Researched it a bit and found that the word itself is a polite form of the word "to be". That doesn't explain why they use it, but that's all I found.

sugoi - awesome
tamaya - the fireworks thing
hontou - really

No idea bout gozaru tbh... People say that it doesn't really mean anything, but imo that just makes it weird that they say it at all.
