BRICK In all of the 10 years that Chris Stephan has
owned the K & D Gulf station on Burnt Tavern Road,
Monday marked the first time that the business was
held up.
But what surprised Stephan even more than the bra-
zen, daytime robbery at his service station on Monday
was the fact that a knife-wielding bandit stabbed the
station attendant as he was in the process of handing
over about $400 to him, Stephan said.
Im surprised he would actually go through with it
and stab him, Stephan said of the bandit. To go ahead
and do it, thats scary.
Stephan, who declined to identify the victim, said it
did not appear the wound was life-threatening, but he
said it could have been. Stephan said the victim was
stabbed in the abdomen, on the right side.
One inch higher and it was near the heart, Stephan
said.
Afterward, police scoured the area with dogs and the
assistance of a state helicopter, but as of late afternoon
on Monday, no one was in custody.

NEW YORK Structural problems in the 104-year-old
Hudson River rail tunnels were exacerbated by 13 mil-
lion gallons of salt water that flooded them after super-
storm Sandy, an event that Amtrak officials confirm
will require closing the old tubes for a year for a com-
plete rebuild.
For the first time since AmtrakPresident Joe Board-
man said that the old tunnels, used by thousands of com-
muters a day, had 20 years remaining before theyd
have to be closed for repairs, officials of the national
passenger railroad provided details about the extent of

Disobedient students. Heavy workloads. Standardized testing mandates. Public disdain
for the profession. Teachers and experts say these are just a few of the factors that send
educators running from careers in education. About 13 percent of the nations 3.4 mil-
lion teachers change jobs or leave the profession each year, at a cost of up to $2.2 billion
nationwide, according to a recently released report.
