TOLEDO 3/8/14The tone was set from the very first possession in the Division II Boys District Final matchup between the Wauseon Indians and the Defiance Bulldogs. Bulldog senior Will Batt drilled a three with less than 30 seconds off the clock, and that would be the story of the night. The Indian defense would be unable to slow down the three point barrage by Defiance, and would be defeated by a score of 56-42. Although they fell to an early 3-0 deficit, the Tribe was able to regain their composure, and battle with the Bulldogs for the early part of the contest. Wauseon was able to come within a 5-4 margin, but then Batt his second three point shot of the opening quarter, putting Defiance back up by four. But the Indians would answer right back, as Jacob Newlove launched a tre of his own that landed, making it 8-7 in favor of the Bulldogs with 3:55 left in the opening period. Trey Guilliam then hit two consecutive threes of his own, the second of which gave Defiance a 14-9 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter of action. Wauseons defense was able to hold off anymore scoring from Defiance for the rest of the first quarter, and the Indians capitalize, scoring the last four points of the half as Corry Byers and Newlove each respectively put down layups to make it 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, with Defiance in the lead. The Tribe took their first lead of the contest at the 7:43 mark of the second stanza, as Corry Byers would hit, you guessed it, a three pointer, putting Wauseon in control 16-14. Defiance sunk a pair of free throws to tie the game up, and it would remain tied until the 4:36 remaining in the half when Byers converted two free throws, and it was Wauseon with an 18-16 lead midway through the second quarter. It wasnt long, however, until the Bulldog shooters would again come alive, making four straight three pointers to give them eight total threes in the first half, and a 28-18 lead. The Tribe was able to end the half on a high note however, when Newlove hit his second triple of the contest to cut the Bulldog lead to seven, 28-21 which would remain the score in to the intermission.

The Tribe hoped to slow down the three point attack of the Bulldogs in the second half of action, but Defiance had other plans as they would yet again put down two more shots from behind the arc, one at the 7:30 mark, and the other at the 5:05 mark. At this point, the Bulldogs had made seven straight three pointers rom the 4:03 mark of the second quarter through the 5:05 mark of the third, outscoring Wauseon 21-3 in that span, and increasing their lead to 34-21 over the red and white. At the end of the third quarter, Defiance held a 43-32 lead over Wauseon. The fourth and final quarter of play, and of the season for the Tribe, would go without a score until Noah Castle drove to the basket, while getting fouled, and converting an old fashioned three point play to draw Wauseon within eight, 43-35, but that would be the closest the Indians would be able to get. Defiance slowed the game down, deflating both the basketball and the Indians chances of a comeback. Any score that the Tribe made, the Bulldogs were able to answer, and as the final buzzer rang on the Indians 2013-2014 campaign, the scoreboard read 56-42 in favor of the Defiance Bulldogs. The Indians finished the season with a 19-7 record, and the Wauseon High School trophy case will be home to a district runner-up trophy. On the season, Wauseon averaged 54.6 points per game, while giving up an average of only 43 points per game. Wauseon will lose seniors Kris Boysel, Corry Byers, and Alec Lillich to graduation, but return three starters (Noah Castle, Zac Robinson, and Jacob Newlove) along with Zach Johnson who saw considerable playing time throughout the year. In the contest with the Bulldogs, Castle and Byers both set the pace with 12 points a piece. Newlove contributed eight to the Indian cause, Johnson had six, and Mason Creager finished with two. Congrats to the Indians on a great season, and congratulations also go out to their seniors on fine careers. SCORING BY QUARTER: Wauseon: 13, 8, 11, 10 for 42 Defiance: 14, 14, 15, 13 for 56

TAKING THE BALL TO THE HOOP ... Jacob Newlove drives to the basket against Defiance Saturday during the District championship game.

TOLEDO 3/5/2014The Wauseon Indians are riding a tournament hot streak that started against Napoleon, continued against Bryan, and rolled on through against the Scott Bulldogs, as the Tribe took down the Bulldogs 57-55, advancing to the district finals. Wauseon controlled the tip off, but the night started off shaky for the Tribe as Scotts Chris Darrington stole a pass away, and took the ball the length of the court, throwing down a slam dunk, and giving Scott an early 2-0 lead. This started a 7-2 Bulldog run, and the Tribe was down five after three minutes of play. Wauseon Head Coach Chad Burt called a timeout, attempting to regroup his team, and it worked. The Indians first field goal of the contest came at the the 4:54 mark of the opening quarter of action, as junior Zac Robinson drained a three pointer, drawing the Indians within two, 7-5. Kris Boysel followed with a pair of free throws, two of the six free throws he would make in the quarter, tying the contest up at seven a piece with 3:47 remaining in the period. Scotts offense picked the pace back up in the final three minutes of the opening quarter, pushing their lead to 18-13. That was until Robinson lined up and nailed his second three pointer of the night right before the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, brining Wauseon within two. As the first quarter drew to a close, Scott held an 18-16 lead over Wauseon. Boysel opened the second quarter with a strong drive to the basket, tying the game for Wauseon, and sparking some major momentum for the Indians. Kris performance was huge. He has improved individually as much as any player I have coached, from the beginning of the season to the end of the season Indian Coach Chad Burt said I think its a confidence thing. His rebounding has been the unsung key for him. The Tribe and the Bulldogs traded buckets, with Wauseon tying the contest several times, but being unable to take a lead until the 5:10 mark of the second quarter, when junior Jacob Newlove attacked the basket, putting Wauseon up 24-22. With Noah Castle picking up his second foul, Zach Johnson stepped up huge for the Tribe off the bench, scoring four points on consecutive possessions. Johnsons buckets gave Wauseon a 32-28 with two minutes remaining in the first half. At the 1:30 mark, Scotts Trey Brown was able to convert an old fashion three point play, making it a one point contest, 32-31. Neither team would be able to find the bucket for the remainder of the half, and it was the Tribe who held a 32-31 lead at the end of the first half of action. Defense, as it has been much of the season, was the key for Wauseon in the third quarter. Weve hung our hat our the defensive end all year. Our goal was to turn them in to a jump shooting team, and I think overall we did that Coach Burt said. This was never more evident than in the third quarter, as Wauseon held Scott to only five points. Castles defense was a key aspect of the Indians game plan in the quarter as he was able to battle with Scott big man Percy Bogan, forcing Bogan to pick up four fouls midway through the quarter, and having to sit out of the contest to avoid getting his fifth. The Tribe was able to capitalize on the offensive end, going on a 10-0 run in the final five minutes of the third quarter, capped off by a thunderous dunk by Boysel, igniting the Wauseon bench and Indian faithful in the stands. At the end of three quarters of

play, Wauseon had jumped out to a 43-36 lead, and were eight minutes away from a trip to the district championship game. The Bulldogs were not going to go out easy though, and would make sure the Tribe would have to earn the victory. Darrington looked to get his team back in the contest, scoring six points four minutes in to the contest, and narrowing the Indian lead to only three, 48-45 with 4:30 left in the contest. Wauseons offense again found their groove after a slow start to the quarter, scoring seven straight points, book ended by another three point shot by Robinson, giving the Tribe their biggest lead of the night at ten. Scotts Bogan also picked up his fifth foul and was forced to sit for the remained of the game. With 1:50 seconds left, Wauseon held a 55-45 lead, and it seemed as if the Indians were poised to simply cruise to a victory, but the Bulldogs had other plans. Scott forced the Wauseon to commit a couple of turnovers, and after holding a ten point lead, suddenly with a minute left, it was a four point contest 5753. Scott set up their offense, but the Indian defense made it difficult to get a good look at the basket. One of the big possessions for us was when we were up four and they had the ball with about 40 seconds left said Coach Burt They couldnt get a shot off. Finally at about 20 seconds they got a shot off, and we were able to get a defensive rebound. If they get a score in that situation, and they are down two with 30 seconds left, it would have put us on our heels even more. Our guys did a great job recognizing that was a huge defensive possession for us. The Indians were able to weather the Bulldog storm. Scott was still down four with twelve seconds left. The Bulldogs hit a shot from the post with two seconds left, but it was to no avail, as the Indians held on to claim a 57-55 win. Castle was proud of the way his team played. Theyre a really good team. We have struggled this year against teams that liked to get up and down the court, but tonight I think we proved to a lot of people, and even to ourselves, that we can hang with some tough teams in a division said Castle. Boysel set the pace on the offensive end for the Indians, scoring 16 points. Corry Byers followed with 11, Castle contributed ten, Robinson scored nine, Newlove put up seven, and Johnson rounded out the scoring for the Tribe with four. Defiant Pettisville Blackbirds Bow Out Of Districts Versus Wayne Trace

half tied at 18-18. The start of the second half proved to be the deciding factor in the game as a series of Pettisville turnovers turned into Wayne Trace transitional points, giving them a lead that they would not surrender. The first four Blackbirds' possessions became turnovers and transitional points as the Raiders clamped down with a trapping 1-3-1 zone. The Raiders carried a 31-23 lead into the fourth, but they were never able to get the Boys in Black out of their rearview mirrors as the persistent Pettisville speed continued to harass and push their opponents. The Battling 'Birds again began the steep climb out of the hole, but this time it was simply too deep, and the Wayne Trace defense too strong to allow many open looks. To make matters worse, the war of attrition in fouls was beginning to take its toll on the Blackbirds, but they did not enjoy the same bench depth that the Raiders did. When top defender in Jeremy Mann fouled out with 1:47 left in the game and Pettisville down by five, the uphill climb only became steeper, and when Korben Rychener gave his final foul a minute later, the task became even harder. The Raiders made good on their free throw opportunities down the stretch to expand the lead out to ten at the final buzzer. "We knew they were going to bring the heat; we knew that we were going to have to answer, and obviously we did," said Pettisville Head Coach Greg Nofziger. "I thought that the kids battled back in the fourth. We had to sit down and just play one possession at a time, and I thought that we were trying to make some runs, but obviously we dug ourselves too deep of a hole in the third...and they're too good of a team to be down to like that. You can't get down to a team that has that much quality all the way around and give them ten points...that just doesn't work." The defeat ends the Blackbirds' season, as well as the careers of seniors Mann, Dykstra, Rychener and Jacob Reyes. "Jacob Reyes had a great attitude for us all year, and he really improved for us from the start of the year to the end of the year," Coach Nofziger said as he talked about his seniors. "Jeremy Mann just became our defensive stopper...he did an excellent job all year long. It's kind of a thankless job, but he certainly stepped up and did it. Dykstra, as the season progressed, he became more and more of a leader on our rebounding, and did an excellent job for us down the stretch. Korben Rychener...when the season started, Korben maybe didn't know he was our leader, but he was. As the season progressed, he found out that he was. We had confidence in him; he had confidence in himself and just had a great year." Rychener hung up his high tops with a team high 12 points, while Tate Kauffman had 7 points and Dykstra 6. Josh Liechty finished with 5 points, Mann had 3, and Eli King and Noah Miller each had 2 points.

VAN WERT: March 4, 2014 The Pettisville Blackbirds, champions of the Bryan D-IV Sectionals and co-champions of the BBC, took their show on the road to The Den in Van Wert to take on the D-IV and GMC champion Wayne Trace Raiders in the opening round of the D-IV Districts. The task ahead of the Battling 'Birds was, in a word, daunting. Pettisville came into the game with a 13-11 record after escaping the North Central Eagles on a buzzer beater by Korben Rychener to cut the nets in Bryan. Wayne Trace, as Pettisville quickly found out, is no North Central. The Eagles had one man over six feet in height in stature...Chase Legacy at 6' 4". Pettisville also had one man over six foot...Austin Dykstra at 6' 2". The parity in size and speed made for a great championship game, but with the Districts now in play, the Blackbirds were looking at something that they had not seen all season. The Pettisville roster has 10 players, two of which are six foot and over. The #10-ranked Raiders have 13 on their roster, only two of which are UNDER six feet. The other eleven players that make up the Raiders are at least six feet in height. It got more daunting from there for the Pettisville boys considering that four are 6' 3", two are 6' 5" and one is 6' 6". In what initially appeared to be a basketball match between the Gullivers and the Lilliputians, there came into play two factors that do not appear on any stat sheet or program guide though...the speed and heart of Pettisville. When the Raiders were poised to stomp the Blackbirds like grapes, those two factors frustrated the giants, and although Wayne Trace eventually prevailed by a 47-37 score, they were only able to do so by burying free throws down the stretch. Pettisville scored first on an Austin Dykstra bucket, but the Raiders were quick to reply. At that point, using their superior height at every position, it looked like the Raiders were simply going to squash the Blackbirds with their size advantage, but the Pettisville boys did what they do best to get back into the game...remain cool and ramp up the speed. The Raiders' momentum was slowed, and the Blackbirds began to get back into the flow of the game. Their speed left the Wayne Trace squad at times looking like giants swatting at flies, and as a result they began to rack up fouls. The advantage did not immediately shift to Pettisville though, as Wayne Trace Coach Jim Linder simply replaced one giant with another, but it did accelerate the pace to which the Blackbirds were able to get into the one-and-one free throw opportunities. By the end of the first period, Pettisville had climbed back to within a bucket at 10-8, and they continued to buzz the ball around the perimeter with quick, precision passing in the second, allowing them to not just tie the game, but also to reclaim slim one point leads before going into the

Wauseon Indians Take Fourteenth Place In D-II State Bowling

COLUMBUS: March 1, 2014 - The Wauseon Indians Bowling Team competed in the D-II State Final semifinals at Wayne Webbs Columbus Bowl on March 1. Unfortunately for the Tribe, they placed 14th overall, eliminating them from the eightteam cut that moves on to contend for the championship. The Tribe did not have a strong round of regular games, racking up just 2451 pins. The strength of the team all year though has been the Baker games. This day however, the Baker game boom needed by the Tribe never came to pass as they were only able to slam a 555. Kevin Moden closes his Wauseon career with a high series of 557, while Noah Stickley rolled the high game of 204. Head Coach Pat Carr said of the tournament run, This was a new experience; I have learned a lot, and will be better prepared for the new year. Of the final charge in Columbus, Coach Carr said, The team just couldnt get started until the third game and the third Baker game, and then it was too late. We were down too many pins to make it up in Bakers, which has been our strength this year. Kevin Moden, with a new ball, bowled well with a 557, and Noah Stickley bowled the teams high game with a 204. It has been a great season with the Wauseon Boys Bowling Team and with only losing one senior, Kevin Moden, I look forward to another great season next year! While fourteenth may not sound spectacular, it is important to put all things in perspective. In just our little corner of the state, there are 35 teams in the OHSAA D-II Northwest District. Add up all the D-II teams from the other six districts around the state, and being #14 out of that number says plenty about the great season the Tribe had, as well as the talent level of the team. They were the first and only team to roll a 300 Baker game during the regular season. During the postseason, they were the lone NWOAL team in Columbus, and became yet another Wauseon Indians team with OHSAA state finals experience. Swimming Action
Wauseon Takes Part In Ohio High School State Diving - Division 2
CANTON, OHIO (February 19, 2014) The Northwest District was represented well at the Division 2 Boys and Girls State Diving Meet on 2/19. Local divers representing the district for the Boys were: Brandon Poncsak (Bryan) and Hunter Rex (Napoleon). Both Brandon and Hunter made it to the final round of the State Meet, receiving All-Ohio Honors. Brandon completed the meet for a 13th place finish while Freshman Hunter Rex finishing in 14th place. Both very good finishes in a competitive Division 2 Boys event at the State Meet. Brandon finished his High School Diving Career very strongly. Kyle, a Freshman, made a very impressive showing at the State Meet and will look to improve on that finish next year. For the girls; local divers lead by Senior Aspen Flood (Napoleon) competed at a very tight Division 2 Girls State Diving event. Other local divers representing the Northwest District at the State Competition were Jordan Sloan and Patience Bachman, both of Wauseon. Aspen Flood (Senior, Napoleon) and Jordan Sloan (Junior, Wauseon) both earned All-Ohio Honors finishing 15th and 16th respectively. Aspen Flood looks to continue her diving career at the University of Toledo this fall. Freshman, Patience Bachman, finished in 21st place at the State Meet which was filled with many Junior and Senior divers. Both Jordan and Patience look to return to the state meet and improve on their finishes next year. Wauseon Coach, Tom Burkholder, was very happy with how all the local divers did at the State Meet. I couldnt be happier about how all of the local divers did this week in Canton. It was nice to see Brandon and Aspen finish their High School Careers on such a high note. It was also rewarding to see the younger divers do a great job at the meet. These athletes have to be proud about how they did. Their months of hard work and early practices have payed off. I know Napoleon has more young talent that just missed the State Meet this year and they will be exciting to watch in the future. Bryan also has a few younger divers that continue to develop. Wauseon also has numerous divers that just narrowly missed out on a State bid this year. You will see many Wauseon and Napoleon Divers representing this District at the State Meet in the years to come. Wauseon divers competed very well at the District Meet this year. Nine girls and nine boys qualify from the District Meet to compete at State. Patience Bachman finished 5th place with a personal best score and received All-District Honors. Jordan Sloan placed 6th with a personal best score and also received All-District Honors. Both of these girls qualified for the State Meet. Freshman, Alexys Carteaux, placed 12th at the District Meet; narrowly missing qualifying for state by 4.6 pts. She received All-District Honors at the meet. Junior, Alexis Witt, placed 16th and received AllDistrict Honors. Both Carteaux and Witt have promising futures as they also finished their seasons with personal bests at the District Meet. Wauseon was also represented by Cody Fry at the District Meet. Cody finished in 11th, narrowly missing a State bid. Cody left the meet with All-

JOB WELL DONE ... Patience Bachman and Jordan Sloan District Honors and a personal best score to finish his 2nd year of High School Diving. Coach Burkholder emphasized how proud he was of the hard work that his team put in this year. Many people do not realize how much these athletes are at the pool each day. A typical day often includes 1.5 hours of practice in the morning before school, followed by an hour of workouts after school, then wrapping up with approxi-

mately 2 hours of boardwork at the end of the day. The Wauseon Team was also well represented throughout the dual meet season by Raychel Ramos, Claudia Weber, Shayla Gates, and Jenna Rhodes. Many of these divers who do not participate in a spring sport are already back in the pool working to grow and mature as divers.
