More jobs means a more secure future for
families in Chelsea and Fulham

Local MP, Greg Hands, has welcomed new figures showing that 345
fewer people are relying on Jobseekers Allowance in Chelsea and
Fulham, compared to this time last year. Since 2010, the number of
local people on unemployment benefits is down by 693 a 36% drop.
Additionally, the number of people in work in London as a whole is up
by 399,000 since 2010.

The creation of these new jobs as been helped, in part, by the
Employment Allowance, which reduces the cost to businesses of
employing people. The Employment Allowance, introduced by the
Conservative led Government in April, takes up to 2,000 off the
National Insurance bill of every employer, including all businesses and
charities.

The allowance means a business could now hire someone on
22,400 a year, or four people working full-time on the minimum
wage, without paying any employer national insurance at all. In total
up to 1.25 million employers will benefit from the allowance, with over
100,000 of these in London.

Furthermore, nationally employment is up by 1.8 million since the
election, and the private sector has created two million jobs since the
election. In the three months to April 2010, there were 28.842 million
people in employment. In the three months to May 2014 there were
30.643 million people in work.

Greg Hands said: Its excellent news that since 2010 there are 693
fewer people in Chelsea and Fulham relying on Jobseekers
Allowance. That means nearly 700 more people with the prospect of a
better and brighter future ahead of them.

This economic good news is not just confined to my constituency, but
is bringing benefits across the country. Im delighted that 1.8 million
more people across Britain are now in work than was the case under
the last Labour Government. As these figures show the
Conservatives long-term economic plan is working, cutting the tax on
jobs and backing local businesses to create more jobs. We need to
stick to that plan. Its the only way to ensure that we keep growing the
economy and creating jobs, so that more families can have the
security of a job and a regular pay packet.

Greg Hands meets K&C Council and TfL
over Crossrail 2 and makes consultation
submission

Chelsea and Fulham MP, Greg Hands, is continuing to represent the
views of local residents over potential new sites for a rail station in
Chelsea, as part of the planned Crossrail 2 underground railway line.

In recent weeks Greg has met with representatives of the Royal
Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) and Transport for
London (TfL) to provide much needed answers for local residents,
concerned about the location of a new station in the borough. Greg
has also made a formal submission to TfLs official consultation on the
matter.

In the last month Greg met Richard di Cani, the Director of Transport
Strategy and Planning at TfL, and Jonathan Bore, the Executive
Director for Planning and Borough Development at RBKC. They
provided answers to enquiries about the proposals made on behalf of
Gregs constituents.

The meeting focused on TfL consultation on three options for a
potential station in Chelsea: a station at Dovehouse Green, a station
further west at what is described as Chelsea West, and another
option that would bypass the borough altogether, i.e. to have no
Chelsea station at all.

During the meeting, TfL and RBKC explained that this was a
genuinely open consultation, designed to gauge the appetite for a
station at either site with no preconceived plans for where a station
would be. TfL also confirmed that the reason for this consultation was
to look at the concept of having a Crossrail 2 station in Chelsea, and
as such there are no definitive plans available for either site. TfL have
ruled out a number of other possible sites, including the Lots Road car
pound and an under-river station at Battersea Bridge due to practical
engineering considerations.

Since the start of this consultation, Greg has received a large volume
of correspondence from constituents with many differing viewpoints on
the three options. He also attended and addressed the Annual
General Meeting of the Cremorne Estate Residents Association on
7th July to listen to residents concerns, and made a pledge to those
attending to find out more about the proposed plans from TfL and
RBKC. Greg also attended TfLs consultation drop in session at
Chelsea Old Town Hall earlier this month, speaking with TfL officers,
local councillors and residents.

Greg subsequently met Councillor Nick Paget-Brown, Leader of
RBKC, in order to relay the strength of feeling of Cremorne residents
about the Chelsea West option, and what they believed to be a lack
of consultation, and even information.

Following these meetings, Greg made his own formal submission to
the consultation which is available to read here.

In his response, Greg explained that he supported the construction of
Crossrail 2, and looks forward to it bringing essential additional public
transport capacity to London, and to Chelsea in particular. Greg has
previously supported the principle of a new Chelsea-Hackney
underground line, now known as Crossrail 2, and featured this in his
2010 General Election campaign, and continues to support the idea of
a station in Chelsea.

However, in light of the meetings held with both TfL and the Council,
Greg has decided that there is not enough information to choose a
preferred site. He said As there are no detailed plans in place, I
cannot evaluate the potential effects of a station at either site on
surrounding residents. Nor can I assess the likely impact of the
construction of the station on the area in general, and the immediate
surroundings of each of the locations in particular.

Greg added I note there is significant opposition to each of the two
sites, yet the community in general supports the overall idea of a
station in Chelsea. I very much hope that the localised opposition to
each of the two sites does not lead to a decision being made to
support the third option, of having no station in Chelsea.

I trust that TfL and RBKC will work together to keep Chelsea
residents informed about any further developments in the future. I will
be following this debate very closely, and once more detailed plans
come forward, will be responding further in the future.

The consultation closed on 25
th
July. It is understood the Council has
decided to put its support behind the site originally proposed at
Dovehouse Green. We now await the publication of its results, which
is anticipated to be in September 2014. According to TfLs website,
there will be further stages of consultation in the future, based on
more detailed plans for whichever site is chosen.

A message from David Cameron:
I want to build a better future for Britain

More families with the security of a pay
packet each month. The best schools
and skills for young people. An
economy that delivers for people who
want to work hard and get on in life.

Since becoming Prime Minister in 2010,
I've been working through our long-term
economic plan to build a stronger, more
competitive economy and secure
Britain's future.

Our plan is working:

The deficit has been reduced by
more than a third, as we deal
with our debts and safeguard
our economy for the long term
We've frozen fuel duty and cut
income tax for over 25 million
people, helping you and your
family be more financially secure
Over 1.5 million new jobs have
been created, as we back small businesses and enterprise with
better infrastructure and lower jobs taxes
Welfare has been capped and immigration controlled, so our
economy works for those who play by the rules
Over 1.6 million new apprenticeships are giving young people a
good start in life

But there's still much more to do.

Road closures in Chelsea and Fulham for
Prudential Cycle Ride in London on
Sunday, 10th August

Residents and businesses should expect severe traffic and public
transport disruption on Sunday 10 August when amateur and
professional cyclists ride though the borough as part of the Prudential
RideLondon event.

Developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies, Prudential
RideLondon is a world-class festival of cycling taking place over the
weekend of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August 2014.

Roads in Kensington and Chelsea will be affected on Sunday 10
August when 24,000 amateur riders and 150 professional cyclists
follow a route from east London out to Surrey before returning to
London for a finish on The Mall.

The route enters the borough in Knightsbridge and travels along the
A4 before entering Hammersmith and Fulham. Cyclists will then come
back into the borough via King's Road, Ashburnham Road, Cremorne
Road, Cheyne Walk and Chelsea Embankment before an exciting
finish on The Mall.

Closing 100 miles of roads and bridges will have a major impact on
traffic, public transport and parking. It is not just the roads the cyclists
ride along that will be affected. Many other local roads will be closed
to traffic from the early hours of Sunday 10 August to allow the event
to pass safely through the borough. It is anticipated roads will remain
closed until the early evening. Vehicles parked on the route will be
removed. If you normally park your vehicle on any of the roads
affected you will need to make alternative arrangements on Sunday
10 August.

Roads along the route will be closed from 5am on Sunday 10 August
and will not fully reopen until the early evening.

In the borough Knightsbridge, Brompton Road and the Cromwell Road
will close at 5am and are not expected to open until approximately
3pm.

King's Road, Cheyne Walk and Chelsea Embankment are expected to
close at 7.30am and will remain closed until about 7pm.

For further information and advice about travel disruption go to
www.tfl.gov.uk/campaign/prudential-ridelondon/travel-disruption-
and-advice

Councillor Tim Coleridge, the Royal Borough of Kensington and
Chelsea's Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "Our experience from
last year's event suggests that major disruption is inevitable. There will
be local parking restrictions and road closures.

"I do urge residents and businesses to get this date into their diary to
make sure they are not caught out when the cyclists arrive on Sunday
10 August.

"Of course both the amateur event, which will raise an enormous
amount of money for good causes, and the professional race, will be
exciting spectacles. However, you simply cannot have an event of this
scale without it having an enormous impact on our roads.

"The best way to minimise inconvenience and disruption to your plans
is to be aware of the date and plan ahead."

More information about Prudential RideLondon and details of the final
route can be found on the organiser's website
