Issues and Directions
Objectives
With the focus on architecture of east coast region, the
seminar would have the following objectives:
➜➜ To identify the possible architectural identity for the
region.
➜➜ To recognise the traditional and vernacular
architecture of the region as possible contributor to
the architectural language of east coast region.
➜➜ To summarise existing approaches and practises
that have been used in shaping the architectural
identity of the region.
➜➜ To seek the possible architectural education
direction which is relevant for the region.
➜➜ To identify the contribution of architecture to the
development of construction industries in the region.

Pengkalan Chepa, Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Background
The East Coast of Malaysia covers the states of Kelantan,
Terengganu and Pahang. A development plan by
Malaysian Government becomes the basis in guiding the
progress of this region for the next 12 years. This is aimed
at transforming the region to be a major international and
local tourism destination, an exporter of resource-based
and manufactured products, a vibrant trading centre, and
an infrastructure and logistics hub. The region’s distinctive
natural resources, culture and heritage will form the basis
for transforming the economy into one that is dynamic
and competitive in light of greater regional and global
competition and economic liberalization.
One of the key enablers for the development plan is real
estate development. Property and construction will be a
focus to prepare sufficient residential, leisure, commercial
and industrial properties to meet the region’s economic
demands and growth. In meeting these demands, the
architectural values of buildings constructed should be
significant to the region identity, culture, community and
environment.
The importance of architecture in creating and preserving
the region identity and shaping the community is our point
of departure in organising a seminar about architecture
with regards to current development of the region. The
seminar also tries to address the issues and identify the
possible architectural education direction for the region.

Seminar Poster
We also encourage submission for seminar posters
reflecting the seminar objectives.
➜➜ Posters could also reflect issues of sustainable or
regional architecture.
➜➜ Posters must be A1 in size.
➜➜ All posters should be electronically submitted
preferably via e-mail. All printing matters are to be
handled by the seminar secretariat.
➜➜ Places are limited. Posters are to be chosen based
on their relevances to the objectives of the seminar.
