Ilocos arts includes:

ILOCOS NORTE

• Known for various cottage industries like furniture making,

cloth weaving, pottery making, wood carving and
blacksmithing.

• The “Burnay Industry” (Pottery business) in Vigan is a

popular cottage industry.
• The early Chinese settlers introduced the burnay, which
serves as an all-weather container of local products that were
shipped to China and other Asian kingdoms.

• It is believed that the name Paete,
comes from the word “paet” the
local term for chisel.

MAT WEAVING
• Is an old folk art practice of our
forefathers.
• Many of the mats are made from
“buri” which are considered to be

• In Cagayan valley, dried bananas
petioles are used as weaving
materials.

• Are used as storage for food and
hunting.
• Are used to transport grains and

as materials in this craft.

• Before Spaniard came, native
folks created ceramic jars to keep
the remains of their dead relative
