“I Will Ref lect” is a national melanoma skin care initiative that The Spa at Charleston Place

Julie Parrish
woman

Sister of June Wallace; Director of Finance & Administration at MUSC

June Wallace’s fair skin and red hair required that she protect herself when going out in the sun, so she

stayed in the shade and wore her sunscreen. As a nurse at Roper and an active, single mother of a
busy

5-year-old son, the eraser-size spot on her inner leg bothered her. The spot had no sun exposure and her
betty’s

dermatologist wasn’t concerned, but because it irritated her, she insisted on removing it, and, routinely,
the little black book for every

had it sent for testing. Two weeks later, the 31 year old discovered that she had Stage 3 Melanoma.

After aggressive surgery, June was cancer-free, but six years later, just before her 38th birthday in December 2003, she felt a lump in the
same general area. A biopsy revealed that the cancer had returned and had spread to her liver, lungs, spleen, spine and throat. In May
2004, June lost her courageous battle.

June’s sister, Julie Parrish dutifully educates friends and strangers alike about skin cancer prevention and education. The mission is a
family matter, to honor June and because of the hereditary component of the disease. Early detection in June’s mother and father led to
successful treatment of melanoma. Julie, who’s chances of developing skin cancer increased by 50% when her sister was diagnosed, sees
her dermatologist annually and had digital mole mapping done to account for every spot and freckle from head to toe. “You have to take
control of your own health and your own destiny,” says Julie, “it is so important to be conscious and proactive.”

Dana C. Mitchell
Real Estate Management; Improv Comedian; Survivor

A routine doctors appointment in December 2005 was the perfect opportunity to ask the doctor about
the bump that had appeared on 26-year-old Dana Mitchell’s hip. The doctor removed and tested it, and
everything was fine, so in February, when another bump appeared on his right knee, he wasn’t worried. At
a follow up appointment in March, he showed the doctor the bump but was assured that it was probably the
same thing and was counseled to see a dermatologist if it changed in appearance. “I had sold myself on the
thought that ‘it was fine,’” explains Dana, “and in doing so, had lost a bit of focus on terms of watching it.”

By early-June, in the late evening, the spot would start to hurt, and occasionally it would bleed if lightly scratched, but never once did Dana
consider that it might be dangerous. While on vacation in California in July, a friend asked about it and recommended he get it taken off
soon. So, when he returned home, he made an appointment to see a dermatologist for purely cosmetic reasons. The removal took 5
minutes, while the results changed his life: it was melanoma, it was deep and it was serious.

Together with a very supportive family, Dana made a plan of action. The following morning he had a wide biopsy and a lymph node
dissection. “Three days later, with my entire extended family gathered in Greenville and going crazy with worry, we got the call letting
us know that it was really bad,” Dana explains. The cancer was found in 3 of 4 lymph nodes and he was diagnosed at Stage 3b. “Amid
everyone freaking out – I was scared, but I was really calm,” explains Dana. “It sounds cliché and is hard to explain but I felt a sense of
comfort and peace and felt so lucky to be surrounded by people who loved me. I wasn’t afraid.”

Dana was given a 50/50 chance of survival, and after the removal of the remaining lymph nodes on his right side, began a 12-month
course of the relatively new Interferon Alpha treatment, an immunotherapy drug that increased his odds by 5 – 10%. Almost 4 years
later, Dana is happily living cancer-free. He gets PET scans twice a year and annual check ups with a dermatologist to compare his skin
to a digital mole map he had done. Dana gives a lot of credit to support, access to health care, and faith and optimism in carrying him
through this experience. He implores others to pay attention to any new spots on your skin or spots that have changed in appearance and
to not hesitate in making an appointment with a dermatologist. “Sometimes it takes just 30 minutes of your life to save it.”

betty buzz: Fruit & Veggie Garden Calendar

Jim Martin, Charleston Parks Conservancy’s Executive Director and a lifelong
gardener who has worked for over 20-years in public horticulture, is known as the
“garden guru” by other landscape and garden professionals. He’s shared his expertise on
some key calendar items to note to help keep every busy woman’s thumb green.
April
• Plant tomatoes now that the last spring frost date is past.
• Plant cantaloupe, cucumber, squash and watermelons. Here in the south,
it works best to plant them on mounds for optimum drainage.
• Plant basil and other herbs that will enjoy the approaching warm weather.
They need 5 - 6 hours of direct sunlight to prosper.
• Mix full sun annuals such as zinnias and marigolds for a pop of color in the vegetable garden.
• A fresh 2-inch straw mulching under strawberries keeps them clean and ready to pick when ripe and juicy.

May
• Plant peppers now, because they love the heat. There are many to choose from ranging in
size of fruit, and the heat they provide when used in the kitchen.
• Put a layer of newspapers between rows and plants and finish it off with a 2-inch layer
of straw or leaves. It will help keep weeds out, moisture in and cools the
roots during hot summer days.
• Start a compost pile with the garden weeds, kitchen waste and left over
cool season vegetables that have passed their prime.
• Add mushroom compost to all vegetable areas before planting more warm
season plants such as sweet corn and okra.

June
• Keep picking herbs to use for cooking and floral arrangements,
thus forcing new growth and keeping the plants in an active growth cycle.
• Rabbit eye blueberries and fig are starting to ripen. Protect the fruit from
birds with fine netting made specifically for keeping them out.
• Walk the garden every evening and look for potential pest and disease problems.
Catch them in the early stages and minimize the damage.
• Keep the vegetable garden watered during dry periods to ensure tomatoes ripen
properly without the splitting problems that occur with uneven watering.

Bring out the wave because curls are big this Spring. Hair goddess Joanna Katz at
Katz Hair Studio shares her recipe for getting the look!
1) Mix 2-drops of essential, lavender oil and 16-oz of water in a spray bottle.

2) Spray on your hair while scrunching, then set in some plastic, jaw clips and let dry naturally.

3) Finger comb your locks and scrunch in some hair spray for a light hold.

This works best the day after you’ve shampooed.

Joanna also recommends taking your high lights down a bit to a

more golden tone, giving those curls depth and dimension
while enhancing your eyes and skin tone.

betty buzz: Yard & Landscape Calendar
Jim Martin, Charleston Parks Conservancy’s Executive Director and a lifelong
gardener who has worked for over 20-years in public horticulture, is known as the
“garden guru” by other landscape and garden professionals. He’s shared his expertise
on some key calendar items to note to help keep every busy woman’s thumb green.
April
• If it’s flowered, prune it. Forsythia, quince, flowering almond and azaleas can be
cut back, but don’t delay. Azaleas start to form flowers in late June for next
year’s floral display and need time to grow some before then.
• Easter lilies and Christmas amaryllis make fine additions to the garden
when the flowers fade. They will flower in the ground at least 3 - 4
weeks later, and will be a welcome arrival even if they miss the holidays!
• Fertilize roses with a slow release fertilizer or choose an organic formulation
that will provide nutrients throughout the growing season.
• Move your shade-loving tropicals such as bromeliads and orchids outdoors; they’ll enjoy the warm, humid spring days.

May
• With the weather warming up, apply 3 inches of mulch around shrubs, trees and mixed color plantings to help
keep weeds from germinating, cool the soil and help conserve moisture.
• Rake and discard all old flower blooms of camellias and any old leaves that dropped as new ones grow on the plant.
These carry diseases that can re-infect the plants down the road.
• Add 2 - 4 inches of mushroom compost to sun-loving tropicals such as elephant ears, cannas and pineapple lilies.
• Cut out the yellowing foliage of spring flowering bulbs. They no longer are making energy for next year’s floral display.

June
• Look closely for potential pest problems. Handpick pests - a natural, healthy way to take care of pest problems.
• Fertilize citrus with a slow release or ask your favorite nursery what special fertilizer they have specifically for fruit trees.
• Experiment with drought tolerant succulents. This is the month where there will be lots of treasures to pick and choose
from in the big box stores. Have fun and try some new container combinations.
• The big rose bloom is finished and it’s time to deadhead China, Tea and Noisette roses. Add 2 - 4 inches of compost as
they begin to grow new foliage before the next bloom cycle.
• It isn’t too late to plant containerized plants in the garden. The secret is keeping them watered so they can get
established during our hot summer days ahead.

betty buzz: Favorite Travel Tips

Buy airline tickets on Wednesday nights as close to midnight as possible when the airlines are releasing
their held tickets and trying to fill flights. Never purchase on a weekend!

Use an organizational application like Evernote to store your tickets, reservations, directions to and from
the hotel, rental car receipts and other needed items you’ve booked online so that you can access them
on the fly from your PDA.

Make dinner reservations through your hotel concierge whenever possible. Restaurants often give the
best tables and the best service to these guests to maintain a good rapport with the hotel.

When on the road with the family, give your child a map. Circle your starting point and where you will
end up. Let your child play “navigator” and tell you what city or town you will pass next. Find fun facts
or makeup stories about each place you pass.

Travel frequently? Keep a bag packed with travel size toiletries. Hair products (ask for them at your
salon); Hand wipes; Toothbrush, tooth paste and dental floss; Hair ties and a brush; etc.
