to
help change.
