In And Out Of Fashion - 200 Years Of Clothing

ArtEZ Press 2018 ISBN 9789491444548 Acqn 28927
Pb 17x25cm 368pp 400ills 300col £54.50

There's no escaping fashion. Everyone wears clothes, and that means making choices, always
raising the same practical, strategic, political, or entirely irrational question: What should I put on?
In this guide, Karin Schacknat has found a new, comprehensive way to illustrate the
developments in European clothing and apparel-related behaviour from antiquity to the beginning
of the 21st century. From the toga to Dolce & Gabbana, from the 17th century lace collar to Iris
van Herpen. So much of what's gone out of fashion has come back in. The book's many images
of historical clothing are enhanced by recent illustrations, film stills, and fashion photos featuring
current styles, making this a vast treasure trove of contemporary fashion design ideas.

Play With Ukiyo-e - Children's And Toy Ukioy-e In The Edo Period
Seigensha Art Publishing 2018 ISBN 9784861526596 Acqn 28447
Pb 21x15cm 232pp 200col ills £27.50
Text in Japanese

Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world, are the cultural media that define the Edo Period in Japan,
and their themes have a wide range. A considerable number of these prints feature children. The
vibrant depictions of children at play, quarrelling, being spoiled by mothers and older sisters, or
showing off talents surpassing their adult counterparts, evokes an enchanting world of discovery
and nostalgia. Besides prints, Ukiyo-e artists also created toy paper crafts for children, known as
Omocha-e. This book offers a rich overview of different types of Ukiyo-e, both about and for
children, selected from among thousands of examples in the collection of the Kumon Institute of
Education.

It's My Own - An Everyday Fashion Story

MAD Brussels Fashion 2018 no ISBN Acqn 28891
Pb 20x26cm 200pp 200ills 100col £21.95

This catalogue is published as part of an eponymous exhibition at MAD - Brussels Fashion and
Design Platform that explores the fashion and world of Belgian duo OWN. It is not a retrospective,
but rather an invitation to discover a warehouse where diverse pieces can be found side by side,
the traces of a personal fashion vocabulary composed over the course of sixteen seasons. OWN
invited a range of creative actors, from designer to graphic artist, scenographer, photographer,
architect, and choreographer, to delve into their archives and reinvent them. It is a world in which
different approaches to fashion are confronted, examining notions such as the everyday and
desire.

Nenge - By Yuichi Ikeda, Eisuke Kawamoto

Seigensha Art Publishing 2018 ISBN 9784861526435 Acqn 28412
Pb 18x26cm 208pp 84col ills £46.50

'Kado' is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, and the fact that artistically arranging plants
and vessels has become a culture in its own right is closely related to religious elements and
flower offerings in Shinto and Buddhism. It is just one aspect that is representative of the deep
connection to nature within Japanese culture. Its people have honed their sense of beauty
through their sensible perception of the impermanence inherent in plants. This book neither
draws on currents of the traditional 'kado' nor follows Western styles of flower arrangement.
Ignoring rules and conventions, designer and chef Shinichiro Ogata aims to communicate a new,
daring notion of "contemporary flowers".

Claus Porto - 130 Years

Claus Porto/ Ach Brito 2018 ISBN 9789892079257 Acqn 28571
Pb 24x32cm 230pp col ills £70

This book celebrates the brand Claus Porto, but is actually the story of two companies: Claus &
Schweder, established in Portugal by two German entrepreneurs in 1887, gave rise to Ach. Brito
in 1918, which in turn reclaimed and revitalised the original brand's legacy. The enterprise
transformed an industry and in so doing changed social habits and tastes. Ferdinand Claus and
Georges Schweder started their soap and fragrance factory in Porto, a move which helped to
democratise beauty products in the country, previously only accessible to the wealthy. The
decorative labels and packaging designs, many of which are reproduced here, drew upon the
era's ornate aesthetic.

Gisele Buthod-Garcon - The Clay, Simply

Prisme Editions 2018 ISBN 9782930451251 Acqn 28677
Hb 20x26cm 144pp col ills £43.95

Gisele Buthod-Garcon's passion for clay was awakened in Senegal in 1979. The raw aspect of
clay, the burning vivacity it offers, and its carnal appearance are at the heart of this attraction.
Since adopting ceramics and starting to work professionally in 1982, she has continually
experimented. All of her work is conditioned by her use of a specific method known as raku firing.
Oily enamel and raku seem irreconcilable, yet the artist has become recognised on the basis of
this paradox, able to combine rough surfaces and formal harmony. This catalogue with texts by
various authors is published on the occasion of an exhibition of Buthod-Garcon's work at Keramis
in Belgium.
