RENO, Nev. - The National Bowling Stadium has played a big role in the history of the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, and that tradition continued Friday as the 111th edition of the tournament kicked off in The Biggest Little City in the World. Hundreds of bowlers, fans, friends, family and dignitaries helped usher in the 2014 USBC Open Championships, which will run for 136 days, concluding July 13. It is the event's record 12th trip to Reno and ninth visit to the NBS. The Opening-Day festivities included a ribbon cutting, traditional Mass Ball Shot Ceremony and live entertainment from the cast of "Ring of Fire," a musical based on the music of American singersongwriter Johnny Cash. The show is playing at the Eldorado Showroom until May 4.

As has been the tradition since 1951, Joe Bowler presided over the opening ceremony and helped officially start the tournament by throwing out the first ball. This year, the honor went to 63-year-old James Campton of Leavenworth, Kan., who knocked down five pins on his initial delivery. "It was quite an experience," said Campton, who made his 16th Open Championships appearance overall and second on Opening Day. "I enjoyed it, and it was a lot of fun, but a little nervewracking, too. I'll say this much, it's something that I'll never forget." On the lanes, Team Keeney of Casey, Ill., set the pace in Regular Team with a 2,731 total. The group was led by Chad Stevens, who shot 589. He was followed by Travis Heil (567), Stan Keeney (544), Tom Elsberry (525) and Jim Osborne (506).

In the Classified Division, Fagan Trucking of Shelton, Neb., set the bar with a 2,416 effort. Richard Hadenfeldt contributed a 586 series and was joined by Chuck Wellensiek (497), Van Alberts (485), Jan Hadenfeldt (469) and Dorothy Obermeier (379). Friday's squad included the first of more than 9,000 teams that will make their way to the NBS for this year's Open Championships, one of a handful of events being held in Reno in the coming months. The first night of the 2014 Open Championships also marked the first live stream broadcast of the year from Reno. There are nearly 30 broadcasts on the schedule, and they all will air on BowlTV, which is being sponsored by Track.

Silver Lake Atom Splitters Advance to PBA League Semifinal Round

ALLEN PARK, Mich. Chris Barnes and his Silver Lake Atom Splitters dominated Norm Duke and the Dallas Strikers to advance to the semifinal round of the Professional Bowlers Association League Elias Cup competition at Thunderbowl Lanes. Behind a 205-185 victory in the fiveman Baker team finale, Silver Lake, presented by Spiceworks, defeated Dallas, presented by the United States Bowling Congress, in a near-sweep, 5-1. In the singles match, Duke pulled himself out of his match against Barnes after recording four single-pin spares and one strike in five frames while Barnes started with six strikes for a 52-pin lead. Duke replaced himself with left-hander Rhino Page to give Page more practice on the PBA League lane condition, but it didnt matter. Barnes won the singles point comfortably, 265-208. Neither team could generate any momentum in alternate ball doubles. Silver Lakes Barnes and Bryon Smith took a one-pin lead into the 10th frame where Duke struck and then converted Mike Machugas 3-6-9-10 leave. Smith needed a strike to clinch the win for Silver Lake, but left a 10 pin. Barnes converted the spare, but again needing a strike for a one-pin victory, Smith knocked down eight pins to hand Dallas the doubles point, 195-194. The Atom Splitters, owned by Nerdist creator Chris Hardwick, won the Baker trios point, 213-184. Consecutive strikes by Dom Barrett, Wes Malott and Tommy Jones staked Silver Lake to a 31-pin lead after four frames. The Strikers, owned by NFL all-star receiver Terrell Owens, never mounted a threat, recording only three strikes through nine frames. The final quarterfinal round elimination match will pit actor/comedian Kevin Harts Philadelphia Hitmen against Pittsburgh Steelers all-pro linebacker LaMarr Woodleys Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits , on ESPN on Sunday, March 23, at 1 p.m. ET. The winner of the Hitmen-Jack Rabbits match will bowl the Silver Lake Atom Splitters on ESPN on Sunday, April 6, for right to advance to the Elias Cup finals.

Thomas Tink Washer, a Morris County USBC BA Hall of Famer posted his highest series to date, with 278-297 and 245 for 820, two pins over his previous high only barely a week earlier (300-818). This was in the Hensle Classic Trio League at Circle Lanes. His 818 was in the Friday Nite Sportsman League at Sparta Lanes. This lefthander has been bowling for 28 years, having bowled with his father at the former Franklin Lanes. Wayne Carney (manager) would help us and had us practice on the shot as he oiled the lanes.. He was substituting in the league that night, and other than that, only bowls in one league per week. He averages 231 in the Sparta League. He will receive a crystal plaque for his honors. In addition to his Hall of Fame status, he has won numerous leagues as well as the county scratch and team events in 2009 and 2011. He won the county doubles championship with Roy Henderson in 2006 and the Morris County Champion of Champions Tournament. He dedicated his latest victories to my son and daughter as every time I leave to bowl, they always slap the bag and tell me to bowl well. Robert Rogers Claims Monmouth County Masters Title

Robert Rogers, of Brick claimed the title at the 52nd Monmouth County USBC Masters Tournament at Bradley Beach Bowl in Bradley Beach, NJ. Rogers, after qualifying 12th with a six-game score of 1204 then compiled a 5-0 match play record with a tourney average of 193.875. Rusty Thomsen of South Amboy was the leading qualifier with a 1315 and also had the tourney high average of 215.857. In the two-game match play finals Rogers defeated Jeffrey Mead of Pt. Pleasant 372-370. He then beat Casey Creutz of New Brunswick 412381, then Walter McKnight Jr. of Brick 337-317, then topped Emil Dudas of Toms River 403-377, and went on to meet Brandon Fennell of Toms River for the final match. Brandon Fennell qualified sixth after six games with a score of 1242. Fennell lost his first match to Michael N. Stone, Hazlet 349-414, which put him into the Losers Bracket. He then defeated Michael J. Ormsby, Jackson 390-383. In the third match, he defeated Nathan J. Wilson, E. Windsor with scores of 376-297. Fennell continued to win the next four matches against Robert S. Hoffman of Freehold 414-362; Jason J. Cassano, Union Beach 379-362; Ray J. Smarsh, Matawan 425-396 and Emil Dudas of Toms River 404-392, before meeting Rogers for the championship match. In the championship match, Rogers claimed the title over Fennell with a 374-342. There were 172 participating in the tournament, which is the largest Masters tournament in New Jersey.

By Vince Albrecht HACKENSACK, NJ - In dj vu from last years sectionals, Kelley Grippo 269-714 and Leslie Subaldo 568 were again instrumental in leading top-ranked AHA [Holy Angels] to the North Jersey Girls Group II Title, although this year they also had ample support from freshman Tiffany Sucero 571. Just as they did last season, both Grippo and Subaldo qualified for the state individual tournament and Sucero will join them. Third-ranked Teaneck held off looming Warren Hills to join AHA down at Carolier to represent North Jersey Group II. Teaneck senior anchor Dana-Marie Laloo, the two-time Bergen County champion, added the sectionals individual title to her glowing bowling resume. Danas closing 256 pushed her over the 700 barrier with 719, enough to lead her team to second place and a trip to the state tournament. Dana-Marie Laloo, Kelley Grippo Lead Teams to State Tourney

anced quintet which came so close to winning both the FDU Team Challenge and the recent Bergen County Tournament, were not to be denied this goaround as they decisively ran away from Mother Seton and the other Group I schools to claim the title with an impressive 810-933-848-2591. Mother Seton, thrice defending champion, failed to make the state tournament, losing second place to Bayonne by twenty-seven pins. In Group III, after failing to make it to the state tournament last year, second-ranked Paramus Catholic put together a strong 902 finish to win the group crown by a healthy margin over runner-up Paramus. Senior Nikki Vucak led the formidable Paladins with a 598 threesome. Taking the Group IV title was Hackensack with 2225 and joining them at the state tournament will be Bayonne which, after spotting Bergen Tech sixty-one pins after game one, caught the Knights in game two and went on to take second place with 2168.
