The 2013-14 school year saw the
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict put a major focus on vio-
lence and substance abuse pre-
vention as well as focus on char-
acter building.
With the new school year just
around the corner, the district
hopes to expand its programs
even further.
Chris Heilig, director of pro-
grams and planning for the dis-
trict, said each of the four high
schools is going to build off last
year's Defy the Issue programs
and continue promoting an anti-
substance abuse message within
its own communities.
Last year, Defy the Issue was
about education. The district
brought in Chris Herren, a for-
mer NBA player and heroin ad-
dict, to talk to the students about
the dangers of substance abuse.

ed the countys conversion to sin-
gle stream recycling is moving
forward, and with the official
start-up of the program just a
week away, residents still have
time to order an extra container
in which to store their recy-
clables.
Starting Sept. 1, residents will
be able to toss all their cans, bot-
tles, newspapers and cardboard,
into one container, Garganio
said.
These are dates that residents
need to circle on the calendar, he
continued. We know from phone
calls and emails that many resi-
dents are anxious to see single
stream get underway and, at the
same time others have contacted
us, asking if they can still request
an additional recycling cart.
Garganio said that renovations
to ready the Robert C. Shinn Re-
cycling Center in Westampton for
the single stream system are com-
plete. Installation of this new sys-
tem is being provided by general
contractor Dandrea Construction
of Berlin, which was awarded a
$13.7 million contract.
Dandreas contract also covers
the demolition and removal of ex-
isting equipment, as well as the
fabrication and delivery of the
new equipment by CP Manufac-
turing of California. Installation
work recently began, and is ex-
pected to continue through the
end of the year. But that wont
disrupt the plan to begin collect-
ing recyclables single stream
come Sept. 1.
Last year, freeholders initiated
an aggressive outreach program,
asking residents to decide if they
would need an additional cart,
giving them a choice of three dif-
ferent sizes and also providing ad-
vice on how to decide if they
needed another cart.
Residents in 32 municipalities
requested more than 24,000 addi-
tional carts or roughly 20 percent
more than the 122,000 carts now
in use. That information proved
useful in placing an order for ad-
ditional containers. However, it is
clear there are still residents who

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!
The Tabernacle School District staff mem-
bers are extremely excited for the return of
our students. Your children, our students,
are the reason we work so hard to prepare
for the opening of school. We see your chil-
dren off at the end of each school year as
they look forward to their next grade level,
their transition from Tabernacle Elemen-
tary to the Kenneth R. Olson Middle
School, or even continuing onward to
Seneca High School. However, seeing their
return each September is so exciting. All
of our hard work in preparing to make
their first day a great start to a new school
year is priceless! Like us, hopefully you
have recharged your batteries, sharpened
your pencils and re-
supplied your chil-
dren with what
they will need to
start the new
school year. Sum-
mer is a wonderful
time, but like you,
we are all ready to
move into the start
of a new school
year.
Summer seemed
shorter than usual
to us this year
than previous
years, probably be-
cause it was! School ended late last year on
Thursday, June 26 due to one of the worst
winters in recorded history. As a result,
parents and students should pay attention
to the districts new calendar for the 2014-
2015 school year, which will utilize school
holidays and spring recess in the event the
school needs to make up days missed due
to inclement weather. The school calendar
for this school year will allow the school
year to end in a reasonable time. Neverthe-
less, the staff and administration have
made excellent use of the time available to
them this summer to prepare the schools
for students on opening day, Wednesday,

ne more week. Thats all that
we have left of summer. Tech-
nically, there are about four
weeks left, but in the lives of us New
Jersey residents, next Wednesday
when most schools go back in session
for the 2014-2015 year marks the end
to our summer.
No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun OK, maybe thats a bit dra-
matic.
But its not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, theres plenty to
be excited about, and weve been hard
at work covering this excitement al-
ready.
Our senior associate editor, Nick
Cohen, loves this time of year. Thats
because the end of August means the
start of one of his passions covering
sports. Nick has been on the summer
sports camp trail for a week or so now,
and he will continue to be out and
about on local fields as our high school
teams continue to prepare for the up-
coming season.
Soon, youll see some of the photos
Nick and our other editors have taken
at these camps. Soon, youll begin read-
ing more about the teams, players and
coaches who are involved in the games
they love. And soon, in two weeks to be
exact, youll be receiving The Suns
regular High School Fall Sports Pre-
view guide.
Our fall sports preview special sec-
tion is a stand-alone piece previewing
each high school fall sport, with full
schedules for the entire season and fea-
ture stories as well.
Nick is reaching out to every high
school coach and athletic director for
the fall season for the section. But
were calling on parents, coaches and
even players to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of up-
coming issues of The Sun, as youll
soon see. And not just high school var-
sity sports. We want to cover the JV
and freshmen teams, as well as all the
community sports teams.
But we cant do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended com-
munity.

Issue was to bring that issue to
the forefront, Heilig said.
This year, Heilig said the stu-
dents will continue to be proac-
tive in this respect. Each school
will continue to participate in
Project Purple, where they take
an oath to not use drugs and alco-
hol.
There are also programs where
students are teaching their
younger peers about substance
abuse. The Seneca Drug Squad is
a group of students who have
taught younger students in local
communities a similar lesson
they have learned from Herren
and Defy the Issue programs.
All of these students are spe-
cially trained to convey that same
message, Heilig said.
Moving forward, the district is
looking to expand a number of
school-specific programs, such as
the Green Dot program at
Shawnee High School. Green Dot
is a nationwide organization ded-
icated to promoting non-violence
through local communities.
Shawnee collaborates with
Contact of Burlington County for
the program, Heilig said.
Shawnee is continuing to par-
ticipate in Green Dot in 2014-15.
Heilig said the district might look
at expanding it to the other three
high schools sometime in the fu-
ture.
The district's proactive ap-
proach has paid off in a number
of accolades. At last weeks board
of education meeting, Heilig an-
nounced the Anti-Defamation
League has given all four high
schools a No Place for Hate desig-
nation for the second consecutive
year, which he said is indicative
of how much the district focuses
on character and community
building, especially from the per-
spective of the Anti-Defamation
League.
This is just part of what con-
tributes to the culture of the
schools, Heilig said. It really
works well with our other sys-
temic initiatives.
The district hopes to continue
expanding its Senior Day of Serv-
ice projects this year. Last year,
seniors participated in projects at
90 different sites throughout
South Jersey.
The projects were not just lim-
ited to Lenape, Cherokee,
Shawnee and Seneca. The Se-
quoia Alternative Program also
participated in a variety of activi-
ties last year, including work at
the Dr. James Still House in Med-
ford and the Animal Adoption
Center in Lindenwold.
Matt Webb, the director for the
Sequoia Alternative Program,
said the feeling of community
and service has greatly helped the
students participating in the pro-
gram.
While there are no plans for the
district to bring in a speaker such
as Herren this year, Heilig be-
lieves the students are ready to
take many of the messages they
learned last year and further
apply them this year.

During the summer, school
staff participated in a number of
professional development oppor-
tunities. Elementary teachers in
grades three through five made
upgrades to the districts lan-
guage arts curriculum. In addi-
tion, key staff and all administra-
tors were trained in CPR and in
the use of Automatic External
Defibrillators as part of the new
Janets Law requirements for
September. New Jerseys Janets
Law requires all schools to in-
crease the number of onsite
AEDs as well as to train staff in
their use in the event of an emer-
gency. Our school nurses, Eileen
Latini and Barbara Wisniewski,
were instrumental in putting an
AED emergency plan in place to
ensure our schools meet the re-
quirements of this law. Further-
more, office staff and administra-
tors received training in software
upgrades for improving efficien-
cy in school operations as well as
in the use of a new community
global communication system
called School Messenger. School
Messenger will allow the school
to broadcast emergency informa-
tion, school closings, as well as
school updates to parents in a
more efficient manner. The sys-
tem interfaces with the districts
phone system, Facebook page,
email system, student and parent
databases and the school website.
We are looking forward to en-
hancing our ability to communi-
cate with our parents and com-
munity more often, effectively
and efficiently. Administrators
oversaw the review and revision
of curriculum, facilitated such
upgrades as replacing cabling in
both schools to improve the dis-
tricts technology network and
lay the groundwork for future
phone system and security up-
grades, installed Smartboard
technology in 16 classrooms, and
restored and repaired school fa-
cilities and the districts fleet of
buses.
Tabernacle School District,
like any organization, experi-
ences changes that warrant the
hiring of new personnel. This
year was no different. In order for
the schools to be ready for stu-
dents, the district hired two bus
drivers, two educational special-
ists for the autistic in Nicole
Langton and Christian Chapman,
two special education teachers,
Brianna McCarthy, sixth grade
and Meghan Valente, preschool, a
music teacher, John Reem, a facil-
ities and transportation manager,
Robert Hogan, and a director of
curriculum and instruction,
Christine Skinner. Every year
we need to reassess our staffing
needs to meet the needs of stu-
dents and support educational
programming. Like in the past,
this year we are extremely im-
pressed with the level of highly
qualified staff continuing with us
as well as the new staff joining
our schools.
Some of the exciting initiatives
we will continue to pursue this
school year, on behalf of your
children, include the updating of
the districts language arts litera-
cy curriculum, the use of the
newly adopted district bench-
mark assessment tool known as
the Measures of Academic
Progress for measuring student
academic growth and program ef-
fectiveness, the integration of
technology into all our class-
rooms for students and teachers,
the iSTEM or integrated Science
Technology Engineering and
Mathematics program at the mid-
dle school, as well as the develop-
ment of effective academic inter-
ventions for students struggling
to meet their learning goals.
Tabernacle Schools continue to
strive to provide a quality educa-
tion that addresses the needs of
the whole child, while at the same
time providing your child with
the groundwork for future suc-
cess. I want to welcome you all to

brings with it a 10 percent in-
crease in recycling volume. This
means tipping fee savings for the
towns, with reduced waste ton-
nage being hauled to the landfill.
Single stream also means fewer
trucks and smaller crews will be

savings. Additionally, while re-
ducing workers on the road, we
will be adding jobs inside the
plant for more individuals with
disabilities. Garganio said that
the county anticipates recaptur-
ing the costs of the facility modi-
fications and new equipment in
12 years.
With the existing equipment
approaching an age of 20 years,
and expected to be in need of re-
placement soon, the timing for
this conversion is right, he said.
Not only that, we take some
pride in noting that this entire
project involves American-made
products.
Shamong is not currently in-
volved in the countys existing
cart program. Residents will con-
tinue to use their existing recy-
cling buckets for single-stream
collection.

County launched a redesigned
and enhanced website that signif-
icantly improves resident engage-
ment and transparency.
We have redesigned the coun-
tys website to encourage resident
interaction, increase government
transparency and to better in-
form our residents about all that
the county has to offer, said Free-
holder Director Bruce Garganio.
The new Burlington County
website includes the following
site enhancements:
Resident engagement:
Users can access updated infor-
mation about services and county
functions and register for updat-
ed information on the site, re-
ceive RSS feeds, share with social
media, sign up for news and cal-
endar alerts and get notifications.
Mobile app: The website is
now optimized for smartphones
and tablets.
Increased transparency:
More documents are online with
increased visibility and are easily
located.
Alert system: Now resi-
dents can be alerted to important
messages and information easily
by signing up for alerts and by a
red alert beacon on the top of the
webpage.
Improved structure and
navigation: More spacious and
colorful layout that includes an
intuitive navigation with stan-
dardized menu structures.
In building the new website,
we sought to provide a better on-
line experience for our resi-
dents, Garganio said.

lishment of an Intergovernmen-
tal Task Force charged with expe-
diting the countys new
Workforce Development Initia-
tive.
Since its unveiling in January
of this year, the Workforce Devel-
opment Initiative has been a top
priority of this freeholder board
and for me, Garganio said.
Through my professional experi-
ence as a union carpenter, I have
seen firsthand the importance of
matching job training and educa-
tion to the specific and ever-
evolving needs of our local busi-
nesses. The purpose of this initia-
tive is to do just that and
to do it in a coordinated
manner.
To that end, I am establishing
an Intergovernmental Task
Force, which I will personally
chair as freeholder director, Gar-
ganio continued. Together, we
on this task force will be responsi-
ble for expediting this initiative,
ensuring that it receives top pri-
ority and eliminating any obsta-
cles or red tape that it might
face.
