Fundamentals of Formation Testing
By Schlumberger
Cost-effective formation testing is a vital part of
modern oil and gas operations. As production
companies pursue reserves in high-cost, high-risk
environments, formation testing plays an increas-
ingly prominent role in decision making, but
complete understanding of downhole conditions
is crucial from the first exploratory well to wells
drilled for enhanced recovery in any field. This
reference book, produced by Schlumberger for
oilfield technical professionals, illustrates state-of-
the-art technologies with field examples from well
testing applications to test design, operations, and
interpretation.

Seismic Inversion
By Mrinal K. Sen
Seismic Inversion is commonly used on post-
stack and pre-stack seismic data for estimating
rock properties used in reservoir characterization.
While seismic migration is aimed at imaging
the reflectors or the interfaces at their correct
subsurface locations, seismic inversion attempts
to estimate elastic and flow properties of the lay-
ers bounded by these interfaces. Seismic data are
sensitive essentially to seismic wave velocity and
density contrasts in the subsurface rocks. Because
of significant overlap in elastic properties among
different rock types, mapping of these elastic
properties to rock types and estimating porosity are not trivial. Thus, seismic
inversion is best done by combining data of all types such as seismic, well log,
petrophysics, and production history.
The results of seismic inversion can be best interpreted by a team of geologists,
geophysicists, and reservoir engineers. The goal of this primer is to explain the
fundamental principles of seismic exploration, seismic wave propagation, and
inversion in a language that is understandable by geoscientists and engineers
alike so that the team is aware of the significance and limitations of the inversion
results.

The new edition of this best-selling title was
undeniably needed in order to reflect the changes
that occurred in drilling techniques over the past
ten years. New Specifications and Recommended
Practices have been published by the American
Petroleum Institute. Meanwhile, manufacturers
have also greatly improved their equipment. In
particular, remarkable progress has been achieved
in the following fields: horizontal displacement
distance in directional and horizontal drilling,
coiled tubing units are now being used almost
systematically during workover; the range of
drilling bits has been entirely renewed, and the classifications and Used Bit Dull
Grading System Format and Codes of the IADC have been modified accord-
ingly and new dimensions and weights for casings have appeared with the drill-
ing of HP-HT wells.

Mechanistic Modeling of Gas/Liquid
Two-Phase Flow in Pipes
By Ovadia Shoham
The objectives of this book are two-fold: to provide
insight and understanding of two-phase flow phe-
nomena and to develop analytical tools for either
designing two-phase flow systems or conducting
research in this area. The traditional approach for
two-phase flow prediction has been the empirical
approach, which was based on the development of
an empirical correlation from experimental data.
This book presents the recent approach, in which
mathematical mechanistic models are developed,
based on the physical phenomena, for the predic-
tion of two-phase flow behavior. The models can be verified and refined with
limited experimental data. However, as these models incorporate the physical
phenomena and the important flow variables, they can be extended to different
operational conditions and can enable scaleup with significant confidence.

Principles of Applied Reservoir Simulation,
3rd Edition
By John R. Fanchi
Completely revised and updated throughout, this
new edition of a GPP industry standard has
completely new sections on coalbed methane,
CO
2
sequestration (important for environmental
concerns), CO
2
Flood, more sophisticated pet-
rophysical models for geoscientists, examples of
subsidence, additional geomechanical calculations,
and much more. What makes this book so differ-
ent and valuable to the engineer is the accompany-
ing software, used by reservoir engineers all over
the world every day. The new software, IFLO (replacing WINB4D, in previous
editions), is a simulator that generates simulations of how the well can be tapped
and feeds this to the engineer in dynamic 3D perspective.
This book and software helps the reservoir engineer do his or her job on a daily
basis, better, more economically, and more efficiently. Without simulations, the
reservoir engineer would not be able to do his or her job at all, and the technol-
ogy available in this product is far superior to most companies internal simulation
software.

By Yakov Gelfgat, Mikahil Gelfgat, Yuri S.
Lopatin
Volume one of this two-volume set covers histor-
ical trends and two major aspects of drilling tech-
nologies downhole motors and oil well drilling
optimization (KTW Key Technological Wells
drilling method). Unlike the U.S. and other
countries, which use rotary drilling, the Russians
use downhole hydraulic and electrical motors
that power the bit downhole. Using a downhole
motor is more efficient, especially in hard formations. Advanced drilling
studies have long been conducted in the FSU and are important in reduc-
ing drilling costs in marginal reservoirs. This technology is beginning to gain
popularity in the U.S. and other countries.

broad topic. Even though concepts were pro-
posed and tried as early as the 1920s, most of the
SPE papers and well activity did not begin until
the mid-1990s. This reprint, with 17 papers and
more than 250 bibliography references, attempts
to cover all aspects of the technology, includ-
ing but not limited to performance prediction,
measurement, wellbore stability, well control,

Analyzing and Managing
Risky Investments
By John M. Campbell Jr., John M. Campbell
Sr., and Robert Campbell
This text reviews the classical principles used
to appraise investment opportunities. The first
five chapters introduce the investment guide-
lines used by petroleum decision makers. The
remaining text addresses the benefits and meth-
ods for directly incorporating risk perceptions
and management into the investment decision-
making process. Among the areas covered are
applying statistical principles to production, cost, price, and other inputs in
the net cash flow process, with detailed examples of each.

Data Mining: Applications
in the Petroleum Industry
By Georg Zangl and Josef Hannerer
The proliferation of data-gathering technologies
and instrumentation has led to the acquisition of
great volumes of data whose interpretation using
analytical mathematical approaches or history
matching with numerical simulators is often
unsuccessful, incomplete, and invariably only
partially satisfying. Data mining is an evolving
discipline that uses a series of modern tools
to extract hidden relationships and influences
embedded in the data.
This book, dealing with data mining in the petroleum industry, is a major step
toward the understanding of the exceptionally complex influences of the inher-
ently chaotic geology, lithology, geochemistry, fluid phase behavior, multiphase
flow, and other phenomena affecting petroleum exploration and production.

International exploration and production is chal-
lenging and exciting. Negotiating with gov-
ernments and understanding the dynamics of
their fiscal systems and/or production sharing
contracts can mean the difference between suc-
cess and failure.
Long-time industry consultant, negotiator and
lecturer Daniel Johnston provides an extremely
clear and practical perspective on international exploration economics and risk
analysis; petroleum fiscal system analysis and design; contract negotiations; and
economic, financial and accounting aspects of production sharing contracts
and royalty/tax systems.
International Exploration Economics, Risk, and Contracts Analysis is an anthol-
ogy of articles from Johnstons column in the Petroleum Accounting and

Hydrates of Hydrocarbons
By Yuri Makogon
Gas hydrates are solid crystalline compounds
of water and methane that are similar to snow
they form in and block gas wells and lines and
cause fouling of heat exchangers when the gas
is cooled. This new book addresses methods of
hydrate removal, and most importantly, preven-
tion of hydrate build-up.
Readers will find information specific to hydrate
formation in gas that includes: conditions and
area of hydrate formation; locating the hydrate-
carrying rock; estimating gas amounts in gas hydrate deposits; the role of
natural gas hydrates in global changes; the physical principles and models of
gas hydrate deposit development; results of the Messoyakhi gas hydrate field
development; and hydrates in space. New topics of using hydrate properties
for new technologies and production of gas from natural gas hydrate deposits
are also discussed.

Natural Gas Engineering Handbook
By Boyun Guo and Ali Ghalambor
Many studies have concluded that the major
source of energy for the global economy in the
first half on the 21st century will be natural
gas. With natural gas becoming more and more
important, there is an increasing demand for
information, yet less and less material is avail-
able on this subject. The Natural Gas Engineering
Handbook is the only book available that covers
this subject in a comprehensive and practical way,
including Processing, Pipeline, Production, and
Reservoir Engineering.
This book covers the full scope of natural gas engineering, from gas reservoir
engineering to gas production to gas processing. It adapts a computer-assisted
approach, which is current practice in the industry and is severely lacking in other
books on natural gas engineering.

Geostatistics is an increasingly important tool
for developing an integrated reservoir descrip-

the importance of geostatistics in improving
the reservoir characterization process, it does
not require any prior knowledge of statistics
or advanced mathematics. Emphasis is placed
on intuitive understanding of procedure rather
than on mathematical details. Each chapter has
an associated Appendix in which additional mathematical details are provided.
Several numerical and field examples, as well as a large number of illustrations,
are provided to explain the strengths and weaknesses of different methods.

Pore Pressure through Earth
Mechanical Systems
By Phil Holbrook
Earth mechanical systems present a new design
approach to drilling and subsurface engineering.
Earth mechanical systems are distinguished from
all other pore pressure prediction methods. This
book explains Earth mechanics as constitutive
pressure-stress/strain relationships, ultimately
relating rock properties directly to their in-situ
load environment. Emphasized are the mechani-
cal interactions between pore fluid pressure,
fracture propagation pressure, overburden, and average mineralogy and poros-
ity of sedimentary rocks. Included in each chapter are bibliographies and a
cross-referenced glossary of technical terms.

Shipping
Shipping times will vary, however, most domestic (U.S.) orders take 1-3
business days transit time while most international orders take 2-4 business
days transit time. Transit time refers to the time it takes for a carrier, such
as DHL, to deliver a package from our office to your location. An email
notification will be sent when your order ships, including the carrier and
tracking number for your package (when available).
Processing time from order reciept to shipment depends on the stock status of
the items in your order. If all items in your order are in stock, your order will
usually ship within 1-3 business days. If any items in your order are not in
stock, your order will usually ship in 5-7 business days. The total time required
to receive your order will be based on the processing time plus the transit time.
Please note that from time to time a product may go on backorder, which may
delay the processing of your order by several days or weeks.
Customs/Duties for Non-U.S. Orders
Orders may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once a
shipment reaches your country. The customer placing the order is considered
the importer of record and is responsible for any additional charges for customs
clearance. SPE cannot predict or control these charges. Customs policies vary
widely from country to country. Please contact your local customs office for
more information prior to placing an order.
Prices in this catalog are subject to change. Please refer to the SPE

software, OTC Proceedings, or career guidance aids. Booksellers interested in
