Welcome
The Arun Yacht Club is a friendly, family-focused community sailing club
situated on the west bank of the River Arun in Littlehampton, West Sussex.
The Club specialises in dinghy and cruiser racing as well as providing
a base for cruising sailor’s intent on exploring the South Coast and
beyond.

Its facilities include a large car park, secure dinghy pen, moorings
for approximately 100 cruisers, a dedicated training block and a
clubhouse with changing rooms for ladies and gentlemen. The
clubhouse boasts a galley, well stocked bar, and a large lounge
area (for specific opening times, click on Social). A balcony
overlooking the river is very popular during the summer
months.

The AYC caters year-round for a wide range of sailing interests,

from the thrill of dinghy and cruiser racing to the more relaxed
atmosphere of organised club cruises. We also hold frequent
social events to suit all tastes. For those embarking on the
road to sailing proficiency, the club is an RYA-recognised
teaching establishment, and our training staff would be
pleased to discuss any aspect of training with you. The Club
has a vibrant family oriented atmosphere and encourages
cadets to become fully involved in club activities.

Club History
The Arun Yacht Club was founded in 1956 as a dinghy sailing club and
initially used an old motor torpedo boat, Lisboa, as its clubhouse. To
this day, the club retains Lisboa as its radio call sign. The first club
race took place in the river on 29th April, 1956.

The foundations of the existing clubhouse were laid in 1960. The

first set of pontoons was established in 1974, replacing the piles
and mooring buoys that had been used beforehand. In 1981,
the present moorings were installed and the clubhouse was
enlarged.

In recent years, the club has developed further to support

cruising racing as well as dinghy racing. The club has around
500 members and continues to develop and thrive into the
21st century.

 Dinghy Racing
AYC is a sea-sailing club with the fallback of river sailing if conditions at sea
are unsuitable. There is a busy year-round programme of dinghy racing:
sea sailing from Easter to Christmas, with river sailing from Christmas to
Easter. Based inside Littlehampton harbour, launching from the secure
dinghy compound is over a firm sandy beach into the river Arun, and
from there it is a short sail through the harbour arms to the open sea.

Racing at sea is run from the club’s committee boat with safety
support provided by two RIBs. The club runs PY racing for all comers.
While a good number of classes are represented at the club, the
two-man RS400 and one-man Laser are the most popular designs.
The programme comprises various racing series for club trophies
as well as several one-off and novelty races. There is a strong
emphasis on support for cadets, which includes a dedicated
summer cadet regatta.

The club has been involved in top-flight dinghy racing since its
inception more than 50 years ago, and hosts at least one major
open meeting or national championship event every year. For
2009 this will be the RS500 National Championships.

As well as dinghy sailing, the club also has an active cruiser

racing fleet, and many of the dinghy sailors enjoy the
opportunity to crew the cruiser-racers. All racing at the club is
fiercely competitive, but no matter how hot the action on the
water, good humour always prevails in the club bar after the
boats are packed away.

Cruiser Racing
Arun Yacht club (AYC) has a fine tradition in cruiser racing, with a
dozen or so boats making up the cruiser fleet. The club has moorings
for approximately 100 bilge keelers/lifting keels with all the usual
pontoon facilities as well as an excellent bar and galley nearby in the
clubhouse.

The club hosts a busy calendar of club races with gaps to take in
racing events up and down the coast, such as the Escape Race,
the Round the Island Race and the Sussex Combined Yacht Clubs
Regatta. The club prides itself on success at such events, which
comes from knowledge sharing and team spirit.

This year, club racing will contain mixture of shorter round-

the-cans races and longer passage races. Races are keenly
contested but there is always advice being offered to new
racers and to more experienced racers who may not know the
hazards outside Littlehampton.

We welcome racers of all levels and experience, as well as

individuals who’d like to get to know racing by volunteering
to crew. If you’d like a taste of cruiser racing, AYC is the place
for you!

Training Centre
The AYC is an RYA-recognised training centre and offers a variety of RYA
powerboat, sailing and shore based training courses. We also offer
specialised non-RYA courses that draw upon the considerable dinghy
and cruiser racing expertise of our longer-serving members.

Courses are selected to support the club’s sailing activities and

to satisfy our objective to promote sailing to cadet and adult
beginners and to develop racing expertise.

We also provide a number of courses that are orientated towards

our cruising members. The courses provide support in terms of
navigation, seamanship, and specialised knowledge.

Social & Events
Arun Yacht Club has an active and forward thinking Social Committee
that puts together a full programme of events throughout the year.
Events vary from black-tie dinners through theme nights and quiz
nights to discos for cadet members. Every month has a night to
remember!

Our full-time Chef and Stewards are always on hand to provide

a warm welcome to new and old members alike. Why not come

 Clubhouse
Arun Yacht Club provides catering at the weekends and there are
snacks from the Bar during the week. We have a minimum of four
major Dinner events during the year, usually black tie or Cowes
rig, which are well attended by our members and Associate
Members.

Arun Yacht Club has a well-stocked Bar and is open lunchtimes

and evenings. We have a schedule of Winter and Summer
Opening hours, which slightly vary during the year.

The Clubhouse provides hot water showers for members and

The Traditional Way

The Arun Yacht Club is located on the west bank of the River Arun,
on the opposite side to the town of Littlehampton. Access is via
Ferry Road, which is a turning south off the A259 Bognor Road
approximately half a mile to the west of the bridge over the River
Arun (signposted to Rope Walk, West Beach, Littlehampton
Marina, and Arun Yacht Club). Proceed along Ferry Road until
almost the end and take the turning right into Rope Walk.
Proceed to end of Rope Walk and proceed through the narrow
entrance, passing alongside the golf course and up a ramp
where the Club and its car park will be found immediately on
your left-hand side.

How To Find Us
From the North via A24
Follow the A24 southwards to Findon, turn right A280 Long Furlong Road until you reach the
A27 at Clapham. Join the A27 towards Arundel, at the Lyminster junction, filter left, signposted
Littlehampton. Over the level crossing until you reach the roundabout at the junction with the
A259. Turn right, after 1/2 a mile Tesco Superstore will be on left. At Tesco roundabout turn
right, A259 towards Bognor Regis. Cross the River Arun bridge turn immediately left into
Ferry Road. Follow the straight for 1/2 mile until the T-junction, turn right signposted Rope
Walk, over the humps and you will see the Club car park on the right hand side.
From the West via A259
Travelling eastwards from Bognor Regis and Felpham stay on the A259 until you see Bairds
Farm shop on the right. Continue along the A259 up to the next roundabout at Climping.
Go straight over the roundabout and after about 300 yards turn right into Ferry Road,
follow A24 directions.
From the East via A259
Travelling westwards from Worthing on the A259, head towards Littlehampton and Bognor
Regis until you see the Tescos superstore on your left hand side. Follow A24 directions

Our well stocked Pro shop is run by PGA professional Stuart Fallow. We have many top brands of golfing
equipment, clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Club makes include main dealerships
with Cutter & Buck and Ping ,with many other ranges in store. Even if you can’t see what you are looking
for, Stuart can order and provide clubs within 48 hours, and will price-match all other local stockists.
Many brands of gents and ladies clothing are available throughout the changing seasons, as well as
buggies and electric trolleys available for hire.
Stuart has been our Professional at Littlehampton for the last three years, having moved here from Hayling
Island. Lessons are readily available but booking is required particularly throughout the summer months.
Fees range from £17.50 for 30 minutes to £30.00 for an hour. Playing lessons and block sessions are also
on offer, as well as his regular Thursday and Sunday coaching clinics for our growing Junior golfers.

 The Clubhouse
Built in 1986 to replace the previous Clubhouse lost to fire, Littlehampton Golf Club now has a splendid environment in which to
welcome the golfer to the sanctuary of the 19th hole. Designed on three levels, the views from the triple aspect bar area and top floor
are forever changing from dawn `til dusk across the links, the River Arun and in the distance the famous South Downs.
We have both formal and informal bars, well stocked with a wide range of wines, beers, spirits and non alcoholic beverages. What
better way to round of a days golfing than to relax amongst the comfort and ambience of our lounges, enjoying a well earned drink.
Our catering team, led by James Appleton, offer a varied and excellent menu from a choice of light snacks to full three course meals
to suit all palates. Themed events include Summer Balls, Barbeques, Quiz Nights, Curry Evenings, Dinner Dances and many more.
In addition to spacious first class changing facilities, we have a Snooker room with two high quality tables, and a large meeting room
to hold various events such as Bridge and Bowls, and which can also be adapted for indoor coaching sessions in the winter months.
Littlehampton Golf Club has become very popular over the years as the perfect venue for weddings and functions. Our experience
in organising the perfect event is matched only by the hospitality and meticulous attention to detail.

Hole 17 505 Yards, Par 5
A real birdie chance for the better player, but into wind this hole can prove a drastically
different proposition. Coming in from the left with your second offers the greater
angle as you can play away from the three greenside bunkers.
Hole 18 404 Yards, Par 4
A fitting eighteenth hole where anything is possible and the right hand side fairway
bunkers need to be respected. An accurate approach is required to hit the final
green, the longest on the golf course. Miss the target and you will need to work hard
to get up and down, often watched by the inhabitants of the imposing triple aspect
Clubhouse.

Hole 13 374 Yards, Par 4
A good drive down the left of fairway leaves the ideal approach route into number thirteen. Though by no means a long
hole, many a golfer can succumb to a well-placed pin position on the top level of another very challenging green.
Hole 14 390 Yards, Par 4
Finding the fairway is of enormous benefit here, where you will require a precise second to a long green. The
positioning of the bunker in the middle of the fairway can cause many to come up short, and if that does not get you,
there are two more well placed waiting at greenside.
Hole 15 341 Yards, Par 4
An excellent opportunity to pick up shots presents itself on this short par four, but so too does the chance to derail a
good round. Big hitting can get you very near to the green, but go left off the tee and the bunker and bushes are in
play, go too far right and the Rife offers a watery grave.
Hole 16 152 Yards, Par 3
Miss the short sixteenth and you are most likely to find one of five bunkers. Worse still, the nearby road and Out of
Bounds on the left can enter your mind as you glimpse the sanctuary of the Clubhouse.

Hole 9 371 Yards, Par 4
With the wind off the beach, avoiding the bunker on the right off the tee is paramount here if
you are to have a comfortable shot in to another well-guarded green.
Hole 10 365 Yards, Par 4
The tenth hole approaches the furthest point from our Clubhouse with Out of Bounds running
along the left-hand side. Find the fairway and avoid the greenside bunker, and this can yield
a good birdie opportunity.
Hole 11 154 Yards, Par 3
A short par three where, if you miss the target, you will face a testing up and down from the
hollows, or from one of three awaiting greenside bunkers.
Hole 12 410 Yards, Par 4
Now turn for the long march home, and you are about to be severely tested. A good drive is
required to miss the bunker on the right. A long par four for the men, with a rolling green, a par
here is very welcome.

Hole 5 493 Yards, Par 5
Turning back southwards, another par five somewhat shorter in length, with a gentle dog-leg to the right.
Whilst the bigger hitters can reach in two, a sloping green ensures they still have to work hard for a birdie.
Hole 6 183 Yards, Par 3
The second of 5 par threes at Littlehampton, the sixth requires both accuracy and distance control. Come
up short and you will encounter a raised green, go too long and you may be left with a tricky downhill chip
or putt. Bunkers on both sides can also snare seemingly good tee shots.
Hole 7 381 Yards, Par 4
Avoid the imposing fairway bunker off the tee and you should be left with a straight forward approach to
the green. Take a brief moment to enjoy views across Climping beach, the harbour skyline and the famous
South Downs away in the distance.
Hole 8 188 Yards, Par 3
A delightful par three, the longest on the golf course, demanding a crisply struck tee shot. Don’t relax when
you do find the apparent safety of the putting surface, as this is a notoriously tricky green on which to hole
a putt.

The Course
Littlehampton Golf course is challenging and a reasonable level of ability is required to enjoy its design
and presentation. Here our Pro gives hole by hole tips to help you get the most out of your round.
Hole 1 420 Yards, Par 4
A formidable opening hole which can play deceptively long when played into the wind. Two deep
bunkers short of the putting surface demand an accurate approach to a long green, which can prove
harder to hit due to the sloping surrounds.
Hole 2 366 Yards, Par 4
Hold the fairway and you are left with a direct route to the green. Judging the approach will require
good distance control particularly in a crosswind as the hole runs parallel to the shoreline.
Hole 3 177 Yards, Par 3
An extremely challenging short hole for all standards of play. Greenside bunkers left and right swallow
even the slightest miss-hit and a par here is highly regarded.
Hole 4 552 Yards, Par 5
The longest hole on the course, the 4th is marshalled by a series of bunkers along the right-hand side.
A solid par five off the back tees, it demands an accurate third to a fairly shallow green.
