Design and production: Sara Glaser ISBN 0-943376-55-6 Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 92-085030 PREFACE 8 The Blumenthal Rare Book and Manuscript Library houses one of the most significant collections of Indian Judaica in the United States. It includes books, manuscripts, thirteen ketubbot, letters, periodicals, diaries, miscellaneous documents, and paper ephemera. The Jewish community in India has had a rich tradition, with settle- ments recorded as early as 1000 C.E. It is extremely important that this fascinating history be documented, since most of the community has migrated to the State of Israel. An important part of the fabric of Indian Jewish life are the books printed in India by and for Jews. This bibliography is a record of these works preserved in the Blumenthal Library. We hope that this catalog will make our collection more accessible to scholars and to the general public. We intend to continue this project by publishing a second volume, which will list all of our Indian manuscripts. Our thanks go to Ben Ailes for his fine photography, to Sara Glaser for her design and assistance with the publication, to the Sidney Stern Memo- rial Trust and the Helzel Publication Fund for their valuable assistance with this project, and especially to Fred Astren for his diligence and scholarship.
