I
n The Secret Language of Animals, biologist Janine
Benyus takes us inside the animal kingdom and shows
us the whys and the hows behind the distinctive behavior
of creatures great and small in their natural environments.
Divided geographically into ve sectionsAfrica, Asia,
North America, the oceans, and the polesthe book
examines and describes the behavior, body language, and
patterns of communication of 20 different animals: the
gorilla, lion, African elephant, plains zebra, black rhinoceros,
giraffe, ostrich, greater famingo, Nile crocodile, giant
panda, peacock, Komodo monitor, bottlenose dolphin,
California sea lion, gray wolf, bald eagle, sandhill crane,
beluga whale, polar bear, and Adlie penguin.
For each animal, Benyus describes and explains
basic behaviors (locomotion, feeding, drinking, bathing,
grooming, sleeping), communication behavior (greeting,
social play, group defense, conict, aggression/submission,
ghting, courtship, copulation), and parenting behavior
(birth, care and feeding, teaching, communal care).
The book is illustrated throughout with tender yet
precise line drawings that beckon us to the animals and
vividly capture everything from changing facial expressions
to nurturing postures to playful and aggressive interactions.
The text, too, is both intimate and informative, allowing for
a deep connection with, and a great admiration for, each
one of the animals.

e transported to New York during the Gilded Age and
experience daily life in one of the worlds most vibrant
cities through mesmerizing, contemporary 3D photography
and exciting tales of the time.
Black Dog & Leventhal has partnered with the New-
York Historical Society to present New York in the Gilded
Age as its never been viewed before. This innovative
package includes a sturdy metal stereoscopic viewer and
50 stereoscopic photographs of turn-of-the-century New
York. The package also includes a 128-page paperback that
provides a brief history of the stereograph craze and an
overview of the citys evolution during that time.
New York City in 3D in the Gilded Age details the rapid
growth of Manhattan from 1877 to 1910, when nearly half
of the millionaires in America lived in the city. Enduring
structures such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge,
Grand Central Station, Ellis Island Immigration Station, and
the rst skyscrapers were built during this time, culminating
in the construction of the 47-story Singer Building in 1908.
The 50 stereoscopic images include Coney Island lit up at
night; a view of Madison Square Garden in 1900 from the top
of the Flatiron Building; peddlers carts on Elizabeth Street
in 1904; the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1880; the
Ellis Island dining room in 1907; and Times Square with the
new Astor Hotel in 1908.
Detailed descriptions of the scenes depicted in each
stereographic photograph are included on the back of the photo.
The New-York Historical Society, one of Americas pre-eminent

Illustrated by Frances W. Zweifel
Volume Two in Black Dogs best-selling Simple
Science Experiments collection, 365 More Simple
Science Experiments with Everyday Materials has a
fresh new look at a great new price.
W
ith 365 More Simple Science Experiments, kids ages
9 through 12 get a years worth of fun and educational
hands-on experiments while gaining knowledge of the
fundamentals of scienceincluding concepts such as gravity,
electricity, magnication, magnetism, oxidation, and morethat
will last a lifetime.
The hundreds of experiments are divided into 32 chapters,
the rst seven of which focus on experiments that demonstrate
basic principles of physics using materials in the natural world. In
the next eight chapters kids learn about science using common
foods, discovering the answers to such questions as Why do
we cry when peeling an onion? and Is a raw carrot healthier
than a cooked one? The next seven chapters tackle concepts
having to do with time and space, and the following seven
explain some puzzling ideas about nature. The nal chapters
explore the science of outer space.
Most of the experiments are easy enough for kids to execute
on their own, though a few may require the aid of a parent or
partner. Kids will learn how to make vinegar, milk a potato,
catch sound, stick a pin in a balloon without popping it,
and make 1 + 1 not equal 2.
This book is perfect for kids who like to explore the natural
world or are looking for something fun and inexpensive to create
for a science fair.
E. Richard Churchill, Louis V. Loeschnig, and Muriel Mandell are
