Introduction
DW Legacy Design
® Our firm is committed to creating distinctive golf courses that meet the needs of
today’s golfer that are environmentally sustainable. We seek to infuse every project
with a balance of environmental sensitivity, community connections, artistic beauty
and economic viability. This proprietary comprehensive approach is called DW Legacy
Design®. Golf courses that achieve this harmony are enduring places that make a
difference for our clients, society and the well-being of the planet. These are places
that leave a legacy for future generations.

1
Golf Design Philosophy
Collaboration
At Design Workshop, we believe in collaboration. Our golf team benefits from the
larger group of the entire firm. Our golf design projects are developed through a
process that involves planners, landscape architects and, of course, golf designers
to ensure the overall plan is comprehensively conceived and implemented.

Design Style
Our philosophy is humble and thoughtful. Some architects stand by a minimalist
design philosophy while others impose their individual style onto the land,
regardless of the native landscape. We believe intense and sensitive analysis of the
land dictates a style for each individual course we design. Some parcels of land
require little earth-moving as a result of their inherent natural beauty. More often
today, new golf properties have fewer ‘God-given’ golf natural features and therefore
require a more creative vision and physical shaping. In both scenarios, the existing
landscape remains the foundation for our design. Even the simplest landscapes have
unique features that may include a small mound or an unexpected view that can be
highlighted to create a distinct and memorable golf experience. If a site calls for it,
we are not timid about moving and shaping the earth. We are also confident enough
to leave it alone. The ultimate goal is to forge the best golf experience possible. Every
constraint is a design opportunity we utilize to create memorable golf courses.

2
Environment and Sustainability
Sustainable golf course development
involves meeting critical standards
in three major areas: planning and
design, construction and maintenance.
Design Workshop specializes in
environmental sensitivity in planning
and design, with extensive experience
in construction Best Management
Practices. We keep current with the
new technologies in all three areas.

We also employ a series of

environmentally integrated golf Bio-filter stormwater treatment – The Glacier Club
design systems that ensure every
site is treated as carefully as possible
through the development and life of a
course. Our process includes constant
referral to cutting-edge practices
researched by the golf industry’s main
organizations, including the Golf
Course Superintendents Association
of America, United States Golf
Association and Audubon International.
Using our experience, we design
courses to fit naturally into the
environment as if they have existed for
centuries. Simply stated, our courses Wildlife corridor – Lodestone Golf Club
do not harm the environment.

Often during golf course development projects, the planner, golf course
designer and landscape architect have conflicting opinions or values which
lead to a compromised final product. Design Workshop is a golf course design,
landscape architecture and land planning firm, and can therefore provide a
full spectrum of services to complete complex golf development projects. We
specialize in combining these services resulting in a greater, more balanced
golf development project. Additionally, we provide these services a la carte. Golf course landscape and planting design

Design Team
Although our core team consists of three key golf architects, our overall breadth
of experience is vastly larger. Each of our golf projects is seen, critiqued and
molded by dozens of fellow designers at Design Workshop who are more
broadly focused on a variety of planning and landscape architecture projects.
The result is a much more thoughtful, cohesive and integrated design. This
means our projects are approached comprehensively and are guaranteed to
have the maximum value designed into not only the golf course, but also
the master plan. Residential premiums, hotel premiums, views and open
space, garner that same design rigor and exposure to broader critique.

Process
We uncover the challenges and opportunities that distinguish each project and
work with clients to envision alternate scenarios so that the best design solution is
discovered. We differentiate ourselves with our ability to provide comprehensive
golf design, landscape architecture and land planning services to our clients with a
balanced approach that ensures value is spread evenly throughout a project. We begin
with exhaustive analysis and move into creating several iterations for potential design
solutions. We work collaboratively with our clients and consultants to reach ideal
decisions. Our three-dimensional representations help our clients visualize outcomes.

Downhill 95 feet
Dog-leg right
Green approach from the center

The finishing hole at River Rock is a stern

and final test. For the best angle of ap-
proach to the green, the 467-yard, dog-
leg left demands a long, accurate tee-shot
placed as closely as possible to the fairway
bunker on the right. Because the hole
plays over 90 feet downhill, it will not play
nearly as long as the measured yardage,
offering birdie opportunities for strategic
thinking and well-executed shots. The
putting surface at eighteen is divided by a
“biarritz” that separates the green into two
distinct pinnable areas, one in the front
and the other in the back. Because of this
divide, the approach shot must be placed
on the proper side to avoid a putt through
a difficult valley in the green. A native
mountain stream runs the entire length
along the right side of the hole, peaking
in and out from the forest, providing a
signature element to the course.

DETAILS
In our combined 40-plus years in the golf design industry, we have created lasting
relationships with prominent people in the golf business including several signature-
name golf course designers and PGA professionals. We have collaborated with Phil
Mickelson, Hale Irwin, Tom Fazio and Tom Lehman. When the viability of a golf
project depends on the name of a well-known golfer associated with its design, we are
eager collaborators. In the following pages we have listed some of the award recognition
our projects received and our comprehensive golf project list.
