CALI, Colombia - Colombia's Clara Guerrero broke the Pan
American Bowling Confederation Women's Championships sin-
gles record en route to the gold medal and in her home country.
Guerrero blasted a six-game total of 1,498 (249.67 average) to
earn her second career gold medal in the PABCON Women's
Championships. Team USA's Kelly Kulick earned the silver and
teammate Liz Johnson took the bronze at the Cali Bowling
Coliseum.
After starting with games of 233, 290 and 223, Guerrero closed
out her singles event strong with 248, 259 and 245 to set the score
to beat on the first squad.
It was the first individual PABCON gold medal in Guerrero's
career. She won the doubles gold medal in 2001 with Paola Gomez
and has earned seven silver medals and two bronze medals over the
years.
"It feels incredible to win the gold medal in singles with my par-
ents, my brother and the people who always support me behind
me," said Guerrero, who beat the previous record of 1,482 set by
Team USA's Liz Johnson in 2008. "The level of this tournament is
quite high, so I'm very pleased and quite excited."
The United States earned the second through sixth positions in
the standings with Kulick leading the way posting a 1,387 second-
place finish. Johnson totaled 1,369 to finish third.
Missy Parkin finished in fourth place with 1,340, Shannon
Pluhowsky was fifth with 1,340 and Danielle McEwan finished
in a tie for sixth place with 1,314. Shannon O'Keefe earned
14th with 1,262.
Four countries will qualify for the 2015 Pan American Games
this week as part of the PABCON Women's Championships.
The combined all-events total of the top two bowlers from each
non-qualified country will determine the top four that advance.
Eight countries have already qualified for the Pan American
Games, which will feature 14 countries. Argentina, Brazil,
Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Venezuela
have already secured spots.
There are seven countries competing in the PABCON
Women's Championships that have yet to qualify and four will
earn spots. Those countries are Aruba, the Bahamas, the United
States, Guatemala, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Dominican
Republic.
With Kulick and Johnson's strong start, it put Team USA atop
the leaderboard in the race to qualify for the Pan American
Games.

Many a parent worries when a
youngster becomes too interested
in a sport, any sport.
They feel that at times a sport
can have a distracting influence
on youthful participants when he
or she should be concentrating
more on the basics of education.
If the sport is bowling, theres
little need for concern. Bowling
enthusiasts must learn scoring
and the math necessary. The
numbers always need close atten-
tion, and when a youngster
becomes involved with averages,
high games, high series, point sys-
tems and the many other statis-
tics connected with bowling, they
learn to figure quickly and accu-
rately, just to keep things honest.
They also are exposed to various
computer systems.
They want to be able to decipher
entry blanks, rule books, to
understand them, to read
accounts of leagues and tourna-
ments and the exploits of their
bowling heroes in newspapers,
bowling publications and maga-
zines. Whether they know it or
not, they read more, become bet-
ter readers, and more acquainted
with words.
They learn how to win, to lose, to
organize, and how important
team efforts are, and how it is just
as important to foster individual
goals, and they learn about pres-
sure without undue pressure on
them.
Boys and girls interested in
bowling cant bowl all they want
because most allowances wont
stretch that far. Many become a
little more eager to do some extra
chores around the house to earn
some extra money to bowl some
extra games. Some take on a
part-time job, and some pick up
pin money by keeping score or
helping at various bowling tour-
naments. They learn more of the
value of money when they want
that new ball or bag or shoes.
Youngsters interested in bowling
cant help but have their compet-
itive juices and spirit aroused.
And if theyre not good bowlers
they can become involved with
the organizational structure, cre-
ating and conducting and publi-
cizing events. In all ways the
sport offers a social outlet and an
education, because bowling is a
mirror of lifes success and fail-
ure, and youngsters can relate
much of what they do in bowling
to other experiences.
Few young bowlers get into
trouble, a tribute to the juniors
who bowl, the people who teach
and guide them, and the bowling
centers in which they bowl. Ask
any judge. Most bowling centers
welcome juniors with open arms,
but dont baby them, and insist
upon proper dress and actions.
Young people learn about rules,
respect for other peoples proper-
ty and also about discipline. But
even more should and could be
done to attract and keep more
young bowlers.
One of the great beauties of
bowling for youngsters is that it
will always be there. Some bowl
the rest of their lives. Many go
through gaps, absences from
bowling because of schooling,
jobs, and marriage or family obli-
gations. But most come back at
one time or another, the fun and
lessons they learned in bowling
taken out of storage.
Books and bowling do get
together. Math, history, finance,
competition, satisfaction and an
atmosphere answering a social
need with a physical outlet are
combined.
Mothers and fathers always will
worry. Those fears are cut to a
minimum when boys and girls
from tots to teens discover bowl-
ing as an outlet.
And you never have to look very
far to find a bowling center.
