Scrambling Code Planning in

UMTS Networks
AMIT PATHAK
SCRAMBLING CODE PLANNER FOR UMTS

The UMTS Scrambling Code Planner is used to assign primary
scrambling codes to individual cells. Scrambling codes do not
affect the Simulation and Reports, but the tool is useful for
achieving code re-use efficiency in the network.

Code planning is required for the downlink scrambling codes to
ensure that code reuse is as efficient as possible. Interfering cells
should be assigned different scrambling codes. In addition ,
consideration should be given to limiting the number of code
groups and codes per group used by the neighboring cells.
The scrambling code schema allows you to create a range of code
groups and codes within a code group to plan in when using the
Scrambling Code Planner.

The potential number of code groups is 64 (0-63) and the number
of primary scrambling codes within each group is 8 (0-7).
Setting up a Range of Scrambling Codes (Schemas)
Creating a Schema

To create a schema:
1 From the Configuration menu, click UMTS Scrambling Code Schemas. This
picture shows an example of the Scrambling Code Schemas dialog box:
2 Click Add, and name the new schema.

3 Select the code groups that you want to use. When you select a code group, the
list of codes within the code group appears in the right pane. Select the codes for
each code group.

4 Click OK to commit the changes to the database and close the dialog box.
Deleting a Schema
You can delete schemas but if you do this, they cannot be restored. They are
deleted immediately and not moved to the wastebasket.
To delete a schema from the list:
1 From the Configuration menu, click UMTS Scrambling Code Schemas.

2 In the Scrambling Code Schema dialog box, select the schema that you wish to
delete and click Remove.

3 Click OK.
Running the Scrambling Code Planner

To use the Scrambling Code Planner:

1 Ensure you have:

Associated UMTS carriers with cells
Created predictions for the cells you want to include
Created neighbours (only if you are performing optimisation planning with
reference to the neighbouring cells)

2 If you want to plan codes by selecting a view shown in the Map View window,
ensure you have opened a Map View window displaying the region that you want
to use.
3 From the Tools menu, click UMTS Scrambling Code Planner.
4 .To define the area over which you want to plan codes click the Select View button then
click next.
5 . select the site filters to be included in the plan.
6. Click Next and set the options to plan the codes for each filter.
7. Click Next and set the required parameters for the scrambling code planner:
8 Click Finish to produce the Scrambling Code planner report.
About the Scrambling Code Report
Scrambling code reports are produced using the Scrambling Code Planner. The report shows all
the details that relate to the options you chose to plan. All columns can be sorted, and any
clashing codes are marked with the clashing codes symbol.
In the report, depending on your selected parameters, you can view:

The planned Code Groups and Codes for each cell included in the plan.

Any clashing codes or broken constraints.

In the panes on the right of the dialog box, you can also view further details (if
selected in the plan parameters) for any cell with clashing codes:
the clashing neighbors of the cell
the clashing cells that are adjacent to the cell (overlapping coverage)
the clashing cells that are near to the cell (code re-use distance)
the clashing cells that are on the same node as the cell

If you are satisfied with the planned assignments, you can save them onto the
CellParams tab of the cells in the Site Database.
