Writing Linear

Equations from Standard

Form to
Slope-Intercept
Form and Vice Versa
OBJECTIVES:
Write linear equations from
standard form ax + by + c to
slope-intercept form y = mx + b,
and vice versa.
Activity
01 What’s My
Slope?
01 02
m = -2/5 m = -1/4
2x + 5y = 15 x + 4y = 9
03 04
m = -6/5 m = 5/6
(3, -1) (-2, 5) (2, 0) (-4, -5)
05
m = -2
Linear equations in two
variables can be expressed
in standard form and slope-
intercept form. The
equation y = 4x – 8 is in
slope-intercept form while
2x + 5y = 15 and ½x + 4y =
9 are in standard form.
Activity
02 Let’s Order
Pizza!
Jhenese was craving for pizza as she rewarded herself
for a job well done. She went to TIA NINA, a pizza
parlor in General Santos City. She paid Php 250 for
the regular pizza and Php 5 for each additional slice
of meat toppings. At the end, she paid Php 340 for her
pizza. How many slices of meat topping were added to
it?
Questions:
1. What is the linear equation that will represent
the cost to be paid for:
a. Regular prize? y = 250
b. With toppings? y = 5x + 250
A linear equation in two
variables which can be
written in two forms:
Standard form:
Ax + By = C where A, B
and C are element of
real numbers, A ≠ 0
and B ≠ 0
Slope-Intercept form:
y = mx + b, where m is
the slope and b is the
y-intercept, m and b
are element of real
numbers, and m ≠ 0.
A. Translating slope-intercept form to
standard form.
Example 1. Rewrite y = 5x + 250 into standard form ax + by = c
y = 5x + 250
-5x + y = 5x -5x + 250 Add -5x to both sides of the equation
(Addition Property of Equality)
-5x + y = 250 Arrange and Simplify

-1(-5x + y = 250) Since the leading coefficient cannot be

negative, thus, we will multiply/divide all
terms by -1 to make it positive.
5x – y = -250 Since this is already in the form ax + by = c
Thus, this is the Final answer.
A. Translating slope-intercept form to
standard form.
Example 2. Rewrite y = x - 2 into standard form ax + by = c

y=x–2
3(y) = (x – 2)3 Multiply all the terms by 3 (LCD).
Arrange and Simplify
3y = x -6
-x + 3y = x –x – 6 Add –x to both sides.

-x + 3y = -6 Arrange and simplify

-1(-x + 3y) = (-6)-1 Since the leading coefficient cannot be negative, thus,
we will multiply/divide all terms by -1 to make it positive.
x – 3y = 6 Final answer.
What about if the given is in standard form
and you are asked to rewrite it in slope-
intercept form, how are you going to do it?
B. Translating standard form to slope-
intercept form.
Example 1. Rewrite 3x + 2y = 5 in the form y = mx + b.

Linear Equation
3x + 2y = 5
Add -3x to both sides of the equation
3x – 3x + 2y = 5 – 3x
Arrange and simplify
2y = -3x + 5
Divide both sides of the equation with
y= + 2(coefficient of y).
y= +
Final answer.
B. Translating standard form to slope-
intercept form.
Example 2. Rewrite -2x + 7y – 14 = 0 in the form y = mx + b.

-2x + 7y – 14 = 0 Linear Equation

-2x + 2x + 7y – 14 + 14 = 0 + 2x + 14 Add 2x and 14 to both sides of the

equation.
Arrange and simplify
7y = 2x + 14

= + Divide both sides of the equation

with 7(coefficient of y).
3y = x -6 Final answer.
Activity
03 Let’s Write
It
A. Write the following linear equations
in the form Ax + By = C.

01 y = 2x - 7 2x - y = 7
02 y = 2x 2x – y = 0
03 y = x + 2x – 3y = -1
B. Write the following linear equations
in the form y = mx + b.

01 5x + 2y = 10 y = -x + 5

02 x – 3y – 9 = 0 y=x-3

03 6x + y = 12 y = -6x + 12
