The Moorestown Theater Com-
pany is in its 12th season and has
come a long way since it first
began.
When we started 12 years ago,
we did one play, Producing Artis-
tic Director Mark Morgan said.
We didnt have the Summer
Stage Musical Theater Camp or
any official employees then. But,
12 years later, were doing some
pretty miraculous things.
Throughout this summer, MTC
will present five different musi-
cals. The first performance of the
summer was Annie, which took
place between July 9 and July 11.
Annie is the big draw for
many of the kids, Morgan said.
Its a musical most of the kids
know, and it was really great. We
sold out four of the six shows, and
the performances were outstand-
ing.
Each musical provides a chal-
lenge for Morgan. The casting
and rehearsals for most of the
plays are done within a two-week
period before the play opens.
It definitely makes it tough,
and parents are always amazed
when the production comes out,
Morgan said. They cant believe
that in only two weeks, we man-
age to put these musicals togeth-
er.
The MTC is currently perform-
ing Fiddler on the Roof, which
opened on July 17. There are also
performances scheduled for July
24-26.
Fiddler is a little bit different
than the other summer musi-
cals, Morgan said. We put to-
gether the cast in May and have
been rehearsing for the past two
months for this one. It should be a
great show, and we hope to pay
homage to the play on its 50th an-
niversary.
With so many rehearsals and
performances, Morgan has been
quite busy throughout the sum-
mer. On top of his duties as the di-
rector for the MTC and running
the Summer Stage Musical The-
ater Camp, Morgan will also be
directing two of the musicals this
summer: Fiddler on the Roof
and My Son Pinocchio.
I dont have much downtime,
thats for sure, he said. But, I
wouldnt do it if I didnt love it.
Every year, we get more requests
from parents and performers that
want to do more musicals, so we
keep adding things.
According to Morgan, the more
he adds, the more difficult it be-
comes because the MTC does not
have its own building. The musi-
cals are performed on a variety of
stages in Moorestown, including
the William Allen Middle School
and various churches.
It definitely makes it much
harder to put on the musicals
without our own building, he
said. We have to end rehearsals
early so we can clean up and
move things to the next building,

Morgan hopes that in the fu-

building, now that the program
has grown so much and the foun-

performing arts organization.
We have more and more kids
signing up each summer, Mor-

Thats where success comes
from. Some of these kids are

Dana Guglielmo has seen a lot
of running in her life. She was a
member of the track team at both
Moorestown High School and
Richmond University. But, when
she saw a joggler on television
while watching a marathon race,
she was immediately enthralled.
I had never seen anything like
that, Guglielmo said. I thought
it was hilarious, and I knew I had
to try it.
Joggling is a mix of running
and juggling. Guglielmo had the
running down, but she had to
master juggling before she could
really start joggling. She had a lit-
tle background in the sport, but
she knew someone who could re-
ally show her how to do it.
My older brother ran track in
high school, too, she said. He
mastered juggling during track
meets. Sometimes youre at the
track for a whole day and you
only run one race, so he used to
practice all the time during the
meets and eventually he got pret-
ty good at it.
She picked it up quickly, and it
wasnt long before she was jog-
gling during races. One race in
particular put her in the record
books.
Not long after I really started
joggling, I realized I had a chance
to break the Guinness World
Record. I knew I had the running
down, and once I learned the jug-

Mayor: Council committed to
finding ways to improve town
The Town Council meeting held on Mon-
day, July 7 was an extraordinary meeting
for many reasons. Sustainable
Moorestown presented the findings of its
investigation into whether a solar project
was suitable for the township and identi-
fied the potential for a solar field to be lo-
cated at the Pulverizer Services site located
on New Albany Road. The Pulverizer Serv-
ices site is an EPA Superfund Site and
brownfield. The goal would be to install a
solar array on approximately seven acres
to produce five mega watts of power, which
is equivalent to the power used annually by
the township buildings, including the light-
ing for the sports fields. In addition to off-
setting most if not all of the costs of power-
ing the township facilities and reducing
the townships carbon footprint, this capi-
tal investment has the capacity to generate
a substantial cash flow depending on the
townships investment. In addition, there is
a competitive grant offered by EPA we can
pursue to convert brownfields to solar
fields. I stress that this project is still in its
infancy, and there is substantial research
and planning that needs to be completed.
The next step is to engage the services of
an engineer to help move the plan forward.
This is an exciting endeavor that will yield
W
ere all for workers rights.
Were all for equal and fair
pay. Were all for providing
people who work hard with a good liv-
ing, no matter what they choose to do.
However, were not for government-
mandated raises, especially for work-
ers who typically make more than
minimum wage.
New Jersey Policy Perspective is
urging lawmakers to increase the
states minimum wage for tipped em-
ployees from $2.13 per hour to $5.69 per
hour a 167 percent increase. The As-
sembly Labor Committee passed such
a bill in March.
The group argues tipped workers
earn less than twice that of their non-
tipped counterparts and, as a result,
are more likely to live near the poverty
line.
The non-profit Economic Policy In-
stitute, which suggests paying tipped
workers the same minimum wage as
non-tipped workers, $8.25, says tipped
workers have a poverty rate twice that
of non-tipped workers, are more likely
to rely on public assistance and less
likely to receive benefits such as paid-
time off and health coverage.
Tipped workers in this state havent
had a raise in their minimum wage
since 1991, sitting at $2.13 per hour
the federal minimum for more than
20 years.
But this is where the controversy be-
gins. The New Jersey Restaurant Asso-
ciation opposes the increase, obviously,
and it has a very good point. The asso-
ciations president, Marilou Halvors-
en, reminds us that tipped workers are
guaranteed to make at least the states
minimum wage of $8.25; if they leave
making less than that in tips, the em-
ployer is obligated to make up the dif-
ference, she said.
So whats the fuss about, then?
Halvorsen says a survey of the associa-
tions membership found that tipped
workers earn between $15-$16 per hour
on average. Extrapolate that over a 40-
hour week, and thats a salary north of
$30,000 per year.
Seems to us the system currently in
place protects tipped workers just fine.
Giving them the proposed $3.56-per-
hour raise would equate to an addi-
tional $7,404.80 per year, per employee
based on a 40-hour work week, for a
total salary of almost $40,000 per year.
And the difference in salary would
come out of the business pocket.
If these businesses are required to
pay that difference, it wouldnt be sur-
prising if they simply laid off a tipped
worker or two and got by with a small-
er staff. That would accomplish almost
exactly the opposite of what these
groups, and the proposed bill, seek to
do. We urge the Legislature to resist
passing this bill. Tipped workers are
already compensated at appropriate
levels.
And well continue to tip 20 percent.
No need to increase tipped pay
State government shouldnt increase minimum wage for tipped workers

Deadline approaches to file
for school board election
BY ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Students in local schools are
used to being asked to hand their
homework in on time, but now
those adults looking to serve on
their local board of education
must do the same.
July 28 marks the deadline for
school board hopefuls to file their
board of education candidacies
with the Burlington County
Clerks Office to have their name
officially placed on the ballot in
November.
Nominating petitions are due
to the Burlington County Clerks
Office, Courts Facility, 1st Floor,
49 Rancocas Road, Mount Holly,
08060 by 4 p.m. on July 28.
Legal requirements to become
a board of education member in-
clude:
Holding U.S. citizenship and
being a resident of the school dis-
trict for at least one year.
Being a registered voter in the
school district before filing a
nominating petition.
Being able to read and write.
Have no claim against, or in-
terest in contract with, the board.
Not holding another office in
the municipal or county govern-
ing body.
Not holding two elective of-
fices simultaneously.
Not be disqualified from
membership for the conviction of
certain crimes. (Within 30 days of
election or appointment to the
board, the Department of Educa-
tion will conduct a criminal histo-
ry background investigation on
board members.)
Successful nominating peti-
tions are the documents that
allow candidates to have their
names officially placed on the
election ballot in November.
To nominate a candidate, the
signatures of at least 10 qualified
voters living within the district
are required, one of which may
belong to the candidate.
Candidates must also abide by
all New Jersey requirements re-
garding the filing of campaign ex-
pense reports with the New Jer-
sey Election Law Enforcement
Commission.
A candidates three-year term
will begin in January 2015.
Those looking for more infor-
mation about filing can visit
www.njsba.org/candidacy.
The nominating petition can be
retrieved at the Burlington Coun-
ty Clerks office or digitally at

benefits to our residents for years
to come.
Kathy Logue of the Friends of
Percheron Park updated the
council on the fundraising efforts
for Percheron Park. Percheron
Park is going to be located at the
corner of Main Street and High
Street. The site was previously oc-
cupied by a gas station and is cur-
rently undergoing environmental
remediation related to its prior
use. The FOPP have raised about
$70,000 for the construction of the
park. Depending on when the en-
vironmental remediation is com-
pleted, construction of the park
should start soon. Percheron
Park will be a great part of Main
Street to be enjoyed by our resi-
dents and visitors alike.
Lastly, Ragan Design Group
provided its findings related to its
diligent and exhaustive investiga-
tion into the costs associated with
renovating the old library build-
ing. Regrettably, due to the condi-
tion of the building, it will cost
about $3.4 million to repair the
problems and bring the building
current with building codes.
Moreover, it will cost over $3 mil-
lion to fit out the building for an-
other use for a total cost exceed-
ing $6.4 million. Additionally,
there are not enough parking
spaces to accommodate the new

and in my own district of
Moorestown. I am a career edu-
cator and have held positions
from teacher to district superin-
tendent in New Jersey. Of partic-
ular relevance to the issue of test-
ing in New Jersey, I have worked
as the director of academic stan-
dards and the Office of Math and
Science at the state Department
of Education. For the last three
and a half years, I have worked as
the director of the field impact
team at Student Achievement
Partners, a non-profit organiza-
tion in New York City founded by
leading architects of the Com-
mon Core State Standards. Our
organization is committed to sup-
porting educators across the
country in the important work of
raising student achievement
through quality implementation
of the Common Core State Stan-
dards, which were adopted by
New Jersey more than four years
ago.
In my position, I work closely
not only with the standards, but
also with information regarding
the assessments being developed
to evaluate student learning of
these standards. In New Jersey,
the PARCC testing will be used
for the large-scale state testing
this year. After reading the edi-
tors piece, I would just like to cor-
rect and clarify a few points about
the assessment. These points are
not points of opinion, but points
of fact.
First, I think it is important to
note that the PARCC assessment
will include grades three through
11. In high school, the assessment
will look like end of course as-
sessments rather than the cur-
rent HSPA given in 11th grade
that is a general math and litera-
cy assessment.
Second, this is not a fall testing.
The testing occurs in the spring.
There will be two testing events
one in the early spring to assess
performance-type items and an-
other close to the end of the
school year to assess the profi-
ciency of the grade level stan-
dards.
Regarding the technology, I
think we all know that this is a
challenge. I would like to make a
couple of points about this. Dis-
tricts have been made aware of
the specific technology require-
ments for this assessment for
more than two years now, al-
though we have known generally
that this would be an online as-
sessment for three years. In
many districts, this has been han-
dled well. Other districts are chal-
lenged by pro-active long range
planning. My opinion piece on
this technology is that the access
to technology required to admin-
ister the PARCC assessment is the
type of access students should
have to technology in a school set-
ting in the year 2014, regardless of
the existence of an online assess-
ment. This isnt about testing. It
is about technology commitment,
investment and leadership.
There is an incredible amount
of misinformation and disinfor-
mation regarding both the Com-
mon Core State Standards and
the assessments. I appreciate the
opportunity to clarify some of the
facts here.

gling, I just had to put the two to-
gether, she said.
On April 6, at The Codependen-
cy 5K at Cooper River Park in
Pennsauken, she broke the
record, running the race in 20:40.
The previous 5K joggling record
was held by Laurie Young, whose
time was 27:42.
The hardest part of the entire
process was actually collecting
the evidence, she said. You need
to have three witnesses and a
video to prove you broke a record,
which is definitely going to make
it easier going forward.
Now that she is the 5K record
holder, Guglielmo has set her
sights on breaking more records.
Her long-term goal is to joggle
during a marathon, but in the
meantime, she is planning a 10K
at the end of August in Atlanta.
I have to keep running shorter
races before I just dive head-first
into a marathon, she says. And
these races are going to be for
charity, too, so I want to raise as
much money as I can.
Guglielmo has suffered from
Rheumatoid arthritis since she
was 17. During the 10K in Atlanta,
she will be running for the
Arthritis National Research
Foundation.
I used to wake up with severe
pain in my joints and I knew
something was wrong, she said.
It has been tough dealing with
the pain, and I used to try to just
run through it. But, I now see
that the pain is always going to be
there if I dont take a proactive
approach, so I dont run through
the pain anymore. Whatever I can
do to help with arthritis research,
I want to do. So, hopefully I can
spread the word a little bit during
my next few races.
