WHAT'S GOING ON IN AND AROUND BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS

Hoops Round-up
A trio of former North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies has powered the Virginia State Lady Trojans to the top of the women's CIAA North Division race and into the national rankings. Six-foot senior forward Lamesha Deal, 5-5 junior point guard Jessica Lyons and 6-foot junior forward Tiffanie Adair, who once plied their trade for the Lady Aggies of the MidEastern Athletic Conference, have been catalysts behind the Lady Trojans 19-1 start, including a 5-0 mark that tops the CIAA North and a No. 14 national ranking in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 poll. Seventh-year VSU head coach James Hill, Jr., calls the trio his "Aggie Connection" and he has ridden their play to a nine-game win streak. Their only loss all season long is a 6964 decision at perennial CIAA power Shaw in early January (1/6). Deal, who transferred after her freshman season at A&T, has established herself as a force in the league. She was the CIAA's defensive player of the year in the 2012-13 season and was named to the all-CIAA team. This season, the Norfolk, Va. native is leading the Lady Trojans while placing in the top ten in six CIAA statistical categories; Scoring (14.8 points, 5th), Rebounding (8.5 pg., 5th), Field Goal Percentage (46.0%, 9th), Free Throw Percentage (83.9%, 3rd), Steals (2.1 pg., 6th) and Blocks (1.1 pg., 8th). Adair and Lyons came over this year after playing their first two seasons as part-time starters at A&T and have quickly made their presence felt. Adair, a Spartanburg, S.C. native, is just behind Deal on the VSU ledger at 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. She tops the league shooting a sizzling 71.4% from the field. Lyons, out of Upper Marlboro, Md., is the league's top free throw shooter at 89.9% who also scores 9.2 points and hands out 3.6 assists per ballgame. VSU has three division battles this week at Elizabeth City State Saturday, Monday at Chowan and Wednesday at Bowie State. One other former Lady Aggie is having a dramatic impact in the CIAA. Five-seven Fayetteville State senior guard Amber Calvin is a former MEAC all-rookie team member, who as a freshman lead the Lady Aggies to two wins and a scintillating run through the 2010 WNIT. She fought back from a serious knee injury that wiped out her second season to be a consistent scorer and fan favorite through her three

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) Grambling playing and coaching legend Doug Williams is coming back to the NFL's Washington Redskins to work in the front office. The Redskins announced Monday that the quarterback who led the team to the Super Bowl championship in the 1987 season will serve as a personnel executive. Williams Williams, 58, quarterbacked the Redskins from 1986-89 and has worked in the front office with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including one season as director of pro personnel in 2009. He rejoins the franchise to work for General Manager Bruce Allen and joins a front-office mix that also includes Morocco Brown, the teams director of pro personnel, and Scott Campbell, its director of player personnel. Williams previously worked for Allen with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Its great to be home again," Williams said in a written statement released by the team. "It also is great to be affiliated with a GM and coach who are so focused and dedicated to winning. I have only one mission: to help this team obtain the talent it needs so the fans can experience the Super Bowl they deserve." After a legendary playing career, Williams has also had two stints coaching his alma mater,. He was fired last year two games into the season despite a 61-34 record at the school. Williams' dismissal upset the players, and they refused to travel to Jackson State for a game later in the season after another coaching change.

DOUG WILLIAMS BACK IN NFL:

years at A&T. Playing this year for Eva Patterson-Heath's South Division leading Lady Broncos (16-5, 9-3 CIAA, 5-1 N), Calvin is second in the league in scoring (15.4 ppg.) while shooting 83.7% from the line (4th) and dishing out 3.2 assists per game (9th). Calvin, a Fayetteville, N.C. native, is also in the top ten in 3-point percentage (28.8%, 8th) and steals (2.0, 7th).

Despite the loss of the talented quartet now playing in the CIAA, second-year North Carolina A&T head coach Tarrell Robinson has kept the Lady Aggies in the hunt in the MEAC. Headed into the final month of regular season play, the Lady Aggies (18-4, 8-2 MEAC) are battling with Coppin State (9-2) for second place behind three-time defending champion Hampton, who is undefeated (11-0) in conference play. Robinson's squad features six players averaging between 8 and 13 points per game led by 5-10 senior forward Tracey King's 13.5 points per game. Six-three sophomore Eboni Ross is the league's top shooter from the field (52.1%) while 5-8 sophomore point guard Christina Carter leads the league in assists (5.1 apg.). A&T's only blemishes in MEAC play are a 55-51 decision at Florida A&M and a 59-50 loss at home to Coppin State on Feb. 1. They avenged the FAMU loss with a 82-77 win at home Saturday. They'll get a shot at Hampton to close out the regular season on March 6.

Lady Aggies in the MEAC

Head coach David Six's Hampton Lady Pirates (20-4, 11-0 MEAC) extended their MEAC win streak to 41 games with a 54-35 decision over Maryland-Eastern Shore Monday. While Six has been able to rely on the leadership and steady play of seniors Alyssa Bennett (16.9 ppg., 8.9 rpg.) and Nicole Hamilton (13.9 ppg., 5.7 rpg., 5.0 assists per game), his team's fortunes have been bolstered by the inside play of sophomore Brielle Ward (8.8 rpg.) and the scoring of firstyear sensation Malia Tate-DeFreitas. The 5-8 freshwoman, a prolific scorer during a storied four-year high school career in Harrisburg, Pa., is scoring a team best 18.6 points per game, fourth in the MEAC.
