As part of LLDFs mission, we defend the First Amendment rights of clients engaged in programs designed to educate the public about the sanctity of all human life. We do not charge our clients for our services. I am a senior staff attorney with the Life Legal Defense Foundation. Participants with Project Truth contacted me with several concerns regarding the news story about their outreach at Rancho Cordova High School that aired on your station on Friday, March 21, 2014. Project Truth is a pro-life activist ministry dedicated to educating high school and college aged young adults about the truth of abortion through the use of educational displays, literature and conversation. Participants have been peacefully distributing accurate and informative literature to Sacramento and Placer area schools for more than 15 years. Your news story, which depicts a man wearing a black shirt, dark colored pants and a baseball hat purportedly putting a Project Truth leaflet on Larry Blounts car in his driveway, was misleading and slanderous. First, the man depicted in the video is not a participant with Project Truth and did not put the leaflet on the car. It appears as though this was staged for the news story. If your story was truly about Getting Answers as you claim it was, then why didnt your reporter, Anjalie Hemphill, attempt to interview the man in the cap? Moreover, there were no media personnel or news cameras in the area on March 18, 2014 when Project Truth participants were handing out literature to the Rancho Cordova High School students.

LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE LAW

Both Larry Blount and Tallie Miller, interviewed by Ms. Hemphill, claim to be concerned about the students exposure to and reactions to the literature handed out by Project Truth participants. Yet, Ms. Hemphill did not interview the students themselves, who received the literature, to ask their opinion about the subject matter. Both interviewees also claim that the subject of abortion is a private matter that should only be discussed in the family setting. Yet, California high school students may be transported off school property to obtain an abortion without ever notifying a family member that the student left school or received the abortion! (87 Ops. Cal. Atty. Gen. 168 (2004)) Your story goes on to report that the team canvassed the neighborhood, putting fliers on vehicles in private driveways. It further suggests that the literature was found torn up and thrown on the ground all throughout the neighborhood. Both of these claims are absolutely false! Project Truths focus is to educate high school and college-aged students. They routinely hold signs and hand out literature on college campuses and on the public sidewalks in front of high school campuses, which is exactly what they did on March 18, 2014 in front of Rancho Cordova High School. They do not leaflet parking lots or neighborhoods. At no time did any of the Project Truth participants enter the neighborhood adjacent to Rancho Cordova High School or place literature on vehicles or other objects. Rather, they distributed literature directly to students who willingly accepted them when politely offered. Furthermore, they pick up any discarded brochures before leaving the area. On the day in question, approximately 200 brochures were given to students and only two brochures were picked up from the ground. The obvious bias and lack of true reporting demonstrated by Ms. Hemphill is deplorable. We are demanding that your news station 1) issue an apology to Project Truth for the false report, 2) report a follow up to the story correcting the falsehoods promulgated by Ms. Hemphill, and 3) denounce the threats of violence and hate speech listed in the comments section of the story on your stations website.
