Lady Ramblers look to compete
and challenge in tough LMC

BOYNE CITY -- The Lady Ramblers will look to build upon the
foundations that have been put in
place over the last couple of seasons and compete for a Lake
Michigan Conference title.
Weve got a good mix of juniors and seniors, with a lot of
parts and pieces, Rambler coach
Kevin Fitzpatrick said. The girls
are working hard and we feel we
enough parts to be competitive.
Returning for Boyne this season is Rainy McCune, Jenny
Selissen, Taylor Baker, Mallory
Karaszewski, Heather Nichols
and Courtney Weldon.
The Rambler program has seen
increased numbers at all levels of
play and will once again have JV
and freshmen teams will good
numbers.
Fitzpatrick knows the pre-holi-
day stretch will help determine

what the team needs to work on
going forward.
We need to play hard for the
next couple of weeks and see
what happens, the coach said. I
think the league will be competitive, there will be no off nights
for anyone.
Boyne will look to play at a uptempo pace while rotating players in and out on a regular basis,
and applying some pressure defense.
There is a good mix of post
and perimeter players, he noted.
Weve had a slow start with the
success of the volleyball program
and drama, but we like where
we're headed.
The Ramblers will open with a
couple of non-conference games
against Gaylord St. Mary and
Suttons Bay before they meet up
with Cedarville and Pine River.

Loggers looking to hang first
Conference banner this season

BOYNE FALLS -- The Lady Loggers come off a successful 2012-13

season that saw them challenge for
the Northern Lakes Conference title,
only to be edged out by Mackinaw
City.
This season, with a cast of returning veterans, we look for the Loggers
to be near the very top once again
and possibly earn their first league
title.
Boyne Falls returns leading scorer,
senior Emily Matelski, who led them
at a 17 plus points per game clip,
while also dishing out nearly seven
assists, grabbing over six boards and
four steals per contest.
Another top returnee is junior
Reagan Pedigo. In her sophomore
season, Reagan nearly averaged a
double-double, dropping 12 ppg, and
9.7 rebounds, while blocking 2.4 shots
per game and according to coach
Lyndel Sage, she has improved her
game during the offseason and looks
to be an even bigger threat for the

Loggers on both ends of the court.
Senior Calsey Matelski also returns and bring with her a 10 point,
eight rebound average from last year,
and will look to give the Loggers a
third scoring option and on any
given night can lead the team in any
category.
We have a good combination of
high and low players this season,
coach Sage said. Itll be hard for the
defenses to key on just one player
this year.
The Logger supporting cast of
Kathryn Miller, Kendra Berreth,
Kurstin Wilson, Char Bearss and
Hailey Matelski will all be counted
on to contribute as well.
Weve got pretty good numbers
this year for our varsity team, Sage
said, We're not quite where we want
to be headed into the season opener
from a conditioning standpoint, but
well get there and look to compete
for a league championship.

second-year coach Liz Shaw
two starters back as Charlevoix looks to improve on 5-16 mark

CHARLEVOIX The axiom

holds that a team makes its
largest strides between its season-opener and its second game.
The same may also be said of a
program.
Liz Shaw enters her second
year at the helm of the
Charlevoix High School girls basketball team, and the Rayders appear poised to improve on
several fronts after a 5-16 finish
in 2012-13.
I just feel like were leaps and
bounds ahead of where we were
starting last year, said Shaw,
who has more than 15 years of
varsity coaching experience
under her belt in basketball, volleyball and softball. We need to
continue to develop our abilities
into opportunities. I think thats
going to come. There really is
tremendous potential. They
work really hard in practice
every day, and so many good
things can happen with that attitude and that atmosphere. I
think we can move from the back
of the back (in the Lake Michigan Conference) to the top of the
pack.
The Rayders have a solid foundation on which to build in returning starters Gabby Gray and
center Madeline Boss. Gray is
the point guard, while Boss led
the Rayders in both scoring (12.4
points per game) and rebounding
a year ago, when Charlevoix
started 3-2 but lost 10 of its final
11 games and finished tied for
sixth (4-10) in the league.
Boss, a junior, may be one of
the areas top players. Her size
makes her a threat in the post,
but she is also among the quickest players and top outside
shooters on Shaws roster.
Her weapons are multi-dimensional, Shaw said. She can
shoot the 3. We should get scoring from a number of players.
We can look up for a lot of different people to step up in that
(scoring) category. Thats exciting for our team.
Senior guard Maggie Hamilton
also returns as do juniors Kourtney Putman and Elizabeth Way,

contribute. Jacie LaBlance, a
senior who hasnt played in the
program since her freshman season, rounds out the roster.
While Boss and Gray are
proven commodities, the remainder of the starting lineup and
playing rotation will work itself
out as Charlevoix makes its way
through the season. The Rayders

open on Monday, Dec. 9, with a
non-league game at Bellaire,
then take on Gaylord the following night in their home opener.
The conference opener is Dec. 17
at home against Elk Rapids.
Overall, Shaw said, she expects to put a team on the floor
that is much improved over last

season, when several of her current players experienced the inevitable growing pains of a
young team.
Theyre smarter, theyre
stronger and they can make better decisions, she said. And
weve got good chemistry.

Lady Red Devils taking on a
new look this year

EAST JORDAN -- The Lady

Red Devils will take on a new
look this season as they only return one starter from a year ago.
The lone returnee is senior
Paige Poindexter, as she finished
second on the team in scoring
with over eight points per game
and was the team's leading rebounder at over seven per night.
We have decent size and this
is a smart group of players, veteran coach Steve Hines said.
Everyone seems to have different strengths and great attitudes,
so it should be an interesting season. I think the league will be
more competitive this year and
were looking forward to a good
season.
Also back for the Red Devils
are Holly Carson who will be out
of action until after the Christmas break due to injury.
We will be inexpierenced, but

appear to have a little more
depth, Hines said. This will be
the first time in four years that
we will have someone other than
Val Peters at the point, which
will be different.
Juniors Tiffany Pollaski and
Kayla Keane are expected to be
providing the minutes at the
point, while Tori Goodrich has
earned a starting spot and has really stepped up her game according to Hines.
Ellen Brandell looks to give another season of strong play in the
post, while junior Lindsay
Schroeder will put her hard work
ethic to any challenge that presents itself.
Grace Robbins, Collette Tuck,
Tess McNitt, Miranda Burks
along with foreign exchange student Michelle Tshmaje round out
the roster.

the Lady Lancers and knows the
team has some big shoes to fill
with the graduation of two of the
Northern Lakes Conference premier players in Kari Steenwyk
and Tara Essenberg, but knows
the team is up for the challenge.
Coach Stevens knows the team
is working hard towards their
goals of playing more aggressive
this year and is working hard at a
man-to-man defense and full
court pressure.
Were hoping to do compete
and do well in the conference,
Stevens noted. We have good
leaders but overall have limited
varsity experience.
