ax + by = c in the Form y = mx + b
and Vice Versa
Rewrite the following names into surname, given name middle name
x - 2y = 6
y = - 3x - 1
Now, can standard form
y =-5x - 7 of a line be in the
form y = mx + b?
S!
HOW? x+y=5
E
The slope-intercept form is
y= mx + b
Our main goal is
to get the y alone on one side of the
equation
Transform: x + y = 5 to y = mx + b
1. To isolate y to the left side of the equation, we will apply,
Properties of Equality
-x+ x+y=5 –x by Addition Property of Equality
by Addition Property of
-x + x - y = 5 – x Equality
-x + x - y = 5 – x by Additive Inverse Property
-y = -x +5 of Equality
2. Divide each term of the equation by the coefficient of y.
-y = -x +5
-1 -1 -1 y=x-5
If the coefficient of y ≠ +1,
b. Transform: x - 2y = 6 to y = mx
+b
1. Isolate y to the left of the equation.
x - 2y = 6
by Addition Property of
x - x - 2y = 6 – x Equality
x - x - 2y = 6 –x by Additive Inverse Property
-2y = -x +6 of Equality
2. Divide each term of the equation by the coefficient of y.
-2y = -x + 6 y=x–3
-2 -2 -2 2
But, wait …
HOW?
how about changing
slopeYE–SSS SS!!!!form
intercept
to standard form,
is it possible?
Step in transforming slope- intercept form
(y = mx+ b) to standard form of a line (ax + by = c) :
Note: In standard form, we use only integers and a positive
coefficient for x.
Transform y = - 3x – 1 into ax + by = c
Our objective is to isolate c or the constant to the right side
of the equation and use the properties of equality to get the
equation in the form ax + by = c
y = - 3x – 1 Add 3x to both sides of the equation(APE)
y +3x= - 3x+ 3x – 1 Inverse Property of Addition
Arrange in the form ax + by = c 3x + y = – 1
