Identify the degree of the
given polynomials in one
variable.
3x y – 5x + 2
3 2
x+3
x – 2 + 4x 4
a x + 3x - 9
3 2 3
Quadratic
equations
The name Quadratic comes from
"quad" meaning square, because
the variable gets squared
(like x2).It is also called an
"Equation of Degree 2" (because
of the "2" on the x)
For Example:
Determine whether each equation is quadratic or not.

1. 3x – 6 = 3
NOT

2. 5x + 5x2 = 3
QUADRATIC

3. 11 + x3 + x2 = 4
NOT
11 + x2 = 11x + x2 – 1

11 + x2 = 11x + x2 – 1 11 + x2 – x2= 11x– 1

11 = 11x– 1
11x = 12
•
A quadratic equation in one
variable in an equation that
can be written in the standard
form , where a, b and c are
real numbers and a ≠ 0
For Example:

In disguise In Standard Form a, b and c

x2 = 3x − 1 Move all terms x2 − 3x + 1 = 0 a=1, b=−3, c=1
to left hand side
2(w2 − 2w) = 5 Expand (undo 2w2 − 4w − 5 = 0 a=2, b=−4, c=−5
the brackets),
and move 5 to
left

z(z−1) = 3 Expand, and z2 − z − 3 = 0 a=1, b=−1, c=−3

move 3 to left
2. 2x(x-2)= 6
2x(x-2)= 6 2x2 -4x = 6
2x2 -4x – 6 = 6 – 6
2x2 -4x – 6 = 0

The equation becomes 2x2 -4x – 6 = 0, which is in the standard

form.
In the equation 2x2 -4x – 6 = 0, a = 2, b = -4 and c = -6.
1. x(x+1) = 6
x2 + x – 6 = 0
a=1
b=2
c = -6
