Tools: Extending Our Reach
Cooper-Hewitt 2014 ISBN 9780910503778 Acqn 23870
Hb 20x24cm 176pp 200col ills 21

Tools celebrates the richness of the human imagination through a surprising range of juxtaposed
and seemingly disparate objects. Accompanying an exhibition of the same name that celebrates
the fall 2014 reopening of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, Tools is unprecedented
in its composition of collaborators--the exhibition is Cooper Hewitt's first pan-institutional show,
spanning ten Smithsonian museums. From the earliest times to the present, tools have been at
the frontier of design, demonstrating how technology and culture are inextricably linked. Consider,
for example, that hand axes remained the dominant tool for 1.5 million years before any
significant change was made to the human toolkit, and that the range of tools began to expand
only 10,000 years ago. It is notable that the design of our basic tools--hammers, saws,
screwdrivers, drills--has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, indicating not only
their continuity of need and function, but also the effectiveness of their design solutions. Their
various incarnations and histories link us to the past. Other tools highlight new technologies and
scientific breakthroughs that have opened new worlds to us. Through lush images, authoritative
essays and superb design, the book shows the interconnectedness of scientists, designers,
historians, anthropologists, engineers and artists through design-thinking and problem-solving,
while also looking at various design perspectives and methodologies. Tools explores the world of
design ideas while celebrating human ingenuity across cultures and over time.

Eat Design
Metro Verlag 2013 ISBN 9783993001520 Acqn 23610
Hb 25x25cm 224pp 80col ills 46

Conceived, styled and written by Sonja Stummerer and Martin Hablesreiter, and photographed by
Ulrike Kb and Daisuke Akita, Eat Design is ostensibly the pinnacle of epicurean design.
Beginning from the essentiality of eating to organic life, it expands to encompass the purely
physiological dimension of food intake for humans: The way we eat is not biologically
programmed but culturally acquired. Throwing social conventions to the wind, the authors
purposefully attempt to subvert the strict systems of rules regarding hierarchy, consumption and
enjoyment of food through its instruments, furniture, spaces, attire, materials and colours in a
bizarre and nonsensical series of images.

Science Of The Secondary 2 Cup
Atelier Hoko 2014 ISBN 9789810798765 Acqn 24034
Pb 18x25cm 52pp 70ills 60col 15.75

Conceived by Atelier HOKO, this booklet is an inquisitive approach towards uncovering implicit
conditions that exist in our experience of the everyday. The term secondary refers to material
and immaterial conditions and sensations that humans are not conscious of in their interaction
with things and the immediate surroundings. In so doing, the independent research lab hopes to
draw upon a renewed sensibility towards living. This instalment analyses the act of drinking from
a cup in exceeding detail, through photos, diagrams and texts. Atelier HOKO developed this
programme in response to questions on how design today can move beyond its perceived
perimeters.
