I am Legend tells a story about a man (Neville) who survived a worldwide pandemic, which turned its victims into

vampire lik e creatures, Most of the story describes how he survives and protects himself from the vampires, until one day he discovers he might not be the last man alive. Its later reveal that Robert Neville is in fact the last human alive, the virus evolved to a point where vampires where now able maintaineven in the daylight. They see Robert Neville as the enemy, by day eh walked the streets killing vampire as they were in their sleep, and soon become a presence they feared. Neville finds a woman who later turns out to be a vampire, they brings her home and question weather shes infected or not, d enying all accusation, he leaves her a lone, When he wakes, Neville discovers a note from Ruth confessing that she is actually infected and that Neville was responsible for her husband' s death. Ruth admits that she was sent to spy on him. The infected have slowly overcome their disease until they can spend short periods of time in sunlight, and are attempting to build a new society. They have developed medication which helps them to overcome the most severe symptoms of the infection. Ruth warns Neville that her people will attempt to capture him, and that he should leave his house and escape to the mountains. Neville cannot bring himself to leave his house, however, and assumes that he will be captured and treated fairly by the new society. Infected members of the new society eventually attack the house. During the attack, the members of the new society violently dispatch the other vampires outside the house, and Nev ille becomes alarmed at the grim enjoyment they appear to take from this task. Realising that the intention of the attackers may be to kill him rather than to capture him he tries to defend himself with a pistol, leading to one of the infected shooting and badly injuring him. Neville wakes in a barred cell where he is visited by Ruth, who informs him that she is a ranking member of the new society b ut, unlike the others, does not resent him. Ruth attempts to present a facade of indifference to Neville, but is unable to maintain it during her discussion with him. After discussing the effect s of Neville's vampire killing activities on the new society, she acknowledges the need for Neville's execution and gives him pills, claiming they will "make it easier". Badly injured, Nevill e accepts his fate and asks Ruth not to let this society become heartless. Ruth kisses him and leaves. Neville goes to his prison window and sees the infected waiting for his execution. He now sees that the infected view him wit h the same hatred and fear that he once felt for the vampires; he realizes that he, a remnant of old humanity, is now a legend to the new race born of the infection. He recognises that their desire to kill him is not something he can condemn. As the pills take effect, he thinks: "[I am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend."

Initially I wanted to set my adaptation in a Retro future world. recreate the whole story of I am Legend whilst keeping the same theme, It would have been an action adventure game paying homage to 70s action hero films

Before jumping into designing the main character, I had a look at other adaptions of the book on the big Screen, looking at hoe each characters differ from the other,

My adaption was going to be set in the future 20 years from now, so I wanted to picture what things might look like, I initially wanted a retro feel to my work, but as I researched on how environmental space and building have evolved over the years, I realised the future would always have hints of the past, as my adaptation takes place 20 years in the future, Few thumbnails and reference images where enough to give me a good idea for what the world would look like.

20 years from now may not be that far, which fashion always changing.I decided to look back so I could get an idea of what my character could possibly be wearing.

These were the first colour comps I did for my character at this point no style was set, I research some clothing and came up with this I also looked a blade runner for a similar colour palette for Robert Neville

I still needed to pick a style, as Robert Neville is just an ordinary man the how unique the design was would make or break the character, I terms of 3D Ive always had the cell shaded look in mind when it came to 3D models. I decided to go for more cartoony approach in the sense of the way this are drawn, exaggerating all the right places and in terms of tone,,,,at this point Im thinking comedy.

I found it easier to round up a group of actors I felt could take on the role of Robert Neville so I could redraw them, this would give me a sense of their character and posture, to kick-start my design process

I started doodling, and getting actors faces down, at this point all I was really looking for was a nice guy, not the typical action hero type person but a nice guy who looks like they can handle themselves, For this reason I was drawn to Ben Stiller, specifically as Walter Mitty. He goes through an evolution, he changes as the story progresses and he is the typical quiet guy in the office but, he also looks like he can handle himself

I looked at a few caricature artist and felt that this would be a good way to loosing up my drawings, so I picked my top three face and worked on them, on the right of the image are simply clothing thumbnailsagain Im still trying to figure my characters attire.

After the caricature stage I was left with nothing really resolved but with a lot of things piled on top of each other, because I wanted that caricature style but also keeping in mind I wanted an edgy feel to the design. So I decided to slow down a bit an rethink my strategy, at the point I had already hit a wall, and It felt like I was forcing concepts out, my character had an expressive face but I didnt know how start with his body, so I stripped a lot back and went with a comedic theme, starting to draw simple shapes whole bodies, so the essence of the character remains fresh in my head

At this point, I decided on going 100% comedy, I went back to James Stewart, did a few doodles, I like his posture and his presence but I was quiet sure I liked the way his face came out.

I still didnt like James Stewarts face, but I took the essence of his shape to form these silhouettes, the type of guy my Robert Neville is, is a awkward scared person, he isnt your typical hero. I also thought of having two versions of him, one before the pandemic and another one after, just to show hes changed, but I felt this would add another layer of complexity, AND HAVING THIS UNASSUMING HERO RUNNING AROUND WOULD ACTUALLY BE A LOT FUNNIER.

I DID A FEW DOODLES ON Ben Stiller again, just to get an essence of his facial structure again, I mixed that with the body type of inspired by James Stewart and it seem as though it actually blended well together

So my Robert Neville is funny to watch, he not a bruiser and hes not strong at all, hes tall and clumsy, I took some inspiration from All-Star Supermans Clark Kent, hes a nice guy but no hero.
