Abstract: Hazrat Raza Barelvi played a historical role in promotion of Urdu naat (poetry
in praise of the Prophet Muhammad). With his high level of knowledge, he not only
utilized his expertise on the Quran and Hadith in naat but also used the terminologies of
Logic, Mathematics, Astronomy, Astrology and Metaphysics. If his poetry is analyzed
from the artistic aspects and attributes, many examples of his expertise on different
branches of knowledge, poetic ability and powerful writing can be found in his poetry.
The spirit of his poetic qualities and attributes remains his eminent love of the Prophet
(peace and mercy upon him), which is prominent in his naats. However, his poetry
remains within the boundaries defined by Sharia. He lead a unique school of naatia poetry.
