Properties of Multiplication

Commutative Property
The order in which two numbers are
multiplied doesn’t change the product.

a∙b=b∙a

Ex: 3 ∙ 2 = 2 ∙ 3
Associative Property
The way you group three numbers when
multiplying doesn’t change the product

a ∙ (b ∙ c) = (a ∙ b) ∙ c

EX: 3 ∙ (2 ∙5) = (3 ∙ 2) ∙5
Identity Property
The product of 1 and a number is the
number.

1∙a=a

Ex: 1 ∙ 7 = 7
Property of zero
The product of a number and zero is zero.

0∙a=0

ex: 0 ∙ 9 = 0
Property of Opposites
The product of a number and -1 is the
opposite of the number.

(-1) ∙ a = -a

Ex: (-1)(3) = -3
