3 Writing Linear Equations Given Two Points
Write an equation of the line through (-2, -6) and (3,
4).
y2 − y1 4 − (−6) 10
m= = = =2 Find the slope of the line.
x2 − x1 3 − (−2) 5
−6 = 2(−2) + b Substitute -6 for y, -2 for x, and 2 for m.
−2 = b Simplify and solve for b.
y = 2x − 2 Subsitute 2 for m and -2 for b in slope-intercept form.
